Jason, I don't know how old you are, but I am 51. Because of that, when I was a kid in the 70's, I was watching reruns after school of a show from the 1960s called "The Odd Couple."
I remember distinctly when the character "Felix" in that show got a Rolex watch. He was really proud of it, and driving all of the other characters nuts because he wouldn't shut up about it. He talked about it's features, that were "unheard of" by anyone who did not own a very expensive Swiss Watch.
It wound itself using your body motion, the second hand was smooth and didn't tick...etc. The point is, all we know today as an "automatic watch" was a new and BIG deal when that show aired in the 1960s.
Then the patents wore off. Then the Japanese said "oh yeah...watch this! Watch how we can make that technology inexpensive and accessible, because we didn't have to spend the money inventing it."
Now, regular Schmos like me have winders all over our bedrooms, filled with automatic watches.
      Hand salute to the Nips!

I put an NH36 in my seiko snzg. Just had to swap out the gray movement spacer ring for the black one that came on the 7S26. The I swapped the black day & date discs from the 7S26 to the NH36. Install the dial & hands &... well, you get the point. It makes an awesome field watch into an even MORE incredible field watch with hand winding & hacking. Oh! I also installed a sapphire crystal with purple A/R I bought from Crystal Times. So it's a really bad-ass watch. The only thing my snzg needs now, in my opinion, is a threaded screw down crown. It's possible, but kinda beyond my skill level, experience & tool availability. Just thought I would share this, I don't know why. Thanks for another great video, Jodi!

Managed to pick up the Bulova Oceanographer green variant for £249 after Xmas. Wears brilliant , although it's slightly large it's not noticeable because of the case type , like the Turtle. My first experience with a jubilee bracelet and it's very comfortable , really pleased with it.

Jody, Can u please make a video on how to read or analyse a good field/military watch. Need to understand what one should look for. Usage of the big Indic numbers, usage of the 24 hr dial, any other thing that makes one wacth better than other, apart from the specs of the watch.

@@ailleurskholin3462 Thanks, I'll take a look. I'm in Europe but maybe they ship. I saw on eBay that these are often going for 500-600 USD for a new one.
EDIT : I actually just looked at Starbuy and the Blue Angels model shown here is around 800 AUD in that shop. The 250 AUD model is the Nighthawk, which is 250 USD most other places too. It's not exactly the same watch as this video but quite similar and still a fine watch, and much cheaper.

I only hate that everyone lumps all of the "Chinese watches" into one group, and paints them with a broad brush. It is true, China is not shy about sending garbage across the drink. But they do have some manufacturers who create a very decent product.
I LOVE Pagani Design. My collection contains seven of their watches. LOL, sometimes when I am bored, I take my diamond tester and light it up on all of that sapphire on my winders, just to remind myself what awesome quality I got for a buck 50 and less.
Another Chinese brand that stands tall: Proxima. You go to their site and basically design your own watch. They are a bit more pricey than ole Pagani, but man...you get every extra dollar worth!
I like my Japanese watches. I like my Swiss watches. And just like our man here, I too love my Soviet watches. But I have to say that, while I know how to avoid "Chinese garbage," The Chinese watches that ARE worth buying are of damned fine quality!

“they invented quartz in the late 1970s” (while displaying the xmas day 1969 Astron, the 1st quartz watch available to buy in-store) 🤔
Even if you meant late 60s, “invented”? In the context of a wristwatch, did Seiko really have a march on CEH’s ‘Beta’ team working in Switzerland 1965-67 to ‘invent’ a working quartz prototype?
From my reading on this; CEH were 1st to prototype in the lab (Dec ‘66, having started May ’65), CEH & Seiko both submitted prototypes to Neuchâtel in ‘67, Longines 1st to announce a product to sell (Aug ‘69) and Seiko 1st to sell (Dec ‘69).
I can’t find any clear timeline for Seiko’s lab prototype work to compare with CEH - happy to be schooled on this, but seems the ‘invent’ honours go to CEH?

Thank you for this, Jody. However, do consider the Ricardo Swiss Alpine Military watch. Oddly, it's never considered in videos on field watches. (Ricardo have made some expensive vintage watches too). This Ricardo should be a Classic with its superb 12/24 hour luminous cream face and Quartz (Japanese) movement. I prefer it to my Timex Expedition Camper. And, surprisingly, it costs less than £30. Excellent value for a wonderful watch.

Question for you: When people talk about the 'property ladder', they mean that if I buy a less expensive house now, I'll be in a better position to sell it and buy a more expensive house in a few years. The implication is that if I 'get on the property ladder', I can climb to dizzying heights of property ownership.
You sometimes refer to Tissot and Hamilton as they way onto the 'Swatch Group ladder'. Do you mean that I am going to sell my Tissot and that will help me fund a Longines? And then I'll sell the Longines and buy an Omega? Or that I've got a Tissot, I like the Tissot, and maybe I'll get a Longines as well?

Vostok began manufacturing watches at the end of WWII, when machinery and some of the know-how was moved from the town of Glashutte (near Dresden in East Germany) to a location in Western Russia; as part of German war reparations to the USSR.
In 1990, with the fall of the Berlin Wall and dissolution of the Soviet Union, the Swiss manufacturer Les Manufactures Horlogères (LMH), owner of IWC and JLC, and its CEO, Gunter Bluemlein, assisted Walter Lange ( the legacy patriarch of the F.A. Lange watchmaking family who had fled to Western Germany at the end of WWII) to bring machinery/tooling investments back to Glashutte, where the townsfolk had a long history in watchmaking.
The resurrection of Glashutte's watchmaking traditions, with the help of the Swiss, has brought to the market the incredibly fine watch brands from both A. Lange & Sohne and Glashutte Original (G.O.).
When I learned about this town's story, I bought (about 13 years ago) a G.O. Senator as my dress-watch. The craftsmanship on this watch is fantastic, IMO.

hm.. i think, you get the Timex history a bit wrong. The Timex Group (Headquarters in Netherlands) is a Part of th Fred. Olsen & Co Holding Group, based in Norway.. but.. Timex is not sold to these Companies, Timex is all this Companies.. because Thomas Fredrik Olsen, the Founder of the Fred Olsen & Co baught a watchcompany in Waterburry, Conneticut in 1941 (you know, witch one ;) ) and the rest ist hostory. Since then, Timex is controlled by the Family Olson.
but a great list of watchbrands..

Jody, you are a bracelet guy, as far as I can recollect.
When you reviewed the Citizen Promaster, you should have taken the BN0150-61E or BN0150-56E version, they have an awesome solid link bracelet with a milled folding piece on the clasp and a ratcheting dive extension.
It is really excellent at this price point (around 250€)
I have one and that bracelet leaves my Seiko bracelets for dead, even my Sumo can’t compare on this aspect.
