KETO (combined w/OMAD) was the ONLY thing that pulled me out of obesity. I no longer eat KETO, however I'm still pretty low carb and only eat Nature's carbs.

@EE-hi4re Yes, very low carb whole foods is the ONLY thing that finally worked for my husband after years of trying everything else. I do wish Autumn would clarify recommendations for people who have damaged metabolisms and severe insulin resistance due to many years of a bad diet … there are SO many of us. 🙏

My doctor once recommended the Mediterranean diet to me and told me to avoid red meat. When she left the room, the nurse said, you might try low carb. That nurse helped me lose 40 pounds. Now I consider myself on a Whole Foods plan and have maintained my weight loss for two years.

I read the comments about maltodextrin in LMNT and then I googled it and there’s a few health risks that came up:
    1. It has a higher glycemic index than table sugar and causes rapid blood sugar spikes
    2. It may reduce the amount of good gut bacteria
    3. May contribute to chronic inflammatory disease
Would you be able to share any info you may have on it. You said you’ve been drinking LMNT daily for years so I am curious.

  • @Arttevino
    @Arttevino 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

Love your emphasis on food/ingredient quality, nutrition density, protein needs, and teaching people how to eat! You mention several times that “most” of us do not need to go very low carb; however, people who have damaged metabolisms and are severely insulin resistant (due to many years of an ultra processed, sugar-centric, standard American diet) very often need to restrict carb intake significantly in order to begin to see any reversal of that resistance, weight loss, and improvement in health. Unfortunately, that population is not insignificant … you might even say it’s “most” of us.

Love your content Autumn! And especially these ranking videos. I have to push back on the Weight Watchers rating though, as I have done it on and off. I think it should be in the "Good" category (Disclaimer: I am not connected to WW in any way, except as a former/semi-current member. I would just recommend it to a friend).
People love to hate on Weight Watchers without really knowing about it. For example, it is not purely focused on calories, as the points of foods are calculated based on the nutrient density of foods. So a food that is high in nutrients like avocado will be given a lower point value than a food equal in calories that is processed or high in saturated fat etc. In this way, Weight Watchers is teaching people HOW to eat and also pushing people toward nutrient dense foods. Plus, at the core of the plan are unlimited "zero-point foods," which are fruits, vegetables, eggs, lean meats, fish salmon and tofu, legumes and non-fat dairy. Again, this teaches people HOW to eat and also teaches people not to fear food by letting them know that they can still lose weight if they eat to satiety by building meals around the healthy zero point foods. The points really are just meant to allow for incorporation of a moderate amount of healthy fats, flavor enhancers, eating out or adding a moderate amount of things they love like bread, etc. This makes the plan less restrictive and thus I believe flexible, realistic and sustainable for those who live in the everyday world. It can even accommodate low carb and vegetarian etc. diets.
It also has something the other plans don't have, which is accountability and support. Those who pay for a more premium plan can meet in online or in person classes where they get a community and more tips on how to lose weight healthfully despite challenges like holidays or if their family, coworkers etc. are pressuring them to get back on the SAD--"standard american diet". There is also an active and encouraging online "community" available on all plans that operates kind of like Facebook. Plus there is accountability with weekly weigh-ins. Once you meet your goal weight you can become a "lifetime" member for free as long as you weigh in monthly to show you are within your goal weight. All of these things I think can really help someone lose weight and keep it off.
There are many weaknesses ofcourse, like the zero point non-fat dairy, though you can switch to the diabetic plan to remove that as a zero point food and give you more points for other foods, like higher fat dairy. Overall, I found that WW is generally low-fat focused and seems to give foods like red meats high points, although those could be incorporated if someone used their points on red meat instead of carbs or treats. I also think there is too much of an emphasis on losing weight quickly on the scale with WW and not enough on building muscle etc. For that reason, I do think that people often regain the weight. But compared to some of the other plans on your list, I think it is still pretty strong. For me personally, it moved me away from a plant-based lifestyle that was depleting my nutrients toward higher food variety.
I gather that you don't like any plan that makes you track your food, as you find it restrictive, but it seems to me that in general to lose weight a person has to restrict in one way or another--either by tracking or restricting certain types foods, and the Weight Watchers plan seems to be in a healthy middle of both ways.

Thank you so much for this thorough video! Most people do not take the time (or lack the understanding) to research nutrition properly. And even then it can be hard to interpret the information without full out "studying" nutrition on your own. I've been vegan for 10 years and my mental health suffered SO MUCH, I was deficient in many nutrients despite supplementing. This wasn't sustainable for me and I'm so glad I don't suffer long term consequences, but I'm still trying to manage the deficiencies.

I just returned from Italy and was surprised by their diet. They have some type of coffee drink with pastry for breakfast( two different cab drivers I asked said they had cafe and “ biscuits” or cookies for breakfast that day. Lunch seemed to feature a beer or wine or coffee, sandwiches were cured or processed meat, lots of meat featured in restaurants, whole pigs with head in the window were regular occurrence. I guess the Mediterranean diet isn’t really followed in Mediterranean countries so much? Maybe I don’t understand Mediterranean diet?

I think u ran into the people who eat unhealthy because as far as I know traditionally they don't eat that stuff however I can also say from staying in india their pastries and processed food is naturally processed not with all the chemicals we have on the shelves also their vegetables and fruits where I had gotten them from were freshly picked not sprayed with chemicals. We did have to clean then very well to get rid of insects which I wasn't used to having to do but the flavor was so much better than the US. It's in the soil and the freshness. I also lost weight without even trying. Here I gain weight super easily. It's just different.

The problem I have is that I believe there is NO positive health benefit to ANY amount of alcohol. Nothing will age you faster.
At my work before I met my wife they had Slim-Fast in the vending machines and almost everyone was on it.
We were pretty serious about low-fat in the early '90s. My wife blamed it for giving her the diabetes that ultimately killed her.
I was eating ostensibly Vegan for eleven years throughout the '90s, though I could never quite give up cheese so I may have missed some of the poor health effects. But it wasn't doing for me what I wanted.
We did amazingly well on Atkins, but not after we got off of "induction."
More than three years ago you mentioned Carnivore as an alternate to Keto. I researched further and have been eating carnivore ever since. I've never felt better in my life.
I am drinking cacao, cayenne and raw honey, also eating walnuts every day, most in an attempt to reduce blood pressure.
I really appreciate what you do.

"The problem I have is that I believe there is NO positive health benefit to ANY amount of alcohol. Nothing will age you faster." You agree with another brilliant mind, Georgia Ede, M.D. (and I agree with her as well!)
There's nothing good about alcohol. It's pure poison to the body. It's a "Group 1 carcinogen" (aka, cancer-causing agent). Group 1 carcinogens are the most harmful.
Per Georgia Ede, MD, "Diets allow wine and alcohol because people like to drink," there's no health benefits, and anyone who thinks otherwise is kidding themselves. I'm not saying it's wrong morally to drink alcohol - but people are bs-ing themselves if they're doing it for "health reasons" when it reality is screws up your health. messing up your sleep, mental health, etc. extra calories, too. "don't drink your calories!"
Anecdotally, everyone in my family who drank alcohol on a regular basis has either a) gotten cancer and died of cancer, or b) they currently have a stage 4 cancer diagnosis, and are living with it.

Bad part is the Carnivore Community, the cult leaders, followers and grifters, but every diet seems to haave that problem.

I love beef and have low iron if I don’t eat it. I don’t want pork, don’t really like it anyway. Salmon is the only fish I like or haddock pan fried a certain way is okay. I just feel sad especially for pigs and cows but love beef. 😞 Can’t get much purely grass fed here in Eastern Canada anyway. Thanks for the info though. I might just give up the pork. Pretty much have. Bacon is hard. It’s not like if I give up meat that the cruelty is going to stop. I try to get local, free range but what about when you can’t get fully grass fed? I could probably find it but my husband cares more about the price tag. We eat very differently. Can you do a video on lectins in certain vegetables, beans and lentils? Dr. Gundry is always going on about them. I get hypoglycaemic when I eat too low carb.

How can you tell if you are a low carb type person, or if you can handle a little more carbs?

If you easily lose weight when you cut the carbs and rapidly gain it back when you eat carb, you better stay away from it 😊

The Med style diet isn't the same as "mediterranean cuisine". (I live in Spain. Ask me how I know!) There is actually a framework for it and most people in the Med don't eat "med style". (Although they do eat more "med style" than other parts of the world.) I think the best research on the Med Style Diet is the PREDIMED study. Large randomised control study which is rare in the world of nutrition.

I'm sorry but you need to rethink Weight Watchers. WW does teach you how to eat. Americans eat way too many calories and that's why we have so many overweight and obese people. Yes, it's very hard to estimate how many points foods are without using their resources and weighing out food but nothing is off limits which means you can eat protein, fat and fiber at every meal. WW teaches you how to eat your favorite foods in moderation which we all need to learn.

WW's point system isn't only based on calories. Not sure what she was even talking about. It encourages you to eat better-for-you foods.

@@febgetsfitI followed WW years ago, so my information may be dated. I remember some “good for you foods” had so many points so I avoided them (ie AVOCADO). I’m hoping they fixed this issue. I did lose weight with them pre-menopausal, but once menopause hit it didn’t work for me anymore.

There are so many free point foods so we are encouraged to focus on fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins.

No way Carnivore and the lion diet didn't make the list. High fat makes you feel full, it eliminates processed foods, anti-inflammatory and its easy to follow.
