The reason Bond looks at the painting so long is because it is a copy of Goya's Portrait of the Duke of Wellington, a painting that was stolen from the National Gallery in London just before the movie came out.

Fun fact: Connory Hates spiders. In the scene with the tarantula climbing up his arm, it was climbing up plexiglass in front of his arm.

I mean, they'd probably do that either way since tarantulas are dangerous.
I heard that they did it because at the time, I people still thought tarantulas were poisonous. Somebody in the move talked about how they had to take the “proper protection.”
@@marcusthecarcass6065 Tarantulas are venomous. They're known to paralyze their prey. Though their venom isn't strong enough to kill humans.

Honest to goodness, I’m so excited you guys are doing this. This is one of my favorite series of all time, and it’s nice to have you guys riding along doing a fun critical review of the series. I’m strapping in for the ride for the next several months!
Excited for this Bond journey, and mostly for Rick's sex count.
He didn't base it off Christopher Lee, at heart the Bond novels are Fleming's hyper fantasy of himself. Yes Lee was a British spy, but Fleming was in British intelligence as well, and spent most of his Naval career behind a desk. This is the product of what Fleming had wished his career had been. And an amalgamation of several people. To say he based it on Lee is a broad assumption.
Their was also an older book series he also was inspired for that where written by an ex minister man

I know his friend in the military and fellow author Dennis Wheatley also inspired Bond some, his character Duke De Richleau is very similar to Bond in many ways, and was in a bunch of Wheatleys adventure novels in the 30's. Christopher Lee actually played De Richleau in a Hammer adaptation of one of the Novels, The Devil Rides Out. The novel and film are quite good if you haven't checked them out. The character is best described as a mix between James Bond and Dr. Strange.
Ian Fleming met a very "colourful" Russian spy in Portugal when he was working here during WWII. James Bond "ended up" with many traits from that real life character...
also Lee was Fleming's Cousin in real life so that is why he became the main villain in the movie The Man With The Golden Gun

The scene where Honey Rider comes out of the water is pretty iconic to bond fans now, and Halle Berry coming out of the water in ‘Die Another Day’ was indeed a direct homage.
Also; they pay homage to it again and turn it on its head in Casino Royale when Daniel Craig comes out of the water.

Technically, Bond wasn't a spy anymore. He was a spy, but earning the 00 actually moves you up to being more of an assassin used to hunt down and kill spies and other "dangerous enemies of the Crown".
With a licence to kill.
Technically a 00 is not an assassin in general, as he often still is required to do espionage, scouting and investigations for MI6
he just has the license to kill which means he can be sent on kill missions as well

Dr No is a good start to the franchise imo.
It sets up the formula well and is anchored by a strong lead in Connery’s Bond.
One thing I really like about it is how much investigating Bond actually does in this…I wish we would get more of that in the movies.
We started singing Underneath the Mango Tree in class after watching it on tv.
Fun fact the reason Connery was picked for the role of bond is basically Of his role in the Disney film “Darby O Gil and the Little People” because the film’s producer Albert R. Broccoli was looking for the perfect man to play the role and saw Connery in the film and knew he was the one.
It was actually Broccoli's wife, who insisted Connery was sexy and that women would lose their minds, but he was discovered because of that film, yes.

Ken Adam, who designed the sets for this and many other Bond films, was an extraordinary set designer. He frequently built sets for the series that were large, open spaces, with minimal dressing, large shadows. He worked on the films off and on up into the Roger Moore years. One specific set he did for The Spy Who Loved Me is particularly impressive, and was lit by the counsel of Stanley Kubrick, to whom Adam turned to for advice.
The actor doing the gunbarrel was not Sean Connery, it was his stuntman Bob Simmons.
Major Boothroyd is actually Q but wasn't played by the famous Desmond Llewelyn until the second movie.
Jack Lord played Felix Leiter, he was better known for being in the tv series Hawaii Five-O. Andress's white bikini is regarded as monumental in the history of the bikini, and sales of the two-piece bikini rocketed after the appearance of Andress in Dr. No. She also helped design it.
The painting was Goya's Portrait of the Duke of Wellington, which had recently been stolen in 1961. Viewers would likely have been familiar with the theft, which was widely published at the time.

Best Bond movies are From Russia with Love, Goldfinger, On her Majesty’s secret service, Live and Let die, Spy Who loved, Living daylights, Licences to kill, Goldeneye, Casino Royale and Skyfall, imo. Also, Rodger Moore has more dark moments than people give him credit for.
The stuntmans name was Bob Simmons, he's iconic in the stunt world, and probably one of the best stuntmen there ever was
The blue car in Dr No is a Sunbeam Alpine - the car used in Get Smart was a Sunbeam Tiger.
I already can't wait for Eric's reaction to some of the Bond villains, like Oddjob, Nick-Nack and Jaws.

That painting is actually a portrait of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, an Anglo Irish solider who was a powerful political figure in British history.
That portrait of him was stolen from the National Gallery in London in 1961, so the inclusion of it here is more than anything a British pop culture joke. It wasn’t until 1965 that a disabled pensioner confessed to stealing the picture, saying he stole it in protest of British TV licensing fees.

The Five Doctors wasn't a "Cinema" movie. It was basically a few TV episodes stuck together. So don't be too rough on it.
Additionally, Doctor Who was a science fiction serial made on the budget of a half-hour sitcom, with no bonuses for effects, props, or sets. It's incredible the show even kept going.

@@roryotoole3279 "a kids show" - not really, it was always planned as a family show to bridge the gap between the end of Saturday sports programming and the start of the evening schedules. The producers were supposed to hold the adult audience while also picking up younger viewers.
With all due respect, but the comparison of The Five Doctors with Return of the Jedi couldn't be more unfair. Unlike Lucasfilm, BBC did not have 40 million to spend on The Five Doctors. Also, The Five Doctors is not a movie, it is an episode of a TV series with extended length.

blind wave guys, ursula andress who played honey ryder, became the first bond girl.
The Honey character was supposed to be experimented on , slowly eaten by giant crabs (like in the book) and see what pain a human can stand (her pink pants off means more flesh exposed) . The crabs were flown in on ice and were dead DOA , so they had to quickly change the scene to a drowning scene.

My dad was a huge Bond fan, named me after him in fact, and he told me more than once about seeing Dr No at the drive-in with his parents in ’62. He would have been 11 at the time, and, according to him, Ursula Andress coming out of the ocean in that bikini left QUITE an impression on the young man. Hard for us to appreciate, I think, given the change in cultural norms.
James Bond films were a huge part of my childhood. Would love watching the Sean Connery and Roger Moore films with my parents on the tv. You guys will definitely have a fun time watching these.

That painting had been stolen from the National Gallery a couple weeks before filming began and had been prominent in the news so they painted a copy for the film and made it look like it had been stolen by SPECTRE. :D

@@mohammedashian8094 Until recently they never bothered with continuity in the Bond films, not that much anyway. The last three Blofeld films confused the hell out of me when I was wee and saw them for the first time. I had quite a bit of fun trying to come up with a torturous fictional explanation that accounted for the variations. 🤣
They did rename Quarrel to be the original character’s son when they filmed “Live and Let Die” though, which pleased the anal retentive pop culture consumer in me at the time. So it seems they were changing the books so much that they didn’t bother with continuity, unless they did. ☺️
@@karlmortoniv2951 good thing that the continuity problem was only in the movies and not the books because Ian Fleming was one detailed writer, I’m currently reading From Russia with love and man is it so incredibly detailed that maybe the first 100 pages is from the perspective of the Russians
@@mohammedashian8094 I hesitate to label it a ‘continuity problem’ - it’s not like they made a mistake, most of the people making the movies really didn’t care, so they didn’t bother with it. Just a different attitude. TV shows didn’t bother with it either as often as not back then.
Very occasionally the Bond people would connect a dot or two, like with Quarrel Jr, so clearly someone in the office was making an effort. The one other striking occasion that springs to mind is when George Lazenby is cleaning out his desk in OHMSS and he pulls out mementoes from the first few films accompanied by appropriate snippets of music from those films. I imagine they were nervous about recasting a new Bond and wanted to reassure their faithful audience that this was still the same guy, please continue to come see our movies, but it gives me a thrill all the same. I always wondered why they didn’t include something from “Goldfinger” or “You Only Live Twice” as well. Maybe it would have been a bit much to have Little Nellie parked in a corner of his office? 🤔
Major Boothroyd was the armourer or Quartermaster (where the Q comes from). So Q was sort of in it.
Rubbish. Ursula Andress was signed to one of the big studios and was married to John Derek, the film star. She wasn’t cast from a wet t-shirt contest. The producer saw a publicity still of her shot by Derek and decided she was the face for the part.
Regarding Doctor Who: The Five Doctors it wasn't a cinema movie it was a proper feature length episode but it was a 20th anniversary special and sort of finale for Season 20. Because the show had started on 23rd November 1963 the same day Kennedy was killed. The gunbarrel sequence for where James Bond is walking was Bob Simmons who was the stuntman. Major Boothroyd was Q and was played by (Peter Burton) but wasn't yet called that until the next film which is then played by (Desmond Llewellyn) who would remain with the franchise until Pierce Brosnan. Ian Fleming originally wanted David Niven to play the role of James Bond which he eventually did a spoof 1967 version of James Bond in Casino Royale (1967) (unofficial Bond movie) which also had Ursula Andress but as a different Bond girl Ian Fleming was at first not happy with Sean Connerys casting as Bond because of his scottish heritage as David Niven was an english gentleman but when he went and saw the film he was very impressed with Connery's performance. Even though this was well before my time Sean Connery is the definitive James Bond IMO.

I watched one movie from each James Bond back when the pandemic started and some stuff is hard to get through. That one scene in the barn in Goldfinger, for example. I think they might struggle if they go chronologically.

I first got into bond when me and my dad went to goodwill and they had all the Connery and Moore and Timothy films on vhs and my dad bought them all and we watched them all together and dr no was the first I watched and I loved it and pierce and Timothy are my favorite
Firstly I loved this reaction and I hope you guys take the time to go through the other films and have fun doing so, ill certainly be here for it, but I have to comment on comparing "the Five Doctors" to "Return of the Jedi". It's like comparing an apple to a cat and saying well those things are similar lmao One is a multi million dollar movie coming off the back of two of the most successful movies of all time, the other is a tv show that was made with the same amount of money as a half hour multi-cam sitcom if not less in some cases, from a publicly funded channel and during a time in the UK when all TV was still made with theatre as the inspiration as to how to make tv rather than film. I get that classic Who is just a jump too far for some people to be able to enjoy it which is fine, but it simply can't be viewed in those terms of well why doesn't it look at least half as good as "Star Wars" at the time because even that was simply impossible. Not to sound too abrasive, I get that Eric is just making light of it and having a joke for the sake of entertainment and the video, but it's worth noting that if those are the lines your drawing your never going to enjoy classic Doctor Who, and it be a shame to miss out on some dam good sci-fi story telling because it can't compete with Star Wars in terms of production value etc.
Quarrel's death was better in the books... Doctor No is actually book six or seven and we'd met Quarrel before in Live and Let Die and he Bond were friends from that story. They get separated on the beach and Quarrel is killed. Another thing Major Boothroyd is Q yes, he's given a name in the book as is M who's name is Adm Miles Messervy
Dr. No is fine, but it's very much a case of the filmmakers figuring the franchise out. From Russia With Love is a huge step up (and maybe the only film where Bond is doing some boring old actual spy work), but then Goldfinger is where they finally nailed the formula that would last for the next twenty years.
Whilst I love Sean Connery, my favorite was always Timothy Dalton and "License to Kill".
The first two Bond films felt very film noir tbh. But Goldfinger introduced camp to the franchise. As well as higher stakes and over the top gadgets.
Connery being a tough guy afraid of spiders is like Lee Van Cleef being unable to slap a woman in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, having to have a stand-in's arm do it. If anyone had a face that looked mean enough to slap a woman, Colonel Mortimer was.
You refer to 'The Five Doctors' as a Doctor Who 'Film'. Unfortunately it wasn't. It was a TV special (with the relative budget and effects etc) The was also the 'TV Movie' that Paul McGann as The Doctor in 1996 with a bigger budget but still made for TV.
The only real Cinema movies of Doctor Who - or, rather Dr Who (as it was called) were released in 1965 and 1966. They starred Peter Cushing (Grand Mof Tarkin) as The Doctor. The first was a big screen version of the TV serial 'Dr Who and The Daleks'. It was directed by actor Jason Flemyng's (League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Lock stock and two smoking barrels) father, Gordon Flemying and spurred the sequel 'Daleks Invasion Earth 2150 AD' a year later. Both films are really good examples of classic Sci-fi with good effects for the time. Seek them out

If I remember correctly, it's explained in the book that "Pussfeller" was attacked by an octopus (or had one grab him) and it became his nickname.
the point I would annoyingly make repeatedly is to consider 'what it was like before this happened', whether music or film or whatever. There are many superb 'spy movies' that came before this but there had never been one to fk and quip his way through his adventures so purposefully. as unwoke as all of his 'charming rogue' behavior was at the time, this was a part of the twitching of the beginning of the 'sexual revolution'.
He’s a fantasy character. Seriously I miss the the unwoke these days.

I had finished watching all of the Bond films with my dad. There is a LONG stretch of eh to okay, but there several gems in the franchise.
All the early James Bond movies are based to books. Some of them just went off the rails like the Moonraker that only had the name of the book mostly.
NGL Moonraker is a guilty pleasure for me. That movie is so ridiculous i absolutely love it haha
@@ARBLACKx I feel like that's the case for a lot of Roger Moore's films, they're utterly ridiculous for the most part, but he (and everyone else making the film) are clearly having loads of fun, so you can't help but get sucked in and enjoy yourself too

Old Bond movies are the best, the combo of Sean Connery in all his beauty, funny action, awkward dad joke one-liners and hilariously dated shit like the weird race stuff, casual sexism and random pointless sex scenes are very entertaining to watch from a modern perspective lol.
Ah yes, simpler and better times.
Every once in a while, I return to Connery's interview with Barbara Walters and just enjoy his sheer awesomeness on display.

Reading all the Bond (Ian Fleming) books now. Just got Dr. No and From Russia in the mail!! Dr. No came out 3 months before I was born. Yes I'm an OLD f**k that enjoys your reactions!!
Somebody has been reading the IMBD trivial questions.
The deal with the Portrait that Bond noticed is that for a span of like, 3-5 years when this film was released, that painting was lost. Just vanished one day. It's pretty expensive and was quite the news story. So the makers got a replica and put it there to insinuate that Dr. No had been the one who stole it. Apparently in the theaters it got quite a reaction at the time.
Something else you might notice as you go along is that all the good guys in the early films have more ornate, regal sets, offices whatever, while the villains are all in sterile, more technological settings, highlighting the tradition vs modernization fears in the zeitgeist at the time.
Cool spot regarding the set design, I never noticed that. Kudos to the great Ken Adam for designing these beautiful sets

Maybe the camera panned away so that we couldn't see Connery doing a victorious fist pump once he managed it.
This film actually followed the book quite closely but they were forced to change a number of things because of budget restrictions and strict censorship at the time. In the book, Honey Rider is staked out for the crabs to devour her and that scene was actually filmed but they changed it to slow drowning because the scene with the crabs was considered a little too graphic for the time.
This film more than the other Bond's feels a little more dated because it was only the beginning of the 60's and there was still a bit of an overlap from the 1950's. So there are some scenes that feel like a British war movie from the 1950's with very stiff upper lip British acting from the period, the technology available and particular ways of filming scenes like the back projection. It took a while for the 60's to become the 60's. The next one in the series feels a lot more polished and more modern. They had a bigger budget too and it shows. The films do start to look and sound better as they progress.
Honey Rider is a character from the novel but her name in the book was Honeychile Rider. And the reason the book is called Doctor No, is because the character was inspired by the oriental super villain Dr Fu Manchu from the series of novels by Sax Roamer which Christopher Lee would go on to play in five films throughout the latter half of the 1960's. Fu Manchu's name would always be featured in the title; The Face of Fu Manchu, The Brides of Fu Manchu etc. I think I'm correct in pointing out that the spelling of No is wrong. I think the Chines spelling of No as a Chinese name is actually Ng. Obviously western audiences wouldn't know how to pronounce that so he spelled it as No.
