  • Blue Devils hornline 2014 Space Chords warmup at DCI semi-finals, Indianapolis, IN, August 8, 2014. Stay tuned for Blue Devils 2015 DCI Finals warmup! Not a binaural recording, but hard not to capture somewhat of a 3D stereo sound, being surrounded by brass players! No ASMR here, but chills are likely.

    Perfect editing choice to keep camera on John's conducting. I hate how most warmup videos give so little camera time to conductor. That's where all the visual action and emotion is. Win.

    I'm sure John's dad (Jack) is super proud of what "Space Music" has become. We played with it back in the 80s when I marched with John under the instruction of Wayne and Jack. Jack had such a passion for making our noise resonate. John has carried it to an incredible level. Excellent work, my friend...!!!

    THANKS HornlineFanatic, very nicely done! As a member of '80 Spirit, I especially appreciate the "Ott Street," sign. That did not go unnoticed, nice and deserved touch. Jim set a standard in Concord and Atlanta. A very high standard. With all due respect to the corps I competed against, and they are due much, our hornline being able to compete with BD meant we were doing something right. I do love me some Blue Devils!

    • @HornlineFanatic
      @HornlineFanatic  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +gpbd11 When I passed that sign, I knew I had to get it on camera. I also managed to sneak that clip into a Spirit vid as well! :) I've listened to quite a bit of the Spirit recordings posted by Roy Perez. You guys made some incredible music, and Jim's writing/instruction was cutting-edge. Thanks for watching and for performing!!

    • @HornlineFanatic
      @HornlineFanatic  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      jimisback What a great time to be in the activity, and also with SOA. Thanks for sharing. Several months ago, I gave a pretty long listen to Roy Perez's 1979 recordings of Jim Ott's instruction, as well as some of the hornline member auditions, and I also read a lot of comments from people describing what it was like to hear SOA for the first time during those years.
      About the quality, to paraphrase a comment I read elsewhere, the technology existed for great recordings...even in 1979...and it's a real shame there weren't more. At least Mr. Ott had the good sense to capture some hornline sounds in stereo...more than we can say for a lot of hornline recordings even today. Otherwise, I'll be happy w/ a crap quality recording if I can get a detailed first-person account from someone who was actually there. Got any links to a vintage 70s or 80s space chords recording?

    • @jimisback
      @jimisback 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      HornlineFanatic Wish I did man. No recordings of the space cord. Roy may have one. He has loads of stuff from what I have see. I got hurt the first week of tour that year and Jim Ott made me stand infront of the arc. It was BRILLIANT ! It took months for the goose bumps to go away. BD was also my fav. corps. Other than Spirit. Man I miss those days.

    • @HornlineFanatic
      @HornlineFanatic  9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      jimisback Someday soon, when the novelties of clarinet features, oboes solos, vocal solos with auto-tune, and even entire-hornline-DJing-on-iPad gimmicks have worn off in DCI, I predict that some rebellious corps will strip out the electronics, shed a valve or two, and give audiences a taste of the DCI G bugle sound again. You read it here. I'm calling it now. A "#Throwback" show is coming...and it will be the talk of the season, the GE score will be over the top, it'll get standing ovations every night, and I will definitely be capturing every sound I possibly can from that hornline.

      Jose Reyes Thanks! I am using Rode mics in all of my videos, but as I have told others, there are lots of great options out today and the best choice depends on what you want to acheive, as well as your budget. Also, it's not only about the equipment used. Other factors such as the capture settings (format, dynamics, etc..) as well as the codec of the uploaded video are critical.

    I have an annual opportunity to see BD live at Stanford for DCI West. Typically, when would BD perform space chords, before the BBQ, at the BBQ or before performing in the show itself later in the evening? And thanks… this is a fabulous recording!
