Thank you for this video. I feel the author put in to words, all the thoughts, I can never express in my own words to explain my need to walk. I will likely read this book because I like to learn about the science behind every day activities and the things our bodies can do. Thank you for taking the time to produce this video.

Very interesting. I love your videos Mary. That feeling at the end of a long day's hike is fantastic. You feel more grounded, present and content with the mind quietened down. I would also add the spiritual benefits of walking, especially on wild and challenging routes where you are required to face your fear and self-doubts. The sense of achievement after completing such routes is wonderful and boosts the sense of self-worth, as well as putting you in touch with the vast and sublime beauty of nature and the universe. It actually empties the mind and facilitates a greater perception of the world, knowing that meaning is not found in ideas but in natural law. Also, as you know, walking alone is a very different ball game from social walking. Personally, I prefer to walk solo for a number of reasons. But that's another discussion. :-)

Wanted to recommend two hiking books I enjoyed:

Nice video. “Her pleasure in the walk must arise from the exercise and the day, from the view of the last smiles of the year upon the tawny leaves and withered hedges, and from repeating to herself some few of the thousand poetical descriptions extant of autumn…” Jane Austen, Persuasion

Great review Mary, I really like book reviews . I have an old book called the" Gentle Art of country walking". By John Wyatt .
Which explains the benefits of walking in layman's language.
I have been watching videos on the benefits of barefoot walking or using barefoot shoes and the health benefits of grounding whilst walking. I wonder Mary have you any experience or does anyone have any advice on barefoot shoes. Apparently synthetic shoes insulates us from the earth hindering our health in many ways.

Wow, who knew science is behind walking, it’s such a natural thing to do. But of course science is behind everything, we just have to be aware of it.
Thank you for making us aware, I feel so much smarter and aware after your videos.
For sure I’ll be checking this book out.
Wether you realize it or not you’ve become an important part of many people’s lives with your brilliant ideas, suggestions and experiences. So glad I found your site. 🙏🏻🥰

I first became aware of this book after reading the excellent book by Julia Bradbury Walk Yourself Happy, she recommends this book. I’ve yet to read this book In Praise of Walking. I can highly recommend the Julia Bradbury book.
I’ve got to be honest I’m generally not a big fan of these tv type celebrities but I find Julia a really sweet very genuine person who has had her own serious health conditions not least her mastectomy following her breast cancer diagnosis.

the British encyclopedia must have some reference to the Estrada Real, The Books 🤠🚶🏻🏃‍♀️👑 Mary, a great encyclopedia known even in Brazil. literatura britânica 📚 Oh, My God I saw people walking in the mountains of England 🌳🌳🌳 Hug Mary, you are the ones who used the expression Uai (why) in Minas Gerais. Exactly from the city of Nova Lima it all started, yes, yes, yes. Menina, To enter Catholic and Federal universities in Belo Horizonte you have to choose English or Spanish. Elementary schools have a basic course. My English was basic and I knew some, the book is on the table. There was a test I took in elementary school in English and it was to interpret a text, I didn't understand anything, I got a zero (0) 🤪

Mary, IMHO it should be a " no brainer ". But the mechanics of walking is something that is seriously lacking in our culture. Before the mechanical aged man did a LOT of walking. And in your own country I believe having a horse was upper society. And the poor did a lot of walking. I once listened to a gentleman who had read a book that compared the poor people's minds of yesterday to the well educated intellectuals of today. And it was shown that looking at the way things were written and problems were solved in comparison to today that yesterday's minds were far superior to today's. I believe that. All you have to do is look around at our governments and our society and our moral values to see the wisdom of that article 😮.
Keep on rocking the free world Mary, walk on 😂
