    “You are wrong. If there is anything I have learned in my travels across the Planes, it is
    that many things may change the nature of a man. Whether regret, or love, or revenge or fear - whatever you believe can change the nature of a man, can. I've seen belief move cities, make men stave off death, and turn an evil hag's heart half-circle. This entire Fortress has been constructed from belief. Belief damned a woman, whose heart clung to the hope that another loved her when he did not. Once, it made a man seek immortality and achieve it. And it has made a posturing spirit think it is something more than a part of me.”

    "The sphere wrinkles in your hands, the skin of the sphere peeling away into tears and turning into a rain of bronze that encircles you. Each droplet, each fragment that enters you, you feel a new memory stirring, a lost love, a forgotten pain, an ache of loss - and with it, comes the great pressure of regret, regret of careless actions, the regret of suffering, regret of war, regret of death, and you feel your mind begin buckling from the pressure - so MUCH, all at once, so much damage done to others... so much so an entire FORTRESS may be built from such pain."

      It's, ah... not regret. Or rather, it may be your personal answer, but regret itself is not what the game was going for. Regret is only a part of the answer.
      Getting the right answer can be tricky. You see, this game is kind of in love with the Wisdom stat. In many (many) situations you'll need a high Wis score to get a shot at the whole story. Naturally, the endgame is no different. You need The Nameless one to have at least 24 Wis to get the right answer as a conversation option in the final confrontation. It's probably the most quoted bit from the game, actually.
      It actually makes sense in-universe: TNO needs beyond-godly perspective in order to fully understand the implications of (and beyond) his own predicament. Something that even the Original Incarnation lacked. If he hadn't, he sure as shit wouldn't have made the deal with Ravel in the first place, and so much misery would have been averted.

    • @brianu2229
      @brianu2229 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +0Advocat0 Having played through the game again and given it some thought, my own personal interpretation is, like you said, regret isn't *the* answer. Ravel says as much, that it can be a different answer for different people and still be valid (since the ultimate answer, really, is belief). Bear in mind though, when you first open the way to the Fortress of Regrets TNO hasn't made his realization that belief is the key. It is his overpowering feeling of regret that opens the way to the final act, to an enormous monument to the pain he's caused.
      What I think the game was going for is that regret is the canon choice, the one that most resonates with both the theme of the game and TNO's quest. The word comes up again and again from people all over the game, from Trias to a harlot to the Bronze Sphere.

    And at the end you discover that the true Nameless One's name is... Rob Zombie.
    Just kidding.
    But still, I thought I never cried as much as I had when I finally opened the Bronze Sphere, and felt the friendly hand of the First One in your shoulder, as a long and distant friend finally meeting you... That until all my friends were revived and the last farewells were said. The friendships, the love, the overall loyalty... This game changed my perception. And at last, but not least, I was happy to just tell Deionarra the truth. I wasn't in love with her, but love didn't changed her nature, the truth did. In my ending, I think I "saved" everyone, and Deionarra was no longer trapped in torment waiting for me, be it in the Death's Halls or at her heart. I only regret not being able to save Ignus, that poor soul. In the end, Ravel was right...
    The GUILT changed Morte's nature.
    The LOVE changed Annah's nature. (also Ravel's)
    The BURDEN and FAITH changed Dak'kon's nature.
    The POWER and DEATH changed Ignus' nature.
    The CHOICE changed Fall-From-Grace's nature.
    The QUESTIONING/REBELLION changed Nordom's nature.
    The ORDER and VENGEANCE changed Vhailor's nature.
    The REJECTION changed Tria's nature.
    The ILLUSION of LOVE changed Deionarra's nature.
    But, for me... TORMENT/SUFFERING changed TNO's/TTO's nature.

    • @Mazryonh
      @Mazryonh 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      You can save Ignus if you play an Evil character. That way you'll face Vhailor instead of Ignus in the Fortress, and once you resurrect Ignus the restored Nameless One will grant Ignus' ultimate wish.

    "If there is anything I have learned in my travels across the Planes, it is that many things may change the nature of a man. Whether regret, or love, or revenge or fear - whatever you believe can change the nature of a man, can."
    The above is one of my favourite gaming quotes of all time. Perfectly encapsulating the ideal answer to the over-arcing question and possibly the best way to end the encounter with the Transcendent One. Regardless of the answer, whatever one believes may change the nature of a man will be their answer. For me, I guess it is belief that may change the nature of a man.

      This game can change the nature of a man.

    • @Zaxares
      @Zaxares 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pondering that answer also led me to another revelation. If you ask the Transcendent One the same question, his response is that nothing can change the nature of a man. If we accept the answer that whatever you believe in strongly enough can change one's nature, the TTO's answer is also true. Which brings me to my second revelation; all of those answers are true, but they can only apply to one person; yourself. YOU are the only person with the power to change your own nature. The reasons can vary, but the ability and choice to do so lies in your hands alone, and that can actually be a very empowering realization.

The bass/choral voices/horns/strings together made the Fortress of Regrets feel truly desolate. One of the best moments in the game, IMO. (The Deionarra sensory stone, where you find out just how twisted & evil you are/were, is another - that really blindsided me.) The whole Deionarra story line was just so well done. I've never felt such compassion/pity for a clump of pixels before.

    If the story would be voice-acted and the conversations animated, the script would need reworking as well. The script was written under novel-like conditions, but for a more graphic remake it would have to be revised to be more movie-like to avoid feeling stiff and convoluted. They also ramp the power level up more quickly. Take the C&C series for instance. The original C&C had fifteen or so levels for each side, but you only started getting the big, splashy kit around level 10. Whereas C&C: Red Alert 3 has twice the units, 50% more factions, but fewer levels per side... wtf?

    @PRINCEJONEZY Then I'll add this - Boll + same scriptwriter from Legend of Chun-Li, who happens to be working on the script for Shadow of Colossus.
    Clearly, Hollywood hates us, gamers, and seeks to actively to punish us whenever they can...

    I, for one, would settle for a higher resolution port of this game to the Baldurs Gate 2 engine. That's about the only shortcoming of Planescape - it's engine was rather clunky and buggy.
    All the rest is golden and should not be touched - except maybe adding even more of those excellent voice actors in some key events, like the last meeting with the TO.

    You can get it working with a bunch of mods installed. Like the widescreen mod.. But the way this game is designed when you're running it at high resolution everything is so small that you can barely even play then.. It needs to be ported and emulated to run properly in a directx 11 windows 7 environement... The engine this game runs on (Baldur's Gate) has some serious problems with directx 10 and 11...

    30$ for one of the best modern RPGs isn't much!
    Witcher 2 didn't get dumbed down, it actually got more complex and diverse. The combat isn't really QTE, but a proper action game. Witcher 2 is so much better than Witcher 1, and while I still love Witcher 1, it hasn't aged well let me tell you that much. Lots of filler in that game, while Witcher 2 is pretty much all good content.
    Choices mean a LOT more. At the end of an act, the choice you make sends you into one of two wholly different zones

    That and WotC seem to have given up on Planescape. Besides changing the entire cosmology to be incompatible (relatively speaking, you would have to rework a lot of shit to get 4th Edition to work with the main themes of Planescape), the only thing related to Sigil is a section in the Dungeon Master Manuel.
    Thanks for nothing WoTC, hope you go out of business!
