    One very good thing is that you always seem to keep up your very high spirits. Or is there perhaps another thing off camera?
    I remember my first crossing back in 1990. 30 feet boat, 30 day crossing, I celebrated my 30:th birthday at sea. No sat nav, no weather reports. No modern stuff.
    The boat was very very good though. One thing, the exhaust was leaking. Not nice to take on saltwater when you don’t know were it’s coming from. Found it after a long searching and fixed it. We didn’t see a single boat on the entire crossing. Only two whales, one was swimming right under the boat and was a lot bigger than the boat. The other followed us just behind the stern for hours, this was on christmas day. Santa maybe?

    I just love the constant laughing in the face of adversity. Kiara falls off a chair & hurts herself & laughs about it on the floor & telling the story and Adam relates to sail problems with no charts with a huge smile on his face. I think you guys got spoiled when you crossed from west to east without any problems. I hope for you that after Verde, all will go smoothly.

    Great that you are wearing your safety gear. At one point in the film you film your turnbuckles, it appears that there is no pins to secure them. Hope you have pins. How do you meassure the tension in your stays? Do you use a tension measurement tool, like spinlock ? Khiara is a super boat fixing master - she can for sure fix the furler with a banana, sunlotion and umbrella.

    Shew - bummer on the Profurl - our Profurl died after crossing the Indian Ocean - Perth to Durban. They told me not to use a winch on it to get it in... guess what I did -whe na squall is coming and you over powered you get it in...so I know how you feel. John Kretschmer on a webinar said beef up your furler - like your anchor ... funny that all the riggers I have met asked why would you want to do that - they have not sailed an ocean - thats why. Good luck with the furler..

    Another awesome job folks!! I’m particularly enjoying this crossing, only because I missed doing this leg with my group in January. I went from Mallorca to the Canary Islands but hopped off there. Then I watched as they struggled their way across the Atlantic, with similar bad luck. Lost their engine, and had squall after squall for days. Then had their main-sail halyard jam, so someone had to go up the mast, twice. Then lost their chart-plotter and auto-pilot, so they had about 5-days rationing water and food, and sailing with their compass. Man, I wish I would have been on that leg - serious ;-) cheers!

    By now you will have figured out it was nothing you did, the bottom bearing on your furler simply fell to bits. And the extra rope wrap/s under the furler was a consequence not a cause. It’s what they do after 10 or 20 years. All of them, not just Profurl. But the good news is you can replace the bearing without replacing the whole furler, like I did the first time it happened, and contrary to everything every furler manufacturer says. A reasonably handy fitter or mechanic can do it for you. And the bearings are remarkably common.

    My mates and I have a rule, problems can snowball that's fine but when we have 3 totally unrelated and unexpected problems even if we are able to overcome each one individually we bin what ever we are doing and head for safety. Before we put this rule in place or when the rule was just a joke that we didn't take seriously the day always ended in a hospital. Call it superstition, coincidence, guardian angel, what ever it is we don't mess with it any more. Its a more reliable indicator that things are about to go sideways than we like to admit but we all agree that when the world speaks to you its best to listen.

  • @flyinggybe2113
    @flyinggybe2113 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Older Profurls are known to have bearing problems. Hope you get it sorted without too much delay and grief. Sailing deep downwind angles wing-on-wing with a following sea tends to be quite rolly, particularly with double ended boats without much form stability aft. To understand why, ever tried to stand mid point in a canoe with the bow resting on a river bank and the stern in the water? That's analogous to what the wave trap is doing to the hull. But fortunately there are things that help. When running deep, try a sail setup with about 2/3 of your total sail area with the mainsail to leeward and about 1/3 total sail area poled out to windward. For most boats this will be much less rolly than equal sail area on both sides. Twisted open leaches when running wing-on-wing also contributes to rolling. So, vang down the mainsail to close off leach twist and lower the outboard pole tip to close off jib/genoa leach twist. Note that rigging to pole bridles to the pole tip will reduce the risk of breaking the pole since it avoids adding bending moment mid point on the pole. Hope the rest of the crossing goes smoothly!

    @akathesquid5794 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Didn't read comments but I'm guessing someone probably already has suggested simple bearing failure. Once the bearing collapses it gets ugly in there, but the fix is easy back at shore. Bearing kits are available from Wichard with new bearings, circlips and seals. Needs to be done every 10 years with the NC/LC 42 and 32 furlers. Otherwise profurl units are dependable and robust. I have 2 on my cutter. Sorry this happened out there. You didn't do this, the wrap happened because the drum raised by the width of the bearing that disintegrated. The seals probably failed a while back and the poor bearing has been suffering seawater and washed away lube. Wait until you feel how easy these furl when the bearings function!

    • @sylvielauzon836
      @sylvielauzon836 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exact same thing happened to us. We also taught at the beginning that is was because of the wraps under the drum but finally realized that the breaking of the bearings was the cause of all this. Sailing on a cutter rig was not so dramatic, it ended just going slower for the crossing.

    I knew the original boat that Tayana was conceived from. Can't remember her name now - I believe it began with the letter K. She was wooden, in Shilshole Marina in Seattle, grey hull - lovely. She was for sale 2 years ago at the Port Townsend Wooden Boat show. Don't know where she is now - but great history which you probably know. Love your videos and the interactions with other TH-cam sailors. Lived aboard in Seattle on an Alden 33 - wooden boat sailor and fan. Raced T-Birds, and had a wooden Vashon Island Cutter (Bill Garden) in Sausilato.
