- Today we visit the mountains of Asheville to visit the man that overhauls the horns for David Sanborn, Bob Sheppard, Joel C. Peskin, Warren Hill, and many more... He is none other than Ken Beason, a sax technician of over 40 years, and the savior of my saxophone that I ran over with my car. Him, the members of Retro Revival (Joel C. Peskin and Bob Sheppard), and the Wei family have created a new horn that have the beloved features of the Mark VI, combined with new features like modern intonation (thank goodness). It is called the Tru-Six.

Rest in Peace, dear Ken Beason. It was an honor to be part of your life in any way. I am fortunate to have captured this video before you passed. You impacted so many people with your buoyant personality and your highly skillful sax-mechanical expertise. You played a pivotal role in evolving how saxophones are built today. Thousands of saxophonists will remember your life’s work forever!
Fly High Mr. Beason🕊
Ken Beason was awesome he will be missed
I was not ready for that intro.
the outro too💀
Yea a ss for sure
That's oscar-quality acting
Getting that neckstrap ring moved is one of the tiny details that makes a huge difference
Facts
Add we changed the left hand thumb rest material more French style, and moved the right hand thumb hook up and over to make it more 6 like and smaller!.
That's why I love when selmer have a 3 rings option for their bari. Very nice
Rest in Pease Dear Ken! It was a pleasure working with you, every moment was a Gem!
I'm not even a saxophonist, but I can't not watch these kind of videos. The passion that these builders have is so refreshing, makes one want to play just so you can "honor" their work, you know?
i used to spend hours down here with ken, was fortunate to live right down the road and get him recommended by my middle school band director. i’m happy i found this video it brought lots of joy and memories to me. miss him alot may he rest in piece
rest in peace, Ken Beason. what a true legend.
Nathan, my man thank you so much for yet another great and educational video. What I want you to realize is that you are not just uploaded you tube videos. You are documenting jazz history for people 70 years from now. Track down old jazz men/women in your area before they pass on to the cotton club in the sky. Nathan, the next Ken Burns. Have you watched that series on jazz? Of course you have. Buddy bolden, Louis Armstrong. Where’s that third brother?
it's always a great day when Mr. Logic uploads😊
It’s an even better day when Alex comments
First time I don't hear a single difference between a VI and a modern horn: the VI and the Unlacquered sounded identical. Can't wait to try one...
RIP sir Ken Beason Weissenberg technician
Ken passed away😢😢 Very sad day
I play alto and I have learnt over the years that if a saxophone isn’t built right it doesn’t play right. If one key is to hight is different of the saxophones body there’s a major different playing feel
Loved seeing this video! Your hair got long! For anyone reading this comment Ken is a master and is “the master” technician for the stars... you name the player and chances are that they have had Ken set up their horn! I met Ken through a close friend in the Sax manufacturing industry years ago and trust him completely with all my horns. Integrity, skill and kindness are a killer set of attributes... this man is a gem! Love you man and look forward to seeing you soon!
Michaelangelo lives in Asheville. Wow! That's amazing!
god that gold lacquered tru-six is the sexiest horn i've ever seen
Such a great tenor! Can't wait to get one!!!
Even though I am sure those saxes are great, there aresome other also great options on the market almost 2000€ cheaper like Trevor James or Eastman...
This is one of those rare times when I actually could tell a slight difference between the saxes, the cognac finish has something that makes it sound better to my ears. I loved the looks of the unlacquered though...
Pro-tip: Once I get my neckstrap in the right spot on a horn I thread the needle of a button through both sides of the straps so it can't slip.
Wow look at you hangin with the big shots. Joel's setup is awesome, that's literally what I'm shooting for.
We're super stoked to have a couple of these at our shop! Curious to see how poeple with a love for vintage horns like this one.
I wish you nothing but the best young man. Take care.
R.I.P. Ken Beason.
10:32 😂😂😂
Gold cognac lacquer #1, Mark VI #2, unlacquered #3.
*Another virtuosic "Bob" (who is new to me!)
*Bob Berg, Bob Mitzer (sp), Bob Reynolds ...
Nathan, beautiful tenor sax sound and articulation!!
Nice conversation and demonstration!👌
Thanks, champion 🏆
bro the transitions are killing me. also stranger danger nate!
loved the video btw. Always good to hang with some greats
I'd definately buy one if I were in the market.
The saxes look and sound great! I really like the sound of the Tru-Six Vintage Unlacquered.
This video hits different now
:’(
RIP Mr Ken Beason
looked away for a second and didn’t even realize he switched horns.
Such a beautiful experience!
They should try a Yamaha Tenor 875EX versus a Selmer Mark VI or VII !!! And then say which one plays better!! I've been playing Yamaha Professional for over 40 years and my choice is always going to be Yamaha because they play easier and are always easy-to-use going up and down to the basement of the horns!! And it doesn't matter if you are playing Soprano or Alto or Bari Sax!! They're all easy to play and you will always get the best sound out of it, no matter what!!!
Beautiful red pads wow
Truly masters of the trade
I would LOVE a unlacquered baritone sax
Dopeness!! I would of loved to spend the day there!
WOW!😄
Bari sax neck strap rings drive me up the wall with the balance sometimes :(
Amazing intro.
how did you get these legends to do that intro with you hahaha
i love sond daisrerrrrrrr
166k? Actually 168k at my viewing. Amazing how that bumps up.
Jesus Christ, Bob is a savage on that thing. Never heard of him before but I will be checking out his stuff
I’ve been in that basement many times. Ken is a genius!
3 sax legends in one video, awesome!
how do you get that "delayed articulation" effect that you do? like 9:54 for instance
I’ll send you a video of it on instagram today
Hey I am getting braces on my upper and lower teeth. I remember you having some. What was your experience w them? How does it affect your playing?
Pro tip: Flossing before brushing is actually optimal :)
Haha funny recall to the car incident
Great Video! Bro the ending hahahahaha
RIP Ken
