Also his "What makes a man Mr Lebowski?" comment like he was being profound and insightful with that statement. Any moron could have come up with a question like that, but he truly thought or at least tried to appear as if he was being meaningful with it. Dude saw right through his bullshit though and was completely apathetic to the question, and rightfully so.
The thing that always got me about this scene is where Hoffman is being fake emotional and breaks out of it instantly to hand the dude the ransom note. That cracks me up every single time.
There is no movie on planet earth where there are more recite-able, quirky, and subtly delivered lines of hilarious genius......hail.....The Big Lebowski. Cinematic Mastery.
If there was only one film I could watch for the rest of my life and no other, it would be this one, undoubtedly. It's not that I think there aren't films that are better than this one, it's that there aren't any other films that I would want to rewatch as much as this endlessly rewatchable masterpiece. Even some of my favorite films I wouldn't want to watch more than a couple times, but I've seen this film I don't even remember how many times.
2:34 I thought that it was just part of the movie’s soundtrack, but Mr. Lebowski is actually playing that song for dramatic effect. you can tell it’s muffled the instant they close the doors, lol
@@kabooby0 Exactly. Just like when he's nailing the boards to the floor, with the chair facing the door, to prevent intruders. The song goes right to the hammer sounds.
The performances of all three actors are perfect. Scenes like this make me wonder if they all knew what a masterpiece this was in the making when filming this
Fuck no they didn’t! That’s the beauty of most Coen Bro’s films, they are typically low budget movies that bomb at the box office but end up killing it! No Country For Old Men being the one outlier...
@@traviscoates6878 Fargo was a big success, it was the movie that made the Coens mainstream. In fact, the main reason Lebowski bombed is because it came up exactly after that big hit and the mainstream was expecting something similar to Fargo. It took some years for people to understand the movie is actually just as great and the only fault was on their side for having had the wrong expectations.
I've never noticed how Big Lebowskis voice suddenly sounds distant and quiet when Dude starts reading the note, that's such a good creative choice and it's well executed, it's like you're in his head focusing on reading the note, almost like he's no longer in the same room
So Im in San Antonio in 1999-200, staying with friends who have their own spot and low playing entertainment industry gigs, where we stayed in all day to save every penny we had for the club where we had some clout. One day, Big Mike tells me, "Im paying $150/month for this fucking satellite dish, so we are going to watch something on it right now." We checked the guide, and TBL was the only moving starting right then. We had no idea what it was about or what to expect, but right after it ended we both looked at each other and said, "that was one of the greatest movies ever made." What a lucky way to find this masterpiece.
When he closes the door and the music is still playing in the room 😂 you realise it’s not part of the soundtrack… he’s actually staring into the fire with the music on full blast 😂
The subtle genius of the fact that, you'll never really know if the Dude is saying "fuckin a" as a response to Lebowski's question, or if it's a reaction to the really strong J, since the question and the inhale happened at the same time 😂
I love how the music starts off non-diegetic and then becomes diegetic when the Dude leaves the room. They actually do that a couple of times in this movie.
The music/speech match exceptionally well in this scene, you can hear it especially starting at 0:21. Great sound editing, music selection, writing and acting shown in this scene and indeed the whole movie... ah look at me, I'm ramblin' again

I like it when he says "we've had some terrible news, Mr Lebowski is in seclusion in the East Wing..." it's not clear if he meant he's in seclusion because of the terrible news or the terrible news is that Mr Lebowski is in seclusion. The later is so much funnier and more pompous.
2:32~2:35 One of the Top 3 moments of this movie was That song wasnt film background music , turns out Big Lebo' was literally playing it in his room for dramatic effect lol
😂😂🤣🤣 So many things you don't see the first or even second time you see the movie. Rest in peace Philip Seymour Hoffman. That was genius acting, absolutely hilarious how well he plays his roles.

0:04 The way he opens the door gets me every time.
Haha! Freaking Brandt plays into the Big Lebowski's grandiosity as his servant so much its freaking hilarious. Rest in peace PS Hoffman...
God rest P.S.H. . An actor so great as to make opening a parlor door memorable

Just thought that when he was showing dude in. Damn what a waste of talent. Been 8 over 8 years already.
What a LEGEND
Its like he's taking on the grief as part of his duty or something. But thats, just like, my opinion man.
I like how The Dude doesn't buy into the Lebowski's theatrical preamble
