Samuel Barber (1910-1981) was one of the foremost composers of the 20th Century in the USA. His style is diametrically opposed to the nationalism promoted by Copland or to the populist approach by Leonard Bernstein. Instead, Barber opted for a postromantic vein that included avant-garde and postmodern elements in its later stage; Die Natali belongs to this period so to say. Whilst it doesn’t contain avant-garde procedures, Barber arranged the Christmas carols in a very eclectic mishmash that looks forward into neoromanticism.

One of Barber's best yet most overlooked compositions.

Gorgeous, original arrangements with pungent harmonies and deft orchestrations that almost leave your nose tingling! An underappreciated American master.

Musically sophisticated chorale-preludes on familiar tunes, in the great tradition of J S Bach among others. As such it has limited audience appeal, but the surprise is how many years it took for this to be recorded, considering Barber's eminence. It has that air of melancholy that pervades much of this master's music. But the Yuletide piece that really paid the bills for Capricorn remained Amahl and the Night Visitors.
"Die Natali", Latin for Christmastide, was written for the 75th anniversary of the Boston Symphony, which introduced them under Charles Munch on December 22, 1960. (Probably it was broadcast and recorded, which would be nice to hear.)

Mark Cogley, same household but different composer: it was Menotti who wrote "Amahl." The BSO/Munch recording is now here on TH-cam, in case you missed it.

Oh, but I see you know both things by your more recent comments on that recording. All best.

Beautiful recording, but if I’m not mistaken these preludes are Barber’s op 37, and op 36 is his Toccata Festiva for organ and orchestra, no?

Yawn...a potboiler to make money. There must be hundreds of similar "compositions" out there.

Lol. I was expecting more from this work as well. Problem is I can't hear these these tunes without thinking of the onslaught of musical atrocities that is Christmas. At the very least someone should update the nonsensical lyrics. Not Barber's fault I guess. I turn to Poulenc's four Christmas motets for that feeling of religion around Christmastime that I remember from childhood.

Great and simple, exquisite beauty here. Only a master could do this. I’m sorry some seem unable to respond to it.

Yawn, your "comment" is totally moronic.
