When I was a kid in Michigan, we had a Goldfish in a bowl on the dinning room table. We left for 3 days in the winter and came back the find the Goldfish Bowl was frozen solid. Once the house was warmed up and the ice had melted, the Goldfish was back swimming around and lived several yrs longer.
My now massive Goldfish of 14 year-old is on his 4th Tank as it is massive being in a good big tank,then just 2 days ago bought a new Filter + Tank even bigger also with an assortment of real planters now ''now is one very happy massive fish'' ...Great Video 10/10 ...Thanks

I would caution to use a lid when possible. My aunt who I lived with has a 55 gallon tank and her 8 inch goldfish jumped out before she repaired the lid. Thankfully we heard the splash and found him behind the tank before damage was done
that depends on the fish itself, as she had said from her experience none of her fish have tried to leap out of the tank, I have a comet goldfish, and he hasn't jumped out before, but my friend has a fantail and a comet who both have.
I suggest if you would like to go lid free do not fill the tank to the brim. I keep my tank a half inch below the rim. my friend mentioned earlier drained her tank by about an inch and the fish stopped jumping out.

My fish have never jumped out of my tank. Fish on jump when their water is really toxic so they jump out of the water in attempt to save them selves
Hey, I wanna a goldfish in the future and have a few questions. Is a clear tub better than a solid color one? Also, if I have hang on back filters is it possible to cut holes in the plastic? I have a cat and some dogs and would like to ensure my fishes safety with a lid!
Miss E’s Animals - either colour is fine, but coloured would stop the fish from being spooked often by pets and people, and you can cut into the plastic

They're really great pets, super low maintenence (no walking, no training, etc) and its amazing to watch them grow. They're very cute, I'd reccomend them.

Goldfish eat A Lot. and go to the bathroom A Lot. Everything you feed will remain in the tank as rotting food or rotting waste. You must be able to handle all of this. I don't think this is low maintenance bruh😅
You have been EXTREMELY helpful, educational, and motivational. I have had larger tropical tanks all my life (Cichlids to Snakeheads), now it is time to go back to my youth and raise goldfish again. The right way this time, your way, they were starter fish back in my day.

9 months ago I began my adventures in this hobby. I watched a lot of the content you put up and am truely greatful. Sadly I have commons and not getting a lid was very bad. After my younger of two tankmates jumped out I will definitely advise that lids ARE important.

i remember this was the first video i watched after getting my comet goldfish at a fair. he was rough at the beginning, he was really bloated and was floating horizontally. since adding mela fix and aquarium salt, he's been amazing for almost 6 months! he's thriving in his 10 gallon tank. however, hes going to be upgraded to a 20 in less than a month since he's getting bigger. he love his airstone, duckweed, and moss balls!

I would recommend to use a lid for any common goldfish tank. I've had many common goldfish try to jump out of their tanks.

The misinformation in the comment section here is unbelievable. The fish per gallon rules are general rules of thumb, but actual recommended stocking density is based on many different variables and actually can be calculated using formulas based on fish rearing industry standards... These seem to be completely unknown to the home aquarium industry. Variables include "inflow" (which is hard to determine in a home aquarium setting due to the fact there is not usually a constant flow of water, but rather water changes), amount of feed given to fish, (digestion of food not only requires an increase in oxygen consumption due to increase in metabolic rate but also and increase in waste) and temperature as oxygen saturation decreases with increases in temperature. these are just a few of the variables taken into consideration.
Also, to those who believe that over-filtration is some sort of remedy for not doing water changes... it is not. Yes it helps with elevated levels of ammonia and nitrite, converting them to the much less toxic nitrate, however no amount of filtration will remove nitrate. There is a point where adding more filtration will have no effect.
Lastly, to those saying "my fish have been living like this for multiple years and they are fine" Yes, your fish may seem fine as fish have a "resistance phase" when dealing with stress (poor water quality, low O2 etc) And may have become more resistant to those stresses but they are far from "healthy." Growth will be stunted, lifespan shortened along with many other symptoms. A healthy goldfish can live 20+ years. If you knew someone who only lived to their early thirties and was small, frail and far less energetic would you say they were healthy because they managed to live at least that long and didn't die right away? NO. Fish display poor health in ways that aren't as obvious to us. don't assume.

chris dwyer Great post. Though I wouldn't trust those formulas with fancy goldfish given the risk that even minor stunting can have on these already deformed fish.
Iknow789 valid point, however I feel that stocking density formulas could be modified to fit for fancy goldfish, they could be based on those for standard goldfish or any cyprinidae for that matter and altered to provide the best rearing conditions for fancy goldfish under \certain parameters.
Well I know the rule 1cm per liter and always take the biggest fish out of all twice because of the room the gravel and decorations take
chris dwyer ok so you seem very good in goldfish keeping and I really need your help, this is my first ever fish tank, I have a 20 gallon with 3 baby fancy goldfish and 4 snails (small snails)
I have two filters in the tank (a 20 gal and a 10 gal) which creates a lot of oxygen bubbles, I also have 4 plants in the tank
My fish recently have been swimming at tilted angles, going to surface for air, and opening and closing their mouths rapidly, one of them also has red spots on their back and on their fin so I added stress relievent (which said it would heal damaged fins ect) but they seem to still be struggling please help me
They have also recently started to loose appetite (I’ve found left over food on the bottom of the tank a lot)

Solid Gold Aquatics Hey Jenny! I have a question. I am thinking of purchasing a 1.5 inch calico fantail goldfish from a breeder near me. I am planning on doing this towards the end of the summer, because I want to get all of my research down, and I want to make sure I know everything about the fish before I purchase it so he/she can live a healthy life. I have already started reading many websites and books for tank sizes, and they say 10 gallons is fine. Even though I am planning on only having *one* small goldfish, I should probably keep in mind he will grow (I still have to figure out how much calico fantails grow if they do at all). So i am a little skeptical about what I read about only 10 gallons, so I was wondering if I could have your opinion: *What is the best sized tank for a 1.5 inch calico fantail??* Thank you so much!

sorry I am not Jennie, but i can say from experience that fantails grow to at least 6 inches by the time they are 2 years old.
I get that the fish will only be 1.5 inches but he/she wont stay like that for long :)
I would say go for something like a 30 gallon, you can get them for 30 bucks at a dollar per gallon sale at petco and pet smart. keep it up with the research, and be willing to wait for the right time to buy the right tank. the larger your tank the smaller the amount of water changes you will have to do.

I had one of those fairground bag goldfish for around 6 or 7 years that grew to 6"... he jumped out of the tank once. I have no idea how long he was out for, but when we found him we put him back in the water and he lived. We got a mesh lid after that.

Thanks for a great video series! I've kept fish for a lot of years, but it's neat to learn how caring for goldfish can have its own unique challenges and rewards.
FYI, not all tap water has chlorine - just all city water :) If you live in the country or on an acreage, you likely have well water with nothing added. Also, when you add bubbles, gas transfer happens while the bubbles are floating up, so you get a lot more benefit than just the surface movement.

Great start up video! My daughter is started with 2 Fancy Goldfish that went from a bowl, to 10 gallon tank which are now going to to 75 Gallon long tank. Watching. Your videos convinced me the 2 original tanks were way too small. Anyhow, the issue I am having with the 10 gallon tank is the levels of Nitrate and Nitrite are non existent however ammonia creeps up daily forcing me to perform almost daily 25-50% water changes. Will using the Prime when filling and starting the new 75 gallon tank help me with cycling outlined in this video? Thanks for doing these...very informative.
Joe Giz (im aware it’s been 3 years) don’t quote me on this, but if there is fish in the 10 gallon, there will always be ammonia, it just depend on how long it takes for it to convert. If the test on the water goes well, I’d put half of it (or all) in your 75! It’ll help the cycle boost start, but it still needs help. Now to the present, How are your goldfish? Hope your tank got sorted out!!

I live in a small country, and I never heard of things like cycling a tank, or most of the tools and products you talk about, and I feel like I really learned with you, it is not something the fish shops talk about, maybe it's my own lack of atention, but I am very interested when I go to a store, my fish are luckily happy and healthy, they never got sick, I have a pond with koi fishes and goldfishes for years, but there are so many safety cares and rules you use when introducing new fishes, that I never heard about in real life, to be honest it's been a long time I didn't added new fishes, because they make babies every year and that's the best part of it, but you just taught me so much really, you are so kind to also leave links to order the products online, once again thank you, you enlightened me eheh :) I'm so glad there are people like you so willing to help and teach how to properly care of fishes

One time my mom got me 15 goldfish and a 30 gallon tank. They all lived for 3 years, and I added more fish, too. They had the babies ^△^ But that was about 5 years ago.

I lost two of my fish from them jumping out there tank..... so trust me it is possible for a fish to jump out of a tank!!! Itss a must to keep a li on the tank
I agree for the single tail variety like comets, since they are quicker swimmers but most fancies should not have this problem.
they must have had lice or some worm ..a healthy gold fish doesnt jump ! they jump when parasites get attached to them and irritates them and thts when u see them jumping n rubbing their scales to get rid off those parasites :)
The only reason I would never keep a lid off is because my cat will mess with the fish and the water
Bad water quality can make fish jump out of desperation, too.
+Radical vibesz I've had two single-tailed goldfish for over a year now and they have never jumped out of their tank. I never put a lid on it and overall I think it's easier for oxygen to enter the tank, plus you can see your fish from above without a lid which is pretty neat. The only reason a goldfish would jump out of a tank would be if it's highly stressed out or frightened. This is caused by poor water quality, small volumes of water, aggresive tank mates, etc.

Hi Solid Gold, I have a natural earth pond that is 120 feet across and 14 feet deep at the center. Is this an ok environment for everyday goldfish? I was thinking that I would like to select some nice looking feeder fish and just let them grow up in the pond. What's your opinion on that? There are lots of lilies and natural cover with mostly open surface area. Thanks in advance for your fabulous advice :) Thumbs up on this video!

I went to my friends' grandma's house and when I went to the basement I was greeted with a bunch of koi in kiddy pools and large tanks. She had moved them there from the pond for the winter so I'd say that's a good place for fish.

More goldies? XD maybe you could get away with some snails... I know someone who keeps snails with his goldies and they don't really get into fights or anything but I'm not sure if they are not healthy for them to be together

Well... Actually not really funny, but my Goldies (4) are old fashion 20cm fish, age about 12 years!!!!

They probably would frown upon a "clean" new age basin.
I raised them in a 250 liter basin with filtering, artif. light, and some fresh plants to chew on. They get earthworms and tiny pieces of meat and fresh spinach to spice up the flakes.
In all those years they became like family members and I dare say they actually know me and at times they even "play" hide and seek with our cats.
Whenever the tank looks "gross" I do a complete reset and the fish feel like moving into a new home.

If u r low on budget then u may buy air pump filter with sponge on it. But i only recommend it to smaller fish. Goldfish definitely need a filter with mechanical n biological filtration to maintain a crystal water.
I had to get a lid for my goldfish because he kept splashing water all over my wall lol So depending on your fish's behavior you may need one

you should probably use gravel thats pea sized. Sands not reccomended for goldfish

a 30 gallon is okay for smaller fish
not ideal for two fully grown fancies
in my opinion you should have about 30 gallons per fancy. since they can grow very large upwards of 7 inches. hope this helps.
I have my 3 small fancies in a 50 gallon right now, but they will be moved into a 75 or 100 gallon when they grow a bit bigger. Maybe try a 50 gallon, or you could maybe get away with a 40g.

yes you do have to add in pure ammonia, it usually takes a month or two to fully cycle, this channel has a video on how to cycle an aquarium.
