I never climbed aboard the social media train much to start with. I was moderately attentive to Facebook but now am pretty much inactive, because I simply didn't like the experience and most of what people were posting was inane. So, YT is pretty much all I do for social media. Even then, I am selective. Your channel is one of the few I have stayed subscribed to for multiple years. Your content is so real and so refreshing -- and you are so genuine -- that I don't think I will ever unsubscribe. Rest assured, there are many of us out here who love this channel for what it is and come away from it with smiles every time.

Thank you so very much John, I as so pleased to hear you come away with smiles after my videos...they have therefore served their purpose.😁

Quality is better than Quantity. Although some Chanel's have more videos ,it certainly doesn't mean they are any better. So many TH-cam creaters copy content from others that they all become similar, where as your content is unique to you and I always find it a nice surprise when you release a video.
I think it's also good to give technology a break and when I'm out and about I take my sketch book and pencils or my travel watercolor paints and do a few sketches of my day out.
It's so engrossing and relaxing and creates a much better memory than simply taking a photo.

Thanks so much Tim. I've always admired peoples sketches/paintings when I see them doing them on trail, it must be so relaxing. I have never been blessed with that skill unfortunately!

I haven't had facebook since 2015, and I deleted my insta with a lot of followers in 2019. I since started a new one but just to document my PCT hike. I don't spend any time on there. I am lucky that I was able to grow into adulthood pre-social media, so maybe it's easier to live without it. It didn't really take off until I was about 30. By then I'd already built my real life social network and to this day I keep in touch with my friends and associates via email, text, call, hanging out, and even postcards and letters.
Social media is not healthy for society, but it can serve a limited purpose. The problem is that people don't have the fortitude to switch it off, it's no different from overeating, drinking too much, or anything that we allow ourselves to be soothed by. In the end, it's just empty and toxic space and wasted time.

Nice to see you again Mary. I'm a bit different. I don't care if anyone likes my vlogs. Let me clarify. I wanted to undertake the Ethel Challenge and soon realised that no one was following me. So what this became was a set of vlogs for me to look back on in the future when I'm sitting in my rocking chair. So I just did it for me. I'm nowhere near your level but I'm just enjoying it. My last vlog, which isn't released yet, was the Secret Bothy. But what I do is enjoy the hike and if I see a good bit I film it. Some are 6 mins, some 20 mins. But I know I'll never be big, so I'm not fixated on the numbers. As for the girls in skimpy outfits, yeah, I've seen them, wild swimming, low-cut tops, racking the views up because of how they do it, not what they do. Plus, filters. I know of one channel on which a lady uses a filter all the time on her face. Madness. Then you look at pictures and think, how will they recognise themselves in 20 years, so over filtered. I even denied a friend request because their profile pic was so filtered I didn't recognise them. It is very sad to see. Irregardless, welcome back Mary.

Mary - I love your videos and I find them a great inspiration, you have already given me so many new walks (but stay away from cows). Its nice to see familiar locations like broadbottom and Woodhead pass in this video. I don't post on social media so I don't know your pressures but rest assured, your followers know and appreciate you. Don't compare yourself to others, cos if we wanted to see other content we'd go elsewhere ! onwards and upwards !

Nice to see you again. It is true; I exercise at a fitness club and most people are on the treadmill, Stairmaster and even in the Jacuzzi with their phones. They are on calls and just plain not enjoying the people and sounds around them. I leave my phone in the locker and enjoy 2.5 hours of no connections. John from MI USA

    • @MarysOutdoorAdventures
      @MarysOutdoorAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

It really is so much better leaving the phone somewhere else for a while isn't it and just being present with what you are doing. 2.5 hours in the gym though.. I'm impressed!

@@MarysOutdoorAdventures I have to do cardio to improve my heart. I'm doing 44 minutes on the treadmill at various heights and then I swim 24 laps in the pool. I don't know if I told you but shortly after starting the AT, something told me to go home so I did reluctantly. Less than two months later, I had to have a quadruple bypass. That was in June 2021. Since I had been training for backpacking, my heart was strong and I recovered quickly. I returned to the AT in 2022 and hiked in WV, MD and PA but the heat was too intense so I came home. Now I hike locally. I just turned 69! John

🤗😁 hi Mary and dereck.. It is good to see you again and loved that location you were filming at. I sympathies with everything you said and we All need Time Out when we feel the need too. A good idea you mentioned regarding uploading videos, photos etc as I for one when out and about feel I have to share my pics etc right away, where really saving them for another time would be better so I can just enjoy the moment/s by myself and not stress about social media. I often just keep intouch with close friends ( signal permitting) via WhatsApp so they are not worrying about me due to my spinal condition.. Taking a break from social media etc is a good thing and I feel its something I should do also as I put myself under pressure when I have bad days ie severe pain or mobility issues. 😁 Goodluck with the new venture and do what's right for you. Takecare you two and have fun x 😁🤗

Hi Mary. Being the same outdoorsy person as you, I have been following your videos for a while now as well as some other content creators that you stated have “much higher views and subscriptions”. But I can safely say that yours is one of the most genuine channels I have came across. I can only truly say that to a minute number of outdoors content creators (one of them is a Dartmoor based channel which sadly isn’t doing any videos at all now but he is quite active in Facebook still).
There are channels that I actually unsubscribed from as time went by due to the fact that I eventually see them doing it “for the ‘gram” and are floating far away from the intent of reconnecting with nature or worse, are not really doing it for that reason which became apparent as their channel gained traction. It is a sad state of affairs that those creators are just there for “the sake of being famous” as they see the outdoors just more of a trend. And honestly, I cannot see that in your content. Again, you are such a genuine and nice person and I hope you stay as you are as your channel progresses. Also, it is really obvious that you know what you are doing and the outdoors is really your passion. A factor that a lot of channels lack.
And I know without a doubt that if your channel grows exponentially, you will still be the same jolly and veritable lady that always emanate from your content. If it doesn’t go through the highs of other channels though, please do not beat yourself up. You do as you are and it just means that your uniqueness is what shines through which separates yourself from the rest. I will be your subscriber always. 😊❤️

I’ve gradually done this over the past year, no Facebook anymore and I don’t miss it at all. Instagram is very rare too but I’m continually on TH-cam and I seem to have replaced all my time with my past social media with TH-cam so I’m not sure if that’s healthy either? 😂 I really need to get out more so I’m just going to carry on watching your videos for inspiration! I’ve just come across your channel :)

I've followed various people who happen to be vegan on TH-cam, though I am not vegan myself (primarily plant based but consume dairy and fish) - I don't go out of my way to follow vegans for vegan content, if that makes sense. Anyway, I find (the ones I follow anyway) them to be very delightful people. One thing I've heard repeatedly said either in passing or as a repeated refrain, is that there is some suffering of chronic pain. When I was having my back pain at it's worst I was trying to strictly follow a plant based diet. Little by little along with working out and stretching I began to broaden my diet again to include animal proteins and sure enough my pain began to cease. I've been pain free ever since. I would never tell someone else how to live their lives, but I've just noticed a lot vegans suffering from chronic pain of some kind.

Thanks Mary. I recently discovered your channel via the Atom Packs review and have been binge watching your PCT videos. You hiked your own hike so take the same approach to social media. This weekend I did my first English wildcamp with a group of ladies I met on Facebook so there are definite benefits to social media but I do spent too much time mindlessly scrolling.

Love seeing that this was so helpful and restorative to you! You might have inspired me to try it.
As for comparing ourselves to others, well, that’s a fight we all have to face. But I do want to say that I only follow three hiking and backpacking channels regularly (despite browsing for many more) and yours is tied as my favourite! I love the scenery you show, as well as your emotional honesty.
I’ve been going through some health struggles myself lately, and your videos are a constant reminder that I can still get out for a walk under the sky 💕

I don't consider TH-cam "social media" in the same way as Insta, Facebook, or Twitter. Like at all. For most people it's just a educational or entertainment portal. Most users of TH-cam have no social presence on the platform whatsoever. TH-cam is less social media platform and more of an independent media platform. It doesn't require participation, unlike the other ones that are truly "social"
