  • My seedling is 3 months old now and was bare rooted just to show the effect of air pruning containers on the root system. It was put back into the same net basket with a nutrient enriched soil mix. This seedling is just a test subject, not really expecting to make bonsai out of it - for that air-layered cuttings are far superior and easier. More text below :

    I attempted the flamboyant tree from a seedling to a pot and it grew very rapidly then once it sprouted up my root system rotted and it died. I am new to this and I did this with little research and have since learned more about the proper way to grow this tree. I believe my soil was too rich and didn't aerate properly. I am in the process of germination again so will plant soon and I plan to do it your way. My question to you is, how many times do you transition the plant adding more soil and do you always remove all the old soil during the transition?

      He he, the seed with 12 lives :-) You are welcome. I consider seeds as fun and last resort. air layering a thick branch with good sub-branch structure is my recommended short cut to success.

      So I transplanted my delonix regia, two days ago and I have major transplant shock. Every single tiny leaf has dropped off. It's about 17cm tall. Any suggestions?

    • @VinnyChirayil
      @VinnyChirayil  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +explain CauseIdontGetIT Ya, i too realized the hard way that this species is very sensitive and mine also dropped all the leaves after this video. Just water less than before (till new leaves sprout) and keep in shade. Mine took around 1.5-2 weeks to recover and sprout new leaves but the ordeal really slowed down the rate of growth. I would not dare to bare root this tree again. I would stop with just some minor root pruning on the outer edge and bottom.

      @explaincauseidontgetit3294 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the reply. I'll give it time. Is yours still growing? Do you still think the basket pot is a good idea? I love this tiny tree!

    • @VinnyChirayil
      @VinnyChirayil  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +explain CauseIdontGetIT yes the basket is still a good idea but it also has its drawbacks, specially in 41 degree C summer heat with hot winds. ideally what i would prefer is a pot like the pioneerpot.com site shows a double pot. Another alternative is to temporarily bury the entire basket in a bigger pot or ground in the hot months and take it out later. self watering solutions are also a big help. this seedling is just an experiment and i am not really expecting any great bonsai from it. if had to redo it, i would keep up-potting the seedling in air pruned containers just like the air-pot.com videos explain but i live in an apartment and cannot have big containers. however, i want to now place my small baskets on top of a bigger vertical pot and the bottom 1/3rd of the net basket buried in it. this would allow more medium for roots to grow into yet keep a shallow root system as well.

    • @VinnyChirayil
      @VinnyChirayil  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Rey, frankly i do not know. My experience says this species does not respond well to pruning. 2 of my trees of this species, including the one in video died due to my negligence few years ago. luckily i had sprouted 1 more of it purely for an experiment with air layering, which so far has not happened. but i now have a 1.5 feet tall tree, shaped like a Y, with bark of a mature tree.

    So I started my seedings in a normal pot.. I have a few one is 4-5 weeks and the other is 3. Can I safely transfer it to a basket and begin air pruning? Or should I wait?

    • @VinnyChirayil
      @VinnyChirayil  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      After 1 month from germination, you can cut the tip of tap root and plant it in a air pruning basket. A general policy i follow is to have double the number of plants that i actually need, as failures can happen for various reasons. Once the results are succesful, i can then decide to keep the best specimens and discard or give away the rest.

    I am growing some seeds, germination has just started and now m doing to do exactly this. One question though, after how many days of germination do I repot the gulmohar seedlings?

    • @VinnyChirayil
      @VinnyChirayil  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Dibya Raj, i hope you have seen all 3 parts of this video. Links are in description. The seed germinated in a very tiny pot. After a month, i moved it to a net basket for air pruning, which gives denser roots. You can use regular pot also and check the roots in 3rd month. The tap root needs to be cut off, preferably after 1 month of germination, provided you have sufficient roots. Else do it in 3rd month.

    Hi Vinny, loved ur demonstration... I've found another expert to follow... Is it normal that the plant turns yellow on the last set of leaves(pinnae) , once repotted ...?

    • @VinnyChirayil
      @VinnyChirayil  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sathya, i am not an expert, just a crazy bonsai enthusiast in an apartment :-) Yes, after repotting, that can happen if roots are disturbed too much. In my case, after this unnecessary root exposure, all leaves except the new buds at the tip turned yellow and fell down. Growth slowed down a lot thereafter. It has grown since and i recently moved this to a bigger colander, without disturbing the roots and things are looking good. This species is a bit sensitive to repotting. For propagation or bonsai, i do not recommend seeds or normal cuttings as they are way too slow. Go for air layered cuttings instead. That is a much faster way, specially if you select a section with good branch structure / ramification.

    Thank you for the video. I am having problem with one of my three delonix regia saplings. all three are grown from seeds and potted . They are two and a half months old and are quite healthy. Recently one of them has shed most of its leaves rapidly and the tip is getting brown. I am at a loss what went wrong. Please help me with some tips to revive it.

    • @VinnyChirayil
      @VinnyChirayil  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Probably it needs more water and some partial shade. The summer temperatures are high and if you have hot winds then that can really suck away water from plants. I sometimes bring the affected plants indoor till they stabilize, keeping them next to a window and water them more carefully. I think your plant can bounce back to health. After repotting my sapling, shown in the video, it shed most of its leaves and took some time to sprout new ones. Now it is in good health. All the best, Bakul Paul !

    I planted a seed of the Gulmohar(Delonix Regia) some months ago, the tree is growing well. What do i do next? I have been growing it in a flat 1ft Dia pot that i fashioned by cutting a 20l water bottle. Depth of soil is 7cm and the tree height is now 1.5ft. The main trunk is getting thicker and the girth of the tree increasing. When do i start cutting? and how do i do it? As of now its not sprouting any branches and the tree is growing only from the one top terminal.

    • @VinnyChirayil
      @VinnyChirayil  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi cardude, nice to know that your seedling is growing fine. As mentioned in my description, for bonsai, air layered cuttings are far better than seeds, for 2 reasons - 1) you can cut a branch already having the final desired THICKNESS. no need to wait for years to fatten up; 2) get LOW BRANCHES, by placing the air layer cut just below a branch split. If you have access to ground, then skip the pot. Else, use a deeper pot. My example is not a good way to do this. Mine was more of a "air pruning the roots" exercise.

    • @VinnyChirayil
      @VinnyChirayil  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With seedlings, getting branches on the lower part of the trunk is a problem, at least till the trunk matures a bit, else back budding will be an issue. Plus, you need to wait for the trunk to thicken up. Hence, bigger the pot, the better & faster the results. Skip shallow pots for now. For clarity on which pots to use when - th-cam.com/video/xDI4zAGSTwU/w-d-xo.html. Once the trunk is of desired thickness, cut off the top at less than the final desired height and wait for side branches to develop. Hi An, you could try any store (including stationary shops) that sells plastics containers/ colanders. I got mine very cheap from a seller on the roadside. Since they degrade in sunlight, i bought extra, as replacements.
      Alternately, you could look for net pots in orchid shops or online. Google "plastic net baskets" as they are usually cheaper than net pots of same volume.
      Also, have a look at my playlists. Some of them explain more on such solutions.

      Hi Elina, at large sizes, a water tank setup is complicated for me. That is why water is resitricted to my smaller plants. It is hard for me tell what is wrong, without knowing any details of what you have done. But some common possibilities are - over watering, use of poor draining soil mix, seedling exposed to direct & excess sunlight

      Hi Ashley, no it is not normal and indicates moisture stress - too much or too little water, as this article mentions : www.ambius.com/blog/why-are-my-plants-turning-yellow/. If your area is windy, some protection might be needed, assuming it is potted and not in ground. Hope that helps.
