    Can see your Yachtmaster instructor sucking his teeth at your lack of charts Adam... tut tut... :-) ! Well done sorting it out with the Open CPN. Good reminder to always have a decent back up plan, that actually is a plan, thank you for your honesty and generosity in letting me learn from your mistakes! Was wondering if there was going to be a plop when some O ring or something dropped of the bottom as you removed the furling mechanism! Great repair, nice that you got to see a bit of Cape Verde! Hope the rest of the crossing goes well (This is all meant in good humour just incase it doesn't come across!)

    To fix a major problem in an area with few marine resources is flying with Neptune at your side.
    Great story.

    Huge circlips are used in aircraft landing gear. To install or remove them, cut a patch of steel from a soup can. Wrap it into a U, or around your circlip. Grab the sides with a vice grips and pull it or tap it with a wooden mallet where you want your circlip to go. Done. I think you had the option of converting your rolling gib sail to a hanking sail. Lighter.

    .... laughing ... the shop guy, did you see any familiar faces every time you passed through his door .. how many customers was he telling to come back in an hour .. Adam, I thought you were going to elaborate on Khiara's 18 month circumnavigation comment for the newbies here .. I had missed the mention of Norway previously, that's exciting ... you have mentioned on a couple of occasions that this is the first lap, so Mindelo may have to be explored on a future lap .... bang up job on the furler .. snap ring spreaders, hardly ever use them but when you need them and have them, they are a godsend for sure .... thx for the share Adam & Khiara .. as always .. never stop dreaming, just dream bigger .. have fun be safe, save our oceans ....

    Me again😅 Useful Stuff that is brilliant value - Big Aerosol Cans of Motorbike Drive Chain Grease. You can even get a Clear Grease one. It is water resistant plus is chain Seal Safe and with the tube that plugs into the nozzle, you can control where you need the Grease to go, and as it doesn't have that expensive "Marine" word attached to it, it can be had for as low as a fiver a tin. Useful for Winches and other things onboard too. You're Welcome. Bob. 👍⛵️✨️✨️✨️

    Awesome episode and smooth repair . I am amazed by 2 things :
    1) how well the spin halyard took off the pressure of your massive rig to allow for the repair
    2) how on earth Khiara’s hair washing is harder than this repair 🤣😂🤣

  • @wizardgmb
    @wizardgmb 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    "...including washing my hair." 😂
    It's amazing the level of repairs that can be accomplished in a place with limited resources. As long as one isn't afflicted by OCD and can think at least somewhat outside the box, most small repairs and some not so small ones are possible!
    Keep up the great videos and above all STAY SAFE! ⛵❤️😁

    I watch a couple dozen sailing channels. What I like best are the ones that show how resourceful they can be. Good on you, Adam!
    Khiara! You are definitely one of the best-looking young ladies on these sailboats. I love your smile and your infectious laughter!
    Practicality! I traveled on land in various places in Africa many years ago with a few young ladies. HAIR! Yeah, I like longer hair on ladies, but there comes a point where it is just not practical. Of the ladies I traveled with, the short bob haircut ones had a much easier time of it!
    Just a thought! Love your adventures. Looking forward to more of them. Thank you. Fair winds and following seas!

    They don't put a grease fitting in them

    Like the line winches need service every year they should be taken apart cleaned inspected greased
    An reasonable

  • @jpdj2715
    @jpdj2715 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great job. One takeaway maybe: get pliers to remove/place circlips - one for inner and one for outer. With a file you could create the inner one maybe from a pointed nose pliers (but probably have to file for a couple days). For the outer circlips you need pliers with inverted leverage and in your case that seemed to be the "difficult" ones. Using such special pliers also increases chances that you will be able to reuse the circlip again.

    Just a little note for you, there's no benefit to packing too much grease in a bearing like that, it's not carrying a heavy load and spinning fast, half full is plenty.
    When you have too much it restricts the movement and adds resistance, I know it's not a racing boat but there's no reason to make things any harder than they are.

    • @jonathanwetherell3609
      @jonathanwetherell3609 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Too true!

    • @SailingMillennialFalcon
      @SailingMillennialFalcon  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok, that’s good to know. We certainly weren’t able to fill it all with grease. It has two grease holes (that have been filled in by profurl) so we assumed that they pumped the grease in until it was full. Good to know though

    • @ian-c.01
      @ian-c.01 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@SailingMillennialFalcon Profurl probably filled in those holes and omitted the grease nipples for a reason, maybe they where getting reports that the furler wasn't rotating freely from people who where being over generous with the grease.
      Marine grease is super sticky and great for propshaft bearings that are submerged in seawater but not ideal for hand operated items. A thin coating on those type of roller bearings will prevent corrosion and provide plenty of lubricant. The lip seals should keep the water out.

  • @PhilBaker13
    @PhilBaker13 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

  • @andytaylor97

    I never cease to be amazed by you two !! Legends! Adam, is there any part of the boat you don’t know how to fix? Have you taken everything apart to see how it works just in case or have you got OEM manuals etc to refer to? Whilst I am in awe of you both, it also makes me realise I wouldn’t know where to start with a lot of this stuff… perhaps it is your aeronautical engineering background or just your willingness to give it a go!

    I'm not an expert rigger, but I think you've done exactly the right thing. I recently rebuilt the same unit as my bearing had rusted and seized. My boat has been Sadly neglected on land. It looks like you used SKF bearings which are great. I wouldn't worry about them. The more important part is a double lip seal. If you used them on your rebuild just put the grease nipple in and you should be as good as new. I remember those damn circlips!

    Good work Adam
    The overall design of that furler , with classic automotive grade bearings, was bound to fail in a saltwater environment
    once the lip seal on the oil seals fails, then salt water will get into the bearing and that bearing is gonna rust and fail quickly.
    Some curlers, , Harken in particular, have ‘Torlon,- nylon bearings, they will not rust.
    You might consider buying a entire new set of bearings and seals for the furler, and top swivel.
    Good job!
    PS , met you in the boatyard in St Martin.

      I (another Aussie)had the identical problem to this 150 miles into a 500 mile passage and was assured by a Profurl dealer that it would, first, be ok to continue the journey (it was) and second, necessitate a complete new unit, including foil extrusions. It was only after receiving the complete new furler ($5,600 AUD) and fitting it and was able to examine the old unit, including the lower furler assembly that I was able to make an assessment myself and conclude that a new bearing and seals was actually all that was required, confirmed by a fitter machinist acquaintance. Then I saw Magnus’ video from SV Nutshell, and now this. Recently I ran across the Profurl dealer, with whom I hadn’t raised the issue of his faulty and extremely expensive advice, vowing to simply move on and not use his services again. He had seen I was using a competitor to do some more work on my boat that he could have and demanded to know what was the problem with his work, as if I didn’t have a choice in the matter. He got the full chapter and verse and had to subsequently defend himself in local cruising chat groups after my expose, which cost him several other big jobs, he’d already quoted on. Well done to both Adam & Magnus for your repair jobs.
