    Has World of Warcraft been beaten by Final Fantasy 14?
    Or...
    Has World of Warcraft been so badly handles, mislead and broken over the last few years, players are leaving to look for a higher quality MMO, and FF14 just happens to be there when they need it?
    Either way, the reign of King WoW, may be coming to a close.
    Thanks as usual to all the Patreon supporters, and Twitch subs, for keeping the channel alive.

    I think maybe it might also be in part to the love ffxiv recieved from the developers because I think Square Enix originally made the mistake of overestimating players loyalty to the franchise, and from what I remember it nearly killed them entirely. I think the lessons learned from 1.0 were incredibly valuable to Square Enix and the community as a whole.

    I remember for years every time a big MMO was announced “this is the WoW killer” “will this kill WoW” “WoW Killer WoW killer WoW killer”
    Ffxiv didn’t kill WoW. WoW just kind of went and did a self lobotomy.

    • @ixis
      @ixis 3 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      The phrase itself is stupid, particularly because the lead designer of FFXIV loves WoW, there are devs in both games that love the other's games, and FFXIV never set out to "kill" WoW, or "beat" WoW. It just wanted to be its own thing in its own corner. And it's done so, successfully!
      The only reason WoW is "losing" is because that's the way most WoW-heads see the MMO space, as a competition.

    • @icewolf6062
      @icewolf6062 3 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      @@ixis yes and no. WoW really is losing not just some made up competition but thanks to all these allegations. Their devs are going on strike, players are leaving (many cause they’re unhappy, others in solidarity) and work on the game has all but stopped as the CEOs deal with this ever growing crisis.
      You’re right. Ffxiv didn’t set out to beat wow. It just wanted to be its own thing. But it seems the devs at WoW forgot how to do that.. they got so used to swinging their weight around. Releasing stuff the same weeks as other MMOs just to over shadow them. Throwing out new stuff after new stuff with no regards to their players.

    In my opinion Jesse Cox put it best: WoW is an MMORPG while FFXIV is an RPGMMO. XIV is everything I ever dreamed WoW could be. Primary focus on storytelling, able to play all classes on a single character, a friendly community that is there to help support each other and focus on the casual play. In the course of a year Eorzea turned from just another MMO I was willing to try to my virtual home.

    • @Hexamus
      @Hexamus 3 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      What's funny is that WoW was at its best when it wasn't focused on Storytelling... Because, as it turns out, WoW writers don't know how to write a good story. They want to be complex and have plans within plans and villains playing 4D chess. It's like they saw Game of Thrones and thought that's what we all want. WoW always had a story but it wasn't really expressed well. In my opinion, WotlK and Legion were both the apotheosis of their story telling. Then, what happened to be a fantastic story in Legion somehow turned into BfA...

    I picked up FFXIV last July (shortly before this video came out) after realizing how unsatisfied I was with World of Warcraft's direction. I fell in love with it immediately. I appreciate that it is, in so many ways, the opposite of WoW. It's all about the story and journey, as opposed to WoW's rush to the endgame. I've been taking my sweet time about progressing (I've only just finished Heavensward) yet I've never felt like I was missing out just because I wasn't at the end. I love that when new content is added to FFXIV, the game gets bigger, instead of eliminating older content to make way for the new. The sense of community is also fantastic - most people I've encountered in FFXIV are much nicer than those I met while playing WoW! All in all, I couldn't be happier that I made the switch.

      I actually think that Discord had a larger impact on WoW than any other MMO. I can play single-player games, offline games, be watching TH-cam, etc all while still staying in contact through both voice chat and text chat. I don't have to be playing WoW or FF14 to stay connected to my friends I met in the game. Because of that, the sense of community that has kept me in WoW in the past is no longer tied specifically to that game.
      In fact, I actually left WoW several years ago when my guild collapsed towards the beginning of BfA. I was already quite a bit tired of the direction of the game, and without the guild I had been in for several years by the point I didn't really feel much of a desire to continue playing. Since a good portion of my guild were still on Discord, I was seeing some of my friends posting pictures of FF14 and I decided to give it a try.

New York had a slight population decline in 2020 because migrant workers weren't able to work in New York under COVID restrictions and loads of journalists are already saying New York is dying due to an unflattering technicality. Patch 9.1 sucked and FFXIV had recent events, alongside a couple streamers claiming to quit WoW, so it looks like WoW is dying at this moment. Come next expansion I can guarantee the vast majority of players will come back. I simply don't think the MMO genre is popular enough to gain a bunch of new players at once, and most of the few new players are just going to check out the ones people always talk about. For a very long time, WoW was my life. I want to say I was a fan but, I was an addict. One of my characters had an entire year of login time and I was proud of that at the time. I was one of those people I hated every update, claimed it was killing wow, but I kept playing. I helped alot of friends just because I was good at the rut the game had put me in and helped them with their stuff, I was the guy that always had the rare materials and stuff. There was always something to do, something to work toward. I enjoyed Warlords of Dreanor but I always felt like, the Garrison's were good, but, something was off with the implementation, its what everyone wanted but it wasn't done right. Rather than fix it in any meaningful way Blizzard cut it short and moved onto the next expansion. Legion was a breath of fresh air but, something felt off, the garrison was just moved to the class hall and you were in charge, you got special weapons, you were the hero. I felt like instilling the 'you are the hero' mentality in an MMO is a very, very bad path to walk just because, yeah your the hero along with anyone else who plays and walks your path. Awesome weapon of power, handed out like candy for anyone who wants it. So much work and effort poured into a weapon, along with a new weapon and no other weapons for it, limiting transmog on a new weapon class, because everyone got their I am special weapon. when Legion ended (Which they didn't even end properly) it was on to BFA and more races more encouraged leveling and throwing away a system you spent a whole expansion working on for a new item...that i knew I would spend a whole expansion working on and throw away. I just... let my subscription run out and stopped. I walked away, all the farming all the saving all the rare stuff I had collected, worked so hard on, wasted, to the wind. It was hard to walk away from that but... I did. I was so tired of the...I guess you could call it the runaround, disposable systems that make your progress and ability's worthless just, was the breaking point. The story had gone down hill too since the writer for the books replaced Chris Metzan, and she had some weird thing for Sylvanas and she was just another tyrant and everything revolved around her. The intro to BFA with the war effort and the attack on the two areas was so disgusting I took a break after finishing it at the time.
    Also as someone who played alliance and dabbled in horde stuff, story wise. The Alliance always got the shaft from blizzard, there was no equality it was always 'for horde' the major rework with cataclysm was the clinching point for it for me. The horde got massive continent expanding quest that tied into each zone that you moved through with arcing plotlines. The Alliance got a smooth transition from the the area outside Stormwind, to the fields and that was it, the only over arching plot was the Rambo knockoff in redridge coming back in another area. I didn't want favoritism, I wanted fairness. It kinda started as a joke yeah but, it just always ended up feeling too real.
    I got another friend who is kinda in the same boat as me, we played together since I started, he got me into it. He talks about how much he hates it now, how he can't get in a solid raiding guild and he is tired of it, but.. he just can't get off the treadmill like I did. I keep trying to urge him to walk away like I did, find another game, but his argument is Investment, like mine was. I just...want better for him.

      It can be hard to admit these things to yourself, let alone talk about them, so you are brave there. I too was in vanilla WoW and spent a lot of time there all the way to WotLK (2nd expansion), I was a proper addict. Then real life got me and when I came back in Legion, it just wasn't the same. Sigh. No more same guild, and pushing mythic keys and raids... for what? There was no drive, no point anymore. And the votekick tool was god-awful, people abused it to no end. Once I was kicked out of run halfway there for god knows why... and other times too, even though I damn well knew my stuff, had healed a M12 key with the people of same skill level as me.
      That got me. Now I'm drifting between games, but having fun too. Moreso than I had in WoW since TBC became a thing after vanilla. FFXIV, Last Epoch, Bless Unleashed, Warframe, and some others... in a better place.

But at the end of WotLK, I stepped away from it, I could feel the downwards spiral, a lot of other competitive and hardcore guys in our guild stopped playing too. I heard WoW got back on track for some expansions, but the glorious golden days of the first years were gone. I never considered coming back to play it again. I got on one of those public servers who stayed true to the game for BC but after half a year or so I also let that one slip. I played BC to the death and could only ignite the passion for some months when you had really to grind out the dungeons and raids.

    While blizzard has focused on trying to make as much money from its players as possible. In the scenario he described where 14 and WOW release for the first time as they are now, 14 doesn't just beat WoW, WoW fails and becomes a dead game because it's such a trash tier mmo compared to the others these days. No one would know that wow raids are amazing because no one would put in the effort to get through the games bullshit and get to the good parts. I genuinely do not think people would play at all if it weren't for its established reputation of having some of the best raids and PVP.

      WoW is not trash tier. I have to say that I have played many other MMOs (not FF14 though), spent quite some time with RS and GW/GW2 but WoW hits the right spot between slow and tactical/fast and reactive. It offered just the right amount of challenge in dungeons for casuals as well as for hardcore players. Their original design is the most universal one and that'S why they got so successful in 2004-2010. It is a sweet-spot game for many people.
      You will find MMOs that are better at PVP, gathering, crafting, raids, dungeons or social aspect but you will be hard-pressed to find something that is better in everything AND has a unique visual style to it that makes it stand out and so iconic. It is not the greatest game, it might not even be a good game, but it is very accessible and understandable game.

    As someone who played WoW from its start I do wish for an end. The game I once adored is no more - and that is totally fine.
    Open your eyes to something knew - be it another MMO or something completely different. WoW may not officialy be dead - but for me the World of Warcraft has ended a couple of years ago.

I press button, damage happens. Then, I level, get a new button, and do more damage. The cycle repeats throughout the levels.
    I feel FFXIV is a lot more beginner friendly, since it keeps things simple, and gives you time to understand your abilities before throwing you a new one to test and try.
    It also allows players to come in and experience the whole story, start to finish, on their own time, unlike Destiny 2 and WoW (from what I remember). You don't get to see the game world during "x" expansion. In FFXIV, you move into NEW areas in the world to continue the story. You don't change the current areas, just add onto them.

    What an incredibly true video. There's so much wrong with WoW at a base level even though everyone only seems to complain about the new updates and all the pointless grinds they add but people are so caught up in their toxic relationship with the game that they're blind to it. I'll just give one example out of many: Dual-wield classes need double the weapon drops for them to play at the same level as 2H classes. Nobody ever complains or gives feedback about it because "that's just how it is" when any rational person can see that it shouldn't be that way. There's just so much imbalance and injustice that has been going on for years in WoW so it's failure really seems earned. When people warned that Shadowlands was WoW's last chance after the terrible experience that was BfA they were right and since the expansion was released Blizzard have failed to correct their course in any meaningful way. It didn't have to be this way if they took the feedback and changed the game's direction.

    • @Gohka
      @Gohka 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's funny you say that about the weapons thing. I recently played a bit of WoW at the behest of my friend because I hadn't played FFXIV for a few years (because my FC dissolved) and I was itching for some MMO action. I had played WoW before but stopped playing not long after BC came out so I had little knowledge of how the game had or hadn't changed. The weapon thing was one of the first things I noticed, I started playing a Monk and I remember the first fist weapon I found, I put on and was so confused when my offhand still had a knife or shield or w/e was in the hand at the time lol.
      There are a ton of quality of life improvements in FFXIV that I kept pointing out when I couldn't do it in WoW and even my WoW veteran friends were like "wtf that would be so useful!" like the holding X on the keyboard so you can only click on NPCs. Or being able to change, move and turn on/off every aspect of the UI. How gathering and crafting are much more involved than just right click on the thing or click a button and wait. how the new player experience is actually somewhat enjoyable and isn't just "Get to max level as quickly as possible".
      Safe to say I'm back playing FFXIV now lmao.

    I’ve played WoW since I was 11, I started back when TBC had just released. Granted I was absolute dogshit at the game, and could neither read nor write English, making questing a nightmare.
    But despite all of that WoW captured my imagination and pulled me into a world of adventure.
    I reached max lvl for the first time in WOTLK and an older friend of mine was kind enough to have his guild carry me through ICC, and I got to kill the Lich King. To this day, it’s one of my fondest memories in any game ever.
    By Cataclysm I had learned English, and decided to take a stab at PvP. I almost reached Gladiator.
    I decided to take a break at MoP’s release. But came back a few months before WoD.
    I quit two months into that expansion and swore off the game. But then came Legion.
    The lore nerd in me was giddy. Finally I’d get to fight the Legion Proper, I played althroughout the Expansion.
    I was exited to get back to the faction warfare of BfA, and hoped it brought some exiting new ways to tell a multifaceted story. I was sorely disappointed and quit two months in.
    Shadowlands was the last chance. I really had my hopes up for this one, but after getting Keystone Master after slamming my head against a metaphorical brick wall for months without any new content in sight I decided that this game is no longer worth my time or money.
    I’ll give FFXIV a spin just for the hell of it, but I don’t know if it’ll fill that WoW shaped hole in my poor gamer soul.

    "The best received update was the removal of 17 years of updates" LMFAO... I had no interest in classic and still don't (lost all interest in WoW) but that was basically my initial thought as well but not said that well... I was hyperventilating on that comment.

    Spot on. WoW’s wounds are self-inflicted. They’ve had plenty of time to modernise, but they persist with outdated ideas and antiquated secondary systems.
    No housing, minimal crafting, dull overland content, two professions max, abandoned class design, no innovation at all.
    I don’t miss it.

    • @vladdracul2379
      @vladdracul2379 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The problem isn't the fact that they aren't "modernizing." It's the exact opposite in fact. The success of Classic shows that. The issue people have is that the game IS changing and for the worse. It IS modernizing and unfortunately that doesn't come off as a positive anymore because of what modern games have done.

    • @chakravartin3356
      @chakravartin3356 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's completely the opposite. As the expansion goes on, they try to invent something new, but horribly goes wrong. Players now have very limited stats management each expansion, fixed built for each spec, and many more which some old fans (includes me) think, the old system was much better and give us more freedom in managing our charas stats

    • @theconspicuousmoo8668
      @theconspicuousmoo8668 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To clarify - when I refer to modernising, I'm comparing the inflexibility of WoW compared to its closest competitors and Blizzard's unwillingness to update their systems to match them.
      The armor and costume customisation in something like ESO is light years ahead of what WoW offers, for example. Wear any armor type you like with hundreds of styles that you can dye in a myriad of colours.
      Or the ability to take all of the professions you want (FFXIV takes this to a whole new level of accessibility - everything can be done on one avatar).
      The fact that the best Blizzard could do for housing was garrisons and they've never attempted to provide it for their playerbase is just...I don't have a word for it. Creating your own home with your own furnishings is a game in itself.
      It's features like that that make WoW look antiquated and restrictive.
      Gameplay wise, the best Blizzard could do there is KISS. I loved my Classic adventure where you were unencumbered and could just explore the dangerous world. If they combined that with the kind of features that ESO and FFXIV offer, they'd be right back in the fight.

    It's kinda funny. A decade ago we all said "the only thing that was going to kill wow, was wow itself" as a joke, But here we are. I'm not sure even at this point if they were to make a new mmo would it survive with all the bad blood between them and the playerbase.
    However, I will always be curious as to what project titan could have been instead of overwatch, not to say anything bad about overwatch itself, but it was always a "what if" for me.

    For me, there were two big factors that lead to me dropping WoW. The first was the endless grind just trying to keep up with everyone else. It was tedious and left me with very little time to do anything else - even in the early days of Shadowland, I kept asking myself if this was truly how I wanted to spend my free time.
    The second, and the biggest for me personally, was the WoW community. I am an anxiety riddled mess who had a bad habit of taking shit too personally. So for me, grouping with random people in WoW was a nightmare. So many people who blame others for their own bad playing. Or who would nitpick the slightest thing. And if they weren't being assholes, they were dead silent the whole time.
    FFXIV is not without it's own community issues, but the fact of the matter is that I look forward to playing with other people in it. That is not something I've been able to say in WoW for a long time.

    the problem with other mmo's for wow players is that WoW players are already married to WoW, so when these new mmo's send suggestive images of great content, and overly flashy bosses and emotional weekend pics of fun times. it makes us WoW players hate these games even more! But what is happening now is that WoW has gotten even more abusive, and FF14 has become even more suggestive, so we're daring to try! not only that but there was also a 70% sale on the game at the perfect moment! and not only that, but there is also a great free trial so you don't even have to pay! and there are thousands of refugees wandering together, some might be friends, some might be entire guilds, some might be entire servers.. to the promised lands! and we have gone for so many years without talking to anybody, without socializing, without close contact, that when we enter FF14... We get petted, we get hugs, we get welcomed, we get commondations in dungeons for doing a fantastic job.. and we get confused! and we get danced!.. and even with these new happy times in this new world.. We're still hoping, and begging and believing that WoW will once more become good, once again.. the good thing with FF14 is as you said, it makes you feel comfortable right off the bat, its familiar, friendly and safe. and that's what it does good. but to answer your last question, If both games were released today, with current patches etc, in my opinion FF14 would raise to the top, ESO would be second, BDO would be third and WoW would be 6 or 7.. I don't think it would take by storm as it once did.

      The strongest sensation in FFXIV is having someone's character walk up to you, physically move their head to LOOK at you, give you a cute emote like a hug or a head pat, and then ask "Hey, do you need any help?" and this happens all the time. FFXIV feels so alive and visceral where WoW and other MMOs feel so cold and distant. It's become impossible for me to immerse myself or care about other MMOs because FFXIV does this feedback and socializing quality so well.
      The thing that sold WoW classic for me was everyone's limitations. Having a friendly priest or druid buff you as they passed by was a big deal and felt like a noticeable change. Having to talk to people and form groups and travel to dungeons together. Forcing players to create these micro circles of friends and stick it out through bad runs because you can't just drop and re-queue and face roll all the content. Everyone in other MMOs might as well be NPCs, but in Classic WoW and FFXIV they feel like real people.
      I can't count the number of people in FFXIV who have helped me with dungeons, gear, story clears, etc. In turn this made me become one of those people, and I've tried to help as many people as I can. I've crafted countless sets of gear for free for new players below level 50 and every time it puts a smile on both our faces.
      FFXIV just has this warmth to it that I can't put into words. Something about the tone, the community, the emotes, the ability for characters to look at eachother, interact with eachother. It's probably why FFXIV has such a huge RP (and ERP, hehe) population; because it's so easy to get immersed and interact with each other instead of having a bunch of people standing in a room staring blankly into space while you read a chat box.

    • @serendipitygaming6785
      @serendipitygaming6785 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Mekose It is quite obvious when you play FF14 these days and you get WoW refugees or FF14 players in your group. because wow players don't chat, they don't talk, or joke around. and i am faulty of that too, due to wow. but when you play with a FF14 player, they joke around, they talk and they usually have more acceptance for failure from people, while wow players do not. obviously sometimes that's just normal that people don't talk, but its especially common these days with all the refugees.

      @@trip-qwq Well, the Expansions of FF14 feel like an Improvement to the former one. Playing through old WOW-Xpacs to level up felt like nothing at all....
      Why time-Dunegons? FF14 and ESO allow you to play their dungeons as often as you like. Why Crafting Jobs if the Crafting items are more meaningless than the freaking Worldquest-Trash? Blizz basically forces you to invest you 3-4 Hours a week to invest into Torghast and this Anima- and Baselevel-farming to reach what?
      Some of the Dunegons and Raid are fun in SL but it is the only thing that makes fun in SL and since onebody wants to play tank, you can waiting for hours if you dont want to do it yourself. And being Tank usually means being the scapegoat for failing in Mythic+ Dungeons...
      The story is just forgettable. Sylvanas is playing bad for 2 Xpacs just to be redempt with some Bullshit in the next Patch. Anduin gets turned into discount Arthas so that Sylvanas can probably save him. Blizz Revive characters to rewrite their stories like the whole "illidan is actually good and sane but you morons just killed him for no reason" in Legion when Blizzard don´t even offered you the chance to not kill him.
