I have a question..where are the rest of the characters...are they comeing out in a later year..and another box set....I have two of the sets for both the main game and the Norwegian outpost but there are other characters missing..not from the box, but I mean the rest of the cast ,such as childs,doc copper Palma,Fuchs and for the Norwegian out post we are missing,Adam, Edvard(not in thing form,in human form),Henrik,Colin,Matias,Olav,Karl,.........and Griggs...can you provide an answer to this at all...lmk(let me know)

Meeple Mentor is an underrated channel. Thank you for posting this video. Just picked up the retail edition and really enjoyed your video and engaging flow.
Small note:
I think when assimilating a dog by an exposed alien, the number of dogs does not count, because dogs do not have strength.
So even when the exposed alien moves into the kennel with only one strength token, and there are three dogs, the alien can still catch and assimilate one dog and gain one strength token.

Hey great work! I just bought the game and had so many questions with the instructions, your tutorial made it super easy to understand 🤙🏻 I’ve one question though… if all the dogs are out, and for their next re-location you withdraw the kennel, what happens? - thank you
You carry on drawing cards,kennel card only lets dogs out of kennel or the exposed alien can draw the kennel card to go there
Thank you so much for this video. I've watched a few videos on how to and this by far is the best example. I do have a couple of questions. I know you have the Kickstarter version. I now know you can order the miniatures online. I will do that. Can you order the color bases for the characters? Does that come with the kits? Also what type and brand sleeves are you using to protect your game cards? If you can provide all the additional components you are using that would be great. Thanks
Glad it was helpful! I use Sleeve Kings for card sleeves. I feel like the bases came with. If you need more colored mini bases, Stonemaier Games sells some good ones on their website. Also check Etsy.
I watched this twice, played 3 rounds then watched it again. This was a big help.
Still confused/ unclear about using a weapon against an alien and eventually killing it. What happens if I pull a weapon on an alien but it is a 2 and there is another player in the room?
Hello !! little question, when a human uses a shotgun or a revolver to repel the reveal alien, does the human figure have to lie down afterwards, preventing him from playing again afterwards?
Awesome explanation, thank you for that! One question though: Do we ever remove alien strength from the game for good (e.g. with flamethrower or molotov) so the alien will have less strength in the pool for the next round? Or even eliminate it totally this way?
Yes, you can eliminate its total strength, and POSSIBLY remove it from the game! Of course if someone gets infected from a dog, it'll come back. It's the THING!!
At 31:15, a character in Green still needs to pull a token in a Contagion check right? But does not need to give out any.
Also:
Anyone lying down does NOT do a contagioncheck i thought?
This is one of the better tutorials I’ve seen on this game. Can you do one for the Norwegian expansion? You could be the first one on the block:) Nobody has done one yet that I can find.

Thank you for taking the trouble to explain the mechanics of “The Thing.” I have the game & my home currently has 9 people staying here, at least 7 (possibly 8) of whom would definitely be up for playing the game. The trouble is that - without being already familiar with the game myself, & based on your exhaustive explanation of it - it actually seems far more complicated than I realised & I am doubtful that many of these potential players (even though they greatly enjoy many contemporary boardgames) would adequately grasp the rules, even if they had the patience to sit through such a lengthy explanation… 🤔😟 (the latter concern being a frequent source of frustration, when trying to introduce new games to the table).
I think I’ll have to set up & explore the game myself & see if I can pick up enough of the gameplay to be able to explain the rules succinctly enough to the other players, that they won’t be put off playing it altogether - even though several of them (myself included) are huge fans of the John Carpenter Movie. THANKS AGAIN. 😊👍

When placing an Alien Strength token to a location with nobody there, does it remain on the board?
1. Does being on green space affect suspicion checks in encounters in 1-3 player games? Not clear from rulebooks.
2. What happens if thing gets placed in room with 2 characters and one has a Molotov? FAQ says there is no encounter so thing runs away and characters continue doing their actions. Some rulebooks say “lay down the character with Molotov, they lose their action, thing runs away. What happens to the second character in the room that has no Molotov? Does it also lay down with no action?
3. We completely ignored food in 2 player game as the penalty (only 2 item cards allowed) was not that bad. Was this correct? Or, were we supposed to use only 2 action dice when taking actions after food was depleted?
For solo and 1-3 players, when an escape attempt is made, the alien has a last ditch effort to thwart the escape, and rolls dice equal to its "strength". Is the strength (and number of dice rolls) equal to the total number of alien points in play, or equal to the max number of players in a room +1? Thanks!
Played with 5 players the other night and I guess my only question is what happens if an alien is the least suspected player? Can the alien choose to escape on the rescue helicopter?

I based the strength of the alien figures on their order of appearance in the 1982 movie. The dog alien was first, then the alien with Copper's head on the stalk (after his arms were chewed off), the Norris spider-head and finally the big daddy mashup alien.
I do like the minis! They did a good job.
@Meeple Mentor I agree. I had to buy mine separately on eBay since I didn't get the Kickstarter edition. Unfortunately I'm without Childs, Copper and Palmer.
How do you determine who the leader is?
Oh man, I was *so* close to buying this for my group of 3, until I've seen the 1-3-variant which just seems like a mess. :(
I'm actually tempted to add a fourth "player" which would be played by me, though I don't know how to solve the "One of your characters is the thing"-problem.
Yeah, I'm not sure it's ideal for 3. It's great with larger groups.
When the rescue helicopter arrives, the least suspicious player gets the option of getting on first. Does this mean that when it arrives, if the least suspicious player is an alien, it is an automatic win for them no matter what?

Great video, but have a question. If you have an encounter with a 2 strength Exposed Alien and use a flamethrower to remove one strength and have the Alien run away, what happens to the remaining strength token?
You lose the one discarded strength token, and the other one comes back to you to use again in the next round.

I am torn… I recently bought The Thing Infection at Outpost 31 because I found it for a great deal. I wanted to try Outpost 31 since I heard great reviews and there are variants on BGG for less than 4 players. Now, here’s this game, which is playable for less than 4 players. I dont think I really need 2 The Thing games, but I cannot decide which one to keep on my shelf.
Totally get it. I think I prefer the new one, for it's production value and increased player count. Easier to hit the table that way.
26:46 would the alien in this example actually NOT be able to assimilate a dog because its strength is NOT GREATER THAN the number of dogs there?

1 question... maybe you covered this and I missed it. If I'm in the kennel with 1 alien strength, and 4 dogs, I can assimilate a dog. But if I'm in another room with 1 alien strength and 1 dog I can't because I don't have enough strength? Do Dogs add strength to a room?
Dogs don't have strength. The alien can choose to assimilate 1 dog, regardless of their own strength.
Does this have any connection to the original board game? Is it made by the same people or is this an updated version? I really enjoy the original, but I’m not sure if it’s worth it to bother learning a new version of the game unless it’s better. This version seems more complicated.
Not made by the same people, so a different take. It's more complicated at first, but I think it's better.
Where is the max players in a room including dog and aliens
When an Alien Strength token runs away, does it go back to the Exposed Alien Players' pool or is it removed from the game?
Only time an alien loses combat points is one they are subject to fire, e.g., dynamite.
Otherwise, they are returned to the alien player.

could anyone help me understand two rules please?
1.When asimilated by alien strenght tokens (alien vs character encounter) in a location, the player dies but is still on team of humans and if humans wins, he wins too. Why? Why isn't he on team Alien from now on like in all other cases of asimilation/infection?
2. Multiple times I've already heard/read "if the alien still has any strenght tokens left" or "if the first revealed alien was destroyed". Does that mean, that it is possible to kill a revealed alien? If so, how? Like for exmaple, when you use a weapon in location with alien token, you don't completey discard the alien token from the game, right? It only gets discarded from the location and it goes back to the total pool of alien strenght for next round. So how can you kill the revealed alien or lower its strenght tokens permanently? Thank you!
1. I think the reason is that humans dont have a direct way to "switch team" when the alien has better chance to win.
2. With dynamite, molotov, flamethrower you can lower the alien's strenght permanently. The discard that you mentioned is only for the case when the charachters have more strenght than the alien, then it just runs away without doing anything and the token goes back to the alien's pool.

Great rules overview, except I'm pretty sure you are wrong about exposed alien needing greater strength than dogs. Pg 9 states has to have greater strength than characters. Pg 6 states a character as any player who is not an exposed alien. Also, the bottom left box on pg 9 says if exposed alien is alone with dog they can assimilate or sabotage. Doesn't say anything about strength.
I was looking at page 9 in the red boxes about what happens when an alien is equal to vs greater in strength. The equal didn't say anything about dogs, but I see where you're talking about the bubble below all that. There needs to be some clarification on that (not found in the official FAQ). As in, does strength matter?

It’s not entirely clear whether there is at least one single reason for a character NOT to get into a helicopter or snowmobile if there is already someone there? What could stop him from staying at the station and not escaping with the others? If the character is a person and is sure that there are definitely people in the vehicle, there is no point in him staying at the station and losing. And if he believes that there is someone on board who is definitely infected, then there is also no point in staying, because ‘The Thing’ is already winning anyway. Well, if the character is ‘The Thing’, he also still needs to get into the transport as soon as possible and escape for the sake of victory.
You'll have to review the escape rules again.
Only the player with the lowest suspicion gets to board the SOS helicopter. If they choose to board, they reveal their role. They'll likely be a human if they have the lowest suspicion. If they don't board, no one can that round. If they board, they then decide if they want to allow the next player with the lowest suspicion onto the helicopter. If a player is allowed on, they immediately reveal their role. If they are an alien, the game ends- the aliens win. The humans already on the helicopter discuss if the next player should be allowed on.
The same goes with the other helicopter and snowcat, except the first player on does not necessarily have to be the one with the lowest suspicion. They just have to have the keys and be assigned a USE action by the leader. Then, the same boarding rules apply.
Can the Alien be killed?

Yes, you can reduce its strength to zero. Explosives and flamethrowers can do that (by 1 each time).

I know I'm going to get a ration of crap by asking this question.....and I suppose it can be a house rule....but why does there have to be a "Thing" chosen at the start of the game....why not let the dog encounters randomly select "The Thing"....this is how it got started on the movie by the dog?......you can say someone will get picked at the beginning, but don't put the infection chip in. This would seriously amp up a false paranoia and suspicion right from the get go
Well if everybody knows there's no Thing off the bat, everyone will go to locations in pairs. They'll kennel all the dogs without a hitch then have a low chance of the dogs being released. Characters can now continue going to locations together to get co-op bonuses, without worry for contagion since everyone knows there's no possibility of an unrevealed alien.
No one will know there's no Thing as it will be told only that someone might become the Thing......you still go through the motions as if one would be chosen and hide the fact no one would....kapish?
@@karatevideosandmore7685 I don't think that's the gameplay experience they were going for. Plus when randomizing who starts, you use the DOG tokens. So, thematically that's the initial infection from a dog, like the movie.
It's a horrible Euro style game with terrible rules. Very disappointing.
If you can get through the rulebook and the teach, there's a very fun game to be found here.
