  • In this video I show you around Calke Abbey and it's parklands in Derbyshire, England. Calke Abbey is such a fascinating property managed by the National Trust. With peeling paintwork and overgrown courtyards, Calke Abbey tells the story of the dramatic decline of a country house estate. The house and stables are little restored, with many abandoned areas vividly portraying a period in the 20th century when numerous country houses did not survive to tell their story.

      I know it feels really weird, Derek is such a gentleman despite me being completely able - but it does make it easier for me to reach the tripod/microphones/camera etc 😆

    Omg Calke Abbey. I'm so excited to see this as it is my local walking spot. I go maybe a dozen times a year. Not only is Calke amazing, there is Staunton Harold House and Church nearby. There are the lime pits, and lots of other walks. The tramway trail is fun for people with kids/prams. I like to go for a hike that starts at the free overflow car park out the back of Calke. You can then head over to Staunton Harold house, through Calkes grounds to the lime pits, then around the reservoir over to Melbourne which has a stunning lake. Then back to the car park. (17km). Thank you for showing this gem Mary, it's one of my favourite places on the planet. I was there on Saturday!

    1000 years, my goodness think of all the history that tree has witness. There's a book by Robert Lacey called The Year 1000. The history shared in that book would be what the little sapling would have started it's life around.

    You captured this place that is so near and dear to my heart so beautifully, it made me “homesick” for sure!! I did giggle at the end when you corrected the pronunciation as I was thinking in the beginning… “that’s not how we say it 🤣” the gardens are gorgeous 😍 The wisteria was just budding when we were there. They do beautiful Christmas lights during the season and those tunnels had little fairy lights along the bottom. You should come back next year for the Bluebells, it’s my favorite time and I can’t get enough of the beauty. That big Oak tree that has branches to the ground is popular with children. My Englishman’s girls all played/climbed this tree when they were little!! Thank you again for this gorgeous video … I could go on and on about Calke myself 😂🥰

    The feelings you get when you explore such an amazing landmark go right to your core, you are literally transported back in time, so beautiful. The oak tree is mind blowing, the eras that it’s lived through, thanks for the perspective when you walked by 😮
    What a gorgeous day indeed.

    Hi I love the place... and lived not far from it... We pronounced it as " Corc or Cork Abbey " If I'm wrong... I feel jolly silly. Any responses are welcome please !

    Mary the video was really wonderful. I really enjoyed your walk thru the gardens and around the different ponds. Puts me in mind of having a nice picnic and maybe enjoying a little bit of fishing. The Abbey was nice also. The stories the old place could tell. Amazing. Thank you so much for sharing.

    Talking to one of the National Trust workers there, they said it actually costs more to keep the place in it's current condition than it would to renovate it. Did you also notice the sunken road leading up to the church? Harpur-Crewe had this dug so his view would not be spoiled by the sight of the peasants making their way to church. Also in the nearby hamlet of Twyford the foundations of the village pub can be found (not easily), this was where Harpur-Crewe believed poachers would meet before making their forays onto his land. One night he and his henchmen burned the place to the ground and as he was County Sherriff at the time, effectively the law, there was nothing the publican could do about it. Yes, the Harpur-Crewe's we real b***ards.

      I don't think they were vegan so we opted for the two cakes that were suitable, we had to try them both of course 😆

    I really thought the reservoir was grand, but the other body of water was just a Mere Pond. Sorry, could not resist. What a beautiful estate, and I am glad that the National Trust preserves these legacies for all of the British people and visitors. By the way, the flowers at 2:54 look a lot like what we call Queen Anne's Lace. I may be wrong on the ID, but do they have that name there for those kinds of wildflowers (OK, maybe they are weeds)? It would be interesting to see if some of the flower species are the same there, and whether we inherited the names from Britain.

    I enjoyed this very much. I guess I come down on the side of not letting properties like this deteriorate much further. I have followed the efforts of the Viscount and Viscountess Hinchingbrooke to restore the Mapperton estate and to re-wild some of the grounds. It would be nice if the National Trust could find a good balance in preservation.

    Just love that they've left it unrestored, Mary - it feels homely unlike other NT & EH properties
    Was the tunnel to keep the ground staff out of view ? I can't remember which house had that design.

      I'm not 100 percent sure, but I don't think so. It used to connect the ale and beer cellars to the abbey's brewery and stables.

    • @padanfain7466
      @padanfain7466 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it was created for the ground staff/gardeners to exit the property out of view of the main house and their esteemed guests.

      Glad you enjoyed it Keith, it was so unusual and I liked it even more than the perfectly restored stately homes for its quirkiness!
