      The birds will love it. We are currently looking at putting some more in, mainly to attract more birds into the garden 😄

    Thanks for this instructive video - we've always been a bit hesitant about cutting back our Grevilleas but after watching your video my fears have been allayed.

    Totally agree, with the notion of a hard prune to encourage new growth. Case in point, my father loved these but just let them grow, sadly after his passing, I took to caring for his plants. 2 meter tall leggy thing, cut down to

      Grevilleas respond to pruning really well. Bottle brushes (callistemons) not quite as well. But they can still be pruned reasonably hard - try adding a slow release fertiliser after pruning.
      Happy gardening 🌱🌱

    that bird must think your`re nuts cropping the life out of it , he was feeding on the flower you cut hehehe

      Hahaha, yep, but by pruning there will be so many more flowers for the birds in a few months time 😄

    I live in Southern California (Los Angeles) and planted 7 grevilleas (moonlight, kings celebration, Kings rainbow, spirit of anzac, red hook, 2 long john) in March 2022 and they've doubled-tripled in size already. Once it cools down and heads into fall here (mid October), would it be ok to give a hard prune then? I would rather not wait until spring to clean up the garden if I can do it sooner. Thank you in advance!

    • @iCultivate1
      @iCultivate1  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry about my slow reply. I am not very familiar with your climate, but from what I think it is, I believe that pruning would be ok as asked. Did you end up doing it and how did it go?

    I have 3 grevilleas of the same species, all purchased at the same time about two years ago.
    One (planted in the ground in full sun) flowers profusely throughout the year. And it looks very healthy. Another, planted about 3 meters away (also in the ground but rocky area) only started flowering now and look stunted. Limited number flowers.
    The third one, I have it in a pot in a semi shaded area, only started flowering recently, which seem rather late. I fertilised them once a year during early spring.
    I wonder why two of them are not performing as well as the first.
    Please advise.

      Thank you for your question.
      A couple of things to consider - most grevilleas perform best in full sun and in the ground - while you can grow them in pots with a suitable potting mixture, they do perform best in the ground.
      These are two possible reasons for the difference you are seeing in their growth.
      Hope this helps and happy gardening 🙂

    I enjoy the wild looking Grenillea Bonfire of mine, that I've never pruned. I'd like to simply shape it though, so its not in my walkway path....I just simply don't want to hard prune it to a short shrub, as you have done to yours. I guess January in Northern California, should be a suitable time then?

    • @iCultivate1

      No problem at all pruning at that time, although the regrowth might be a bit slower than seen in the video.
      Did you have a look at the part 2 video? This shows the result from that hard prune: th-cam.com/video/QJ4u-PvYuEg/w-d-xo.html

    I left mine in the plastic pot from the nursery. Last week i finally put in a new pit with fresh soil. It is brown. Getting worse. I will prune it.

    That was areal pruning. Mine has a maize of criss cross branches, thick and twisted and never flowers. She's getting a real pruning, no more tip pruning, just turns it into thatch.

    I just bought a house with huge grevillias. They are this type that you just showed and are up to the 1st floors roof. (so 1/5 strories tall) We want the flowers and height so we can see the birds outside the windows and because they've already got leggy and bare at the bottoms but i'm concerned they may blow right over. Should i cut them right back?

    • @iCultivate1
      @iCultivate1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A good question. If they are the same type, you will find that they will benefit from a good prune. But, this will mean that they will be lower than your windows.
      I think that in time, you will find they will get more and more leggy, if not pruned. They may even break in strong winds.
      My advice would be to give them a good prune - give it a while and you will be enjoying them again, and for longer.
      Hope that helps.

      Sorry I missed your follow up reply. You need to remember that a lot of the new growth will emerge from just below the cut.
      Therefore, when trimming, you need to imagine what the new growth will make it look like.
      Hard to judge without actually seeing it, but I would imagine you would need to trim a bit lower so that by the time it has grown back to near the window level it doesn’t look strange.
      Hope that helps.

    Great tips mate! What about the smaller ground cover gravilleas? Do they need pruning as the spread out? Cheers

    • @iCultivate1
      @iCultivate1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry about the late reply. Good question! The ground cover grevilleas do still benefit from an occasional prune, but usually you don't need to worry about it as often.
