    A tip for Lizzy. Your welds are looking very sound and uniform. The settings are perfect by the sound. One thing I would suggest is to speed up your travel and put a quick whip or back puddle (1/8"-3/16") to it. This will downsize your fillet to bring them closer to spec (1/2 the thickness of the smallest thickness material you're welding) The increase in speed will make your welds arrow straight and give them that machined look. This isn't intended to be negative at all because I think you have natural skills in your application.

    • @jeremyspecce
      @jeremyspecce 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Can you explain that “1/2 the thickness of your thinnest material” thing a little? I assume maybe this is only for structural welding? Any kind of sheet metal you tend to be thicker than the base material from maybe 10 gauge and thinner I imagine.

    • @russeli1941
      @russeli1941 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jeremyspecce You are absolutely right about that, Jeremy. Most of what I ever welded was heavy structural fabrications so that's one of those rules of thumb that stuck with me. Nonetheless, it is beneficial to at least have that in mind with whatever you're welding. The travel speed on this application should be increased. 1/8" plate doesn't require a 1/4 - 3/8 fillet weld.

    Get a good air dryer for the plasma, that will fix that issue. Don't care how dry the outside air is, it's wet once compressed and cooled. Water causes the air to be more conductive, and eats the tips out. If you are close to the power limit of the tip, it will blow them out instantly. You can tell when the air dryer needs to be replaced on a cnc by how long the tip lasts!
    I recommend a good desiccant dryer dedicated for the plasma, just make sure to install a valve on the inlet. Otherwise when you disconnect it the desiccant will be exposed to room air. Get silica gel based one, and you can buy the silica beads in bulk and reuse them. You just bake them at 250F for 30 min, and they are as good as new!

    Matt if you ever want a spray to use on something where it will never rust in your lifetime consider using a product called Glyptol. It was invented by GE to coat the inside of large electric motors. The NASCAR boys now use it inside differentials and also inside the blocks of racing engines. • @ADBBuild

    I have never been disappointed with the pace of the wrecker, it’s just one of those things in your line of work. I enjoy watching everything you get involved with. Its at about the same speed as Paul and Bens wrecker. You have so much to do along with running a business that there is always more work than time in a day to do it. You keep it all going Matt by prioritizing the jobs that need doing in order of importance and end up with a mad dash rush at the end to get ready for whatever it is comes your way. It’s the same with Fab Rats, Rory and crew, Chad and I am sure many others. The thing I like is that you never seem to let these things faze you. You just take it all in your stride and keep going. Your suck it and see style of fabrication might give some people cause for concern but for me, I just think of all the amazing things you have done, your vehicles are outstanding and that’s all down to having a blue print (ish) inside your head and a card cad program in your shop, if it works, why try and fix it? Kudos to you all, I do miss Rudy not being around and will miss Trevor and Skeeter, Trevor was always blamed for everything by shouting Treeeeeevor, I will miss those guys and wish them all the very best in what they are doing. I have always liked Tom; he is a good addition to your team and somehow you always manage to have a friendly capable team around you Matt that the show will go on. Stay safe all of you and I look forward to the next one.

    Matt et al: So much depends upon who designs, stages and judges the individual competition events for the Olympics. (I do have credentialed experience in the 2002 SLC Olympics) It needs to be an impartial 3rd party. I suggest Colt and Matt from Bleepin' Jeep as a beginning. I have others that I would like to suggest, but we will start at the "Very Beginning" It is a very good place to start, . . . .

    well I agree you don't necessarily have to be the safest person in the shop the one thing I will say is always wear safety glasses. you can cut yourself or even lose a finger and Carry On Through Life perfectly fine but if you lose an eye it's devastating. my mom lost her eye in a freak accident when she was young and I almost lost my eye few years ago working in the shop. it can happen to anybody. now that you have air conditioning being installed you should really consider wearing safety glasses more often.

    Good to see the progress being made on the WLOR Wrecker. Lizzy continuing to do an awesome job welding, Tom Tom also showing his expertise in welding and completing the firewall, making it look real pretty. I am confident by the time Matt gets done with this project that it will be an awesome looking wrecker, not just a bunch of parts thrown together to be functional like some wreckers are, but something that is appealing to the eyes. That new bumper on Blue Steel looks beefy. Looking forward to getting the transmission in so the rest of the wreck can take place. Great footage of the work being done.

    Plasma cutter- a few issues, you are probably using compressed air. Do you have a water trap in the system, water in the air will ruin your tips.
    Second, is it a contact torch or non-contact? We were using a Miller Spectrum something, having problems until we found it was a non-contact torch. We were dragging the torch on the metal, ruining the consumables. If that's the case, there is a guide you can buy that holds the tip 1/8 inch or so above the metal, if you can't keep that distance while holding the torch with your hands. I've also found that the hood has to be tightened properly, not too tight, not too loose.
    Keep up the videos, I' have learned where NOT to take my 4WD Suburban, just because it's 4WD, doesn't mean you can go everywhere. I wish it had a winch, but don't know where I would put it, I'll just stay out of trouble.

    I've got that plasma cutter.... it looks like those plunge cuts, without a gouge tip, are diverting your arc on that thick metal. There's a manual somewhere that says start the arc at the edge of your work. Instead of having the torch perpendicular to the work, and going straight down... start with the torch at a big angle, then roll your hand up to perpendicular after the arc is lit. Good Luck Matt.
