awesome. It's neat to hear how other scores were probably influenced by this style like Prince of Egypt, John Carter (of Mars), Indiana Jones

Yes, completely - all that modal writing definitely influenced all sorts of composers to follow!

What I often wonder about the film is if its the music that made the middle east theme or the movie that made the music theme middle eastern! It still has me wondering if I heard this over say a movie scene set in ancient South America would it still have it's power!

Given that the theme is basically just a I chord alternating with a V half-diminished 7th, I think what we see on screen has a LOT to do with us perceiving this theme as Middle Eastern!

Since William Walton and Malcolm Arnold were both unavailable to compose Lawrence of Arabia..Maurice Jarre was Hired. Great Choice. Excellent score.

And can you believe Jarre composed all that music in just six weeks?! An enormous accomplishment by any measure.

@@brettmitchellconductor Director David Lean was a Massive Prick to Maurice Jarre, especially on Dr. Zhivago! Lean rejected many cues, and doing so, told Maurice Jarre, you are going to Win Another Oscar! And Jarre wrote lots of Music for A Passage To India..That David Lean refused to use. Lean only used around 20 Minutes of Jarre’s Music in Passage to India,..And Won his third Oscar for Composer!

@@sickheadache9903 Jarre and Lean were actually very close friends (Jarre also composed music for Lean's wedding, and later for the director's memorial service). Re-writes and discarded cues come with the territory for any film composer. I interviewed Maurice Jarre back in the 90s and he had nothing but kind words about Lean. As far as Walton and Arnold, they were available to score Lawrence, but when the film was screened for them they made fun of it, so Lean sent them packing.
