I purchased this radio about two months ago and I absolutely love it! However, I will tell you that depending on what antenna I’m hooked up to, I hear a local FM radio station in the background while listening to my local 2m repeater.
I wish more radios would include modern features. I have a 70D that I've seen said is easy to program, though it is still a mess of tiny buttons, function keys, confusing screen, etc. I have no issue figuring it out with background in electronics, but for anyone getting into ham it's extremely daunting.
I've had mine for about a week now. What a great little radio with some features that the big brands need to pick up on. The BT programing is awesome, the USB Driver was a bit difficult to find and get working, but that seems par for the course for USB programable radios. The flash light is awesome! The red and blue flashing is a great feature. I wish all HT's had flashlights of some sort. The rubber covers are nice and solid and don't pop out like my D74 which has some pretty crappy covers. I found the antenna lacking. While listening to my local repeaters on 3 different radios, this radio would sometimes not hear the repeater and would be silent. My D74 has a stubby antenna and I can hear my local repeaters with it. This has a nice looking antenna, flexible, etc, but it sux on receive and xmit in comparison. Sure it's larger than a UV5R format, but still fits nicely in the hand. Love the color.
Honestly I didn't even try plugging it into the computer yet. Likely I will do that soon on another video. I wanted to demonstrate the BT programming, which I think works quite well. But thanks for the feedback on the USB driver issue.

The only thing I would suggest for radioddity in terms of us blind hams, is to not only speak the channel number, but also have a way that we could possibly put it in a more verbose mode where it would speak the menu. Perhaps we could do this by holding down two keys as the radio turns on, like you can with the THD 74. On a DMR radio, this would mean we could add contacts and channel names etc. keep up the great work.

What’s the FCC id? I’m yet to see them post it to the website. I don’t like this radio I think it looks like a toy, I believe that the inside is just an old baofeng uv5R in a different form. If it had a better chip, and made some improvements to the receiver maybe will be worth it, I’m not paying $100 though for just a Bluetooth feature. When I can spend the same, and get a radio that does 10 watts!
They are on the website. It is NOT a Baofeng. Although I have seen another radio with a different brand name, but Baofeng wasn't it. I agree, it does kinda look like a toy, but the feel of it is really good.
Hey so this radio's encryption doesn't do anything from what I can tell. In fact my App says its called Frequency Hopping. Testing it on a different brand of radio receiving transmission from this one made no different. The baoefeng could clearly hear it. However, when transmitting from the baofeng it didn't receive noise just the light turned green. I assume it's a very brand specific feature. Please let me know if you know what this truly means.
I didn't see anything in this thread but does this meet FCC rules to operate (other then monitoring)? But I see the FCC gave it a blessing for part 15C in both bands.
Nice review. I am an offroader and was looking for an HT that could take a little weather as the top is often off the jeep. Love the dual PTT. I like the looks and construction of this radio, but I would pass on this radio if you use IPhone and/or MacOS. The IPhone App syncs fine and can read and write to the radio but you are unable to set the frequency on the IPhone App and it doesn't save your setting once you exit. Also, there is no software for MacOS, only Windows.
I really do like this radio. But man, there are some downsides! I entered thirty plus channels and a majority of the repeaters had the CTCSS tones wrong after the upload. Literally have to click through each channel after the upload to be sure they’re correct. Sure it is nice to program from your phone, but when you have more than thirty or so, it is downright tedious. I use an iPhone 8 and the UI is kinda screwed up…e.g., save button and save titles are obscured. Don’t bother with the iPad version of the programming app…it deserves it’s 1 star rating on the App store. Also, be careful - when editing a channel you will see a ‘clear’ button in the upper left. One might think that will clear the settings for the channel you are editing. Nope. Clears ALL of the channels! Doh! Bluetooth programming is nice, but not reliable or very robust. I’d rather use CHIRP. Still, water resistant, USB charging, good quality (dropped it several times - it’s ok). Nice radio…and nice video btw 😀
Has anyone tried connecting a Bluetooth headset, ear buds, headphones, etc? I would really like to have this feature. I know the Anytone AT-D878UV PLUS can do it but I don't need/want DMR and its more than I want to spend.

Sounds like it’s built on the same chips as the Baofengs. Chinese hardware designers are just making the most universal products first, and then conforming them to local regulations after. Hence the encryption option; not like I’d trust a low-cost Chinese radio to implement military-strength Strong Cryptography anyway. More like “kid sister” encryption, no doubt.
Radioddity does several models that are Baofengs underneath, but this one has another brand name somewhere that isn't Baofeng. Never seen a Baofeng like this.
@1minuteFlipDoc - yes the voice is the same, but you hear that voice in many other Chinese radios besides Baofeng. This menu is unique, though - never seen it before.
I don’t think that these Chinese radios are garbage. In the 10 years that the have been in the market they’ve been innovative, bringing new features in every new model. They have improved their products in every new step. More importantly, they’ve brought entry level radios to the masses.
That is what several people have said. My only comment on that is what Senhizer must not market very well to the Ham community because I had never heard of that radio until the Radioddity model was announced.
Radioddity GA-510 was the second HT to hit the trash. It's one of those experiences where it sours me on the entire brand. They had a card inside saying just email us for a discount code for your next purchase. Okay. I did...then it turns into give us a 5 star reivew and after we approve your 5 star review we send you discount. Bribing me for a 5 star review? That's a company I stay away from. The GS-5B is WAY overpriced for what it is. Chinese junk. Sorry.
I wonder IF there's a "you-tuber" left out there (rhetorical, obviously - there ARE 3 left!), who does not grovel & beg for money/likes/subscirbes/support. What did you all do to support yourselves, before the evil google-tube came along!?

One might think that will clear the settings for the channel you are editing. Nope. Clears ALL of the channels! Doh! Bluetooth programming is nice, but not reliable or very robust. I’d rather use CHIRP. Still, water resistant, USB charging, good quality (dropped it several times - it’s ok). Nice radio…and nice video btw 😀
What app do you use to program the radio?
It's the app that comes with the radio. Actually you just download it from the Radioddity website
How much are they
About $99, a link to them is in the TH-cam description
Has anyone tried connecting a Bluetooth headset, ear buds, headphones, etc? I would really like to have this feature. I know the Anytone AT-D878UV PLUS can do it but I don't need/want DMR and its more than I want to spend.
Dude! You got the knob and antenna installed wrong.
How?
@@HamRadio2 I'm looking at 4 HT's. On all of them the the antenna is on the left while the knob is on the right.
It was a joke but you missed it.
You know, like National Lampoon's European Vacation?
@@Rusted_Link been a loooooong time since I saw European Vacation. Christmas Vacation I can quote verbatim.
@@HamRadio2 us too.
The question everyone ask, does it pass the purity test? 🤣
can it work with bluetooth headset
What phone is that. That’s super cool
RFinder B1
I read in the manual that encryption only works with other GS-5B radios. Tempted to buy a second to see? We worked yesterday on 540 meters.
Brad-N6GR
hey brother what phone is that you are using
That is my RFinder B1
@@HamRadio2 ok cool been looking at them taking my tech exam on the 7th stoked to take it appreciate all the content you make brother
I bought, tested and returned the Radioddity GS-5B. Programming it with IOS was unworkable (missing buttons and features offered in the Android version). The radio would not connect with my Android tablet. Without useable Bluetooth programming, what is the point of the radio? IMHO it becomes nothing more than another low end Chinese knockoff with an orange case!
I've heard that the iOS app has issues but never tried it since I don't use apple. However, with both my Android tablet and RFinder B1 phone, I had no troubles with programming
IOS, btw.
your referral code does not work. FRIEND discount code isn’t available to you right now
Interesting, since I just got 2 emails from 2 customers who tried it and used it.
@@HamRadio2 It didn't work for me either - says it isn't available to you right now.
@@jordantri I wonder if I maxed it out, LOL
Try this - radioddity.refr.cc/jasonjohnston
They literally sent me an email at 4am this morning with this link again. If it fails again, let me know and I will email them.
@@HamRadio2 That link didn't work either - looks to redirect to the same referral code.
Be free to contact us via support@radioddity.com if it keeps failing. We'll handle it.
Can I do gmrs with this radio
Looking for a good radio that supports chirp? Budget is 150
How about don't buy it. There's no app in the store and no app on their website. I bought it for the Bluetooth programming and it's not there at all. Anywhere.
I just downloaded the IOS App today from the Apple App Store. Wanted to make sure I could download before buying the radio.
@@6guitarplayer I too finaly got it thanks for update.
@@HamRadio2 it's got the same channel announce voice that my Baofengs have.
More importantly, they’ve brought entry level radios to the masses.
put it on a watt meter
is this a superhet radio?
No
I’m waiting for solar cells on the back of those things
I have had mine for six months but under the name of Senhizer
That is what several people have said. My only comment on that is what Senhizer must not market very well to the Ham community because I had never heard of that radio until the Radioddity model was announced.
USB Charging - Pass
Bluetooth programming - Pass
128 Channel memories? - FAIL
$100 for essentially a UV-82 - FAIL
The 2 things you passed on are what makes this radio better than a UV82.
Agreed on the limited channel capacity.
Sorry.
Opinions vary
I wonder IF there's a "you-tuber" left out there (rhetorical, obviously - there ARE 3 left!), who does not grovel & beg
for money/likes/subscirbes/support. What did you all do to support yourselves, before the evil google-tube came along!?
This might surprise you, but neither Google nor TH-cam invented advertising or ecommerce.
The Bluetooth does not work. There is no software available for this radio that works. The site gives you a QR Code that does nothing! Good luck programming this piece of shit radio.
