2019 Kia Optima First Drive Review: Kia's Midsize Sedan Stung With Stinger DNA

  • For 2019, Kia has mildly updated the Optima with revised front and rear fascias, some interior tweaks, and one of the best standard safety suites in the class. Pricing has not yet been announced, but all 2019 Optima models will come standard with blind-spot warning, park distance warning, forward collision warning, forward collision avoidance assist, lane change assist, lane keep assist, and lane departure warning. We drive the SX trim with the 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder producing 245 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Kia has injected some Stinger DNA into its affordable mid-size to help it stay competitive in this crowded segment.

    I love KIA I have a 2008 Kia Optima LX! I paid cash for it and I’m so proud that I bought this car by myself and wasn’t handed a shitty deal being a college student and putting miles on it. It’s at 180k now and I literally only change the oil in this car I love it! Can’t wait to upgrade in the future!

    Nice review! The updated 2019 Kia Optima seems like a pretty solid choice in the midsize family sedan segment. Despite the Optima only getting a mild revamp for this model year, it offers a lot more car for the money (including more standard safety equipment)... Not to mention, it featuring a slightly new design. Personally, I find it to be amongst one of the most attractive looking entries in its class.
    All in all, from one car reviewer to another, keep up the great work! I can't wait to get my hands on one of these updated Optimas to review, as well.

    I have never been a car person, other than hot rods or sports cars. My wife and I have driven trucks and suv's for the last 25 years, due to a bunch of kids. However, there all grown but one left at home. I traded my truck in and told my wife to get what ever she wanted. I came home 3 weeks later with a Kia Optima in the garage. My only thing with cars is, I'm 6'5 and 250, cars really dont work for me. I was really impressed with this car. I've got plenty of leg room, and the person sitting behind me does too. Excellent gas mileage and range. The car is very comfortable for long drives. I enjoy driving the car. The bonus is, it has a very spacious trunk.

    Having been the former owner of a 2006.5 Optima years ago, when Optimas (Kias in general) were still perceived as cheap, crappy cars to the masses, it's fun to see how the Optima and the Kia brand have evolved. The Optima seems to be gaining a bit of a fanbase among owners. It's a damn good looking midsize sedan. Dare I say it even looks upscale for the segment compared to the majority of the competition. From what I read, reliability and overall quality is quite satisfactory as well. When carmakers like Ford and Chevy keep pumping out the same mediocre, unreliable crap decade after decade, it's nice to see what a company can do, such as Kia has done, in a relatively short period of time. In about 20yrs, they've gone from making low budget, bad quality cars that people bought only because they were cheap, to making world-class vehicles leading the industry in quality. If I'm not mistake, Kia was ranked among the top 5 most reliable car brands. That says a heck of a lot about the brand. Go Kia!

    Beautiful car like the Stinger... This however is the best bang for your money since many options are standard even on the base model Optima. Better gas mileage than the sporty Stinger too. And not rear wheel drive so no hump in the middle of the rear. I need one 2019 Optima in white or black.

      I have a 2016 Optima SXL and love it! Go for the white. KIA's Snw White Pearl cote white is beautiful. It sparkles when clean and doesn't show the dirt as badly as the black will. The 2.0 turbo get's great gas mileage ...especially on a trip and has very impressive power! Seats are very compfortable & trunk space is HUGE! If my engine holds up as well as many who have commennted here on their late model Optima's I'll be very happy!

    As the owner of a 14' SX Turbo, I'm impressed with the 19'. In regards of which one to buy (Optima vs Stinger 2.0T), I would prefer the Optima for the room. The Stinger has less legroom in the rear, which is important to me because I'm tall and carry passengers. But to be honest, I'd have to drive the Accord. I have a feeling I'd fall in love with its driving dynamics and lose some sexy points for trading my 14' SX Turbo. If the ride isn't brutal like mine, I may stay with Kia. With LKA I won't have to babysit the steering as much on the 19'. Overall, I'm extremely impressed with my Optima. I'd highly recommend it!

    • @Vencarter

      if feel like you'll be disappointed stepping into the base Stinger since you're coming from a SX Turbo. I went from a 2016 optima FE(base) into a 2016 SXL Turbo and I don't think I'll ever go back on trims lol.

    • @brianbfree2328
      @brianbfree2328 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vencarter Yea, if I were to get a Stinger it would have to be the loaded AWD 2.0T. They're running around $38K though. I don't want to spend that on a sedan at my age. I'm tall so CUV's are looking more attractive to my back.....LOL. I'm feeling the 19' Sorento SXL and it's awesome consumer reviews for the last 2 yrs. (Edmunds.com). Very nice video man! Thanks especially for showing up close the interior features and not quickly panning over them like many other reviewers do, and then just talk about them. This is a big miss I would say with most reviews. Do wish there wasn’t so much ambient noise in your driving section, but having driving an optima I would say there is substantial road noise at speed so at least it does illustrate that well, albeit at the cost of being a little difficult to understand in the video. Great job on a pretty objective overview though!

    The 2020 will be more of a design change. That said, we have 3 optimas, 2014 sx, 2017 Ls and a 2018 S. the optima is way better than the Camry, Mazda, and Honda and Kia is coming after all of them, I'm starting to notice more optima on the road and as long as Kia can keep the price competitive they will have no problem pulling ahead. I really love my 2014 sx that I bought new and only has 23K miles on it garage kept (my 2017 has 27k) but if the 2020 is major change I just might trade it in

It has a dual cluch transmission and if drivien correctly you can get over 500 miles on a tank of gas. I got 565 miles. but that means highway 55 mph to 60 mph. But if you drive the way I like to drive 80 to mph to 110 and turning on the turbo you can get about 430 on a tank I drive mostly hwy due to work. Inside seats are super comfortable I feel hugged and secure. the drive assist and lane assist is cool. The cars handles well and looks great. I love it. I agree as well, they do need a new logo it is outdated and here’s what Kia needs to do. With the Stinger, Kia needs to do the same way Hyundai has done with the Genesis. Take the Kia emblems off the stinger, and what they need to do is have the stinger have its own nameplate with the GT1, GT2 and the base models because I just cannot see Kia badges on the Stinger, it just doesn’t look right. I really love the styling and feel of this car. But sadly, they stopped offering the 2L turbo in Korea. They stuffed the 1.6 turbo in there instead. And they really should have gone with the 8speed they have. The Sonata gets the 8speed and the 2L turbo. Since they share their major components, I don't know why the Kia gets stiffed. Hopefully they will address that with the redesign.

    Those wheels are copying off of my moms 2017 Ford Focus SEL with the 17” inch rims. I like how this Kia is more loaded and it gets the same and nearly alike rims that come on our more loaded focus. There’s some stuff that our focus has that I like and some off of this Kia. We have LED lights with fog lights. The sunroof. 10 Speaker audio system with HD radio, satellite radio, Sony audio system, sync 3 touchscreen with voice activated navigation. The 2.0L GDI 160HP engine. Rear sensing system and a back up camera. And ambient lighting at night that lights the interior. Wish ford would of gave the regular focuses bigger turbo Ecoboost engines. Other than that the focus we have is sporty to drive and makes a sportier sounding noise to the engine when you push it it has good pick up. And it’s lower to the ground compared to my Camry. And our focus has blind spot mirrors integrated. And it has emergency sos system. Forgot to mention the speaker we get into the trunk thats the subwoofer in the trunk. 👍🏻. The car also comes with Apple car play and android auto. Forgot to mention. Someone needs to give the focus a try. Don’t bash the car, you need to give it a chance by looking at one and drive one for yourself. I’m not saying I hate Kia. When I had my 07 Sportage ex I liked it but when it fell apart it became a problem and had to get rid of it. I loved the Kia that I owned. It had the 2.7 V6 and had an aftermarket radio when we bought it used.

      The Kia Optima SX has adaptive LED Auto high beam headlights. It also has a far better stereo via the 10 speaker Harman Kardon 630 watt sound system with a subwoofer in the back pillar. Honestly, this Optima SX competes more with an Audi A4/Mercedes C300/BMW 330i but for less money.

      dude, the ford focus is tiny, ugly, slow, and unreliable. you can’t compare that to this. this car looks, better, drives better, is bigger, and faster. don’t even try to compare.

    • @navi_exl
      @navi_exl 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Landoni Vlogs Focus looks better so too bad so sad. The focus is cheaper and has more technology. The focus is not tiny, slow or ugly. It’s a nice looking European car and what we got it for 22,445.00$. Ford makes nicer cars and their sync 3 systems are real nice this car also has navigation with voice activation. The focus comes standard on the SEL more options. And it’s a faster car and it’s not ugly or tiny. The 2.0L GDI engine gets up and goes and it can go to 7,000rpm in S1. Go watch my 0-60 on the focus and let me know what the definition of slow means for you.

    @jeffreytinsley3208 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Sorry but the 2018 Honda Accord and Toyota Camry are also standard with all that safety tech and they're already on sale. And the absolute top trim level on the Optima is the SX-L which is the blue car you've been showing throughout your review.

    • @MalamIbnMalam

The stinger is comparable only to rear wheel drive cars only, please skip this comparison in next optima reviews.

    The "EX" is not the "Eco Trim". It's the next high trim from the base that includes better materials and technology. Also the stuff you said that comes "standard" on all models is WRONG. You have to pay more for it, in either packages or higher trim levels, like the EX.
    Kia flew you to review the car? You have like 90% of the information wrong

    • @77surefire
      @77surefire 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think he is referring to the 1.6 Turbo/7 sp dual clutch combo as the Eco trim (LX-T) because from 2016-2018 Optima (current generation) it was the Eco Optima. Prior to making the 1.6t standard on the EX in 2019 you could only get this engine in the rare LX-T trim. The badge on the back of my 2016 says T-ECO.
      Kia got smart and moved the 1.6t/dct as standard on the EX & left the 2.4 NA engine on the LX trims.
      I believe these safety features are standard on the 2019 Optimas regardless of trim.

      @MalamIbnMalam 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      : T. I don't know about that, for instance, the Camry never had a panoramic roof, and it's not on Lexus. That again was taken from Kia since Kia had started taking younger buyers from Toyota.

    • @Jtob410
      @Jtob410 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Monsieur Africain Toyota is not concerned with Kia taking buyers from them. Because clearly Kia has never even been near the top 3 sales leaders in the segment.

    • @Jtob410
      @Jtob410 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Monsieur Africain further, younger buyers have never been the bulk of their sales and they have remained the number 1 sales leader for more than a decade. So Kia didn’t take younger buyers from Toyota because they weren’t there in the first place. They Revamped the design language Solely to keep people interested in sedans since more people are flocking to SUVs.
