This one is new to me. Barber's music always has a twist of something in it, like an exotic drink. I either wince or savor what I'm hearing, there's just no letting it glide by. This is a show piece for organist and orchestra, a great introduction to 20th century music appreciation, in my opinion. Some day it will be ancient music, beloved and ignored, but still a gem forever.

All and all, this is a virtuoso organ concerto. And not just for the organ, the orchestral part is quite virtuosic as well. Even more, Barber's music is very inspired and the end of the work is so exciting.

In a word ... *WOOF!!!* This was my first exposure to organist Iveta Apkalna, but it WON'T be my last! This young lady took that piece and OWNED it, beginning to end and most especially that daunting pedal solo in the middle.
Wonderful work, brilliantly played! BRAVA, Iveta!!!

The pedal cadenza is something else. Ms. Apkalna deserves some sort of award for most creative use of chunky heels in an organ performance! Check out the heel-toe double stops around the middle of it. By the way, the cadenza was evidently the result of Barber's collaboration with organist-conductor Thomas Schippers. Bravo!

@@BritinIsrael I had an old Columbia LP with a performance of this piece, always one of my favorite organ works. I think it was performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra, with E. Power Biggs. The concert notes relayed the composer's collaborative credit to Thomas Schippers for the cadenza.

"commissioned in 1960 to write Toccata Festiva, an occasional work for the Philadelphia Orchestra and Eugene Ormandy pairing organ and orchestra. The occasion was to inaugurate an impressive brand-new organ for the Academy of Music in Philadelphia that had been the gift of Mary Curtis Zimbalist. Also one of Barber's longtime patrons, Zimbalist not only paid for the organ ($150,000 in 1960 dollars) but commissioned the new piece to present it as well. (Barber graciously declined to accept any fee.) According to Barber's authoritative biographer, Barbara B. Heyman, the new Aeolian-Skinner organ was at the time of its building "the largest movable pipe organ in the world, weighing 200,000 pounds and having 4,102 pipes, three manuals, and seventy-three stops." Please watch this at the lowest quality only (144p) since it's just for the music, which is much more ecologically responsible than at a higher rate. Watching this at 240p (which is unnecessary for listening purposes), will increase the bandwith by double to almost tenfold! At 1080 the bandwith is augmented by a factor of 100!
The use of digital technology accounts for 4% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions, as much as the emissions from the world's truck fleet. Of that, a BIG part comes from livestreaming videos, mainly 3 sources : TH-cam, Netlfix and porn.
Let's enjoy this beautiful music by being aware and responsible and doing our little part in protecting this wonderful planet.
