My wife and I are new to Ham Radio. We recently bought two HF radios (a Yaesu FTDX10 and a Xiegu G90) and required gear. We will use the radios at home as base stations, as well as at field days and at monthly POTA activations and car camping trips. For the portable applications, we want to be able to safely transport our radio gear from home to the locations. We are considering two alternative case strategies and want your opinion/recommendation: Alternative 1: Store the radios and gear in Harbor Freight 4800 and 5800 Apache cases during transportation, and we will pull them out of the cases and put them on a picnic table or truck tailgate when at POTA or camping location, and on a desk when at home. Alternative 2: Mount them in 4U or 6U Gator Cases and put the whole case on the picnic table, tailgate, or desk and leave them in the gator case during use. Your advice is greatly appreciated. Cary (KY4YG)
I wanted to say thank you. I just passed my technician and general exams on the 1/13/2024 with the help of the live streams you have made available. Thank you very much!
@HamRadio2 Again, thank you! I plan on watching the streams you have on extra to get that next testing opportunity my local GARS (Gwinnett Amateur Radio Society) has. I am grateful for the information you make available for getting your license to radios, antennas, and more!
Hi. In the UK I'm on the basic licence. The guys I met at Bletchley Park (hams) said to do the novice to full licence. Just taking my time. My military training is basically the Full licence of old. I RX CW to at least 20s and all the electtonics theory as well. M7XNR
I have as well, but my operating time is drastically reduced compared to my IC-7200. It’s not a very good portable radio unless you’re going to bring a lot of battery capacity with you.
Interesting. I have the FTdx10 and IC-705 (+50w amp) for portable. The DX10 has the better receiver, but I prefer the Icom menu system and UI in several areas, especially for portable. For example: The DX10 menu system isn't available while transmitting. The built-in memory keyer covers over the waterfall display. You can only see one meter at a time (SWR, power out,...). Adjusting the keyer speed or power out is less intuitive because you have to acquire the target from a grid of 30 items instead a mode sensitive list of 3 items (speed, power, CW pitch). The Icom UI uses icons to leverage our innate image recognition ability. As a software developer I see how the thinking behind the Icom menu system is objectively more advanced. As Jason suggests it is a little easier and sometimes more enjoyable. On the other hand, the DX10 receiver outperforms Icom in the trenches with a superior front end, APF and Contour filter, CW tuning indicator, secondary tuning dial for split, and DVI out to drive an external monitor. For Field Day or other multi-radio settings the IC-7300 struggles with front-end overload and may need an external bandpass filter. Both radios sound great but the DX10 includes an audio equalizer for transmit and receive. Finally Yaesu includes a 3-year factory warranty. The DX10 is like a $3000 contest radio squeezed into a $1300 package WITHOUT the 2nd receiver or antenna options. Bottom line: both radios are excellent but there are some real differences depending on your budget and what kind of operating you enjoy. If you're serious about portable pay attention to the receiver power consumption. The IC-705 + 50 watt amp will run comfortably for hours from a 6 AH battery (in your carry on luggage).
This was a great video. Having had experience with most of these rigs, you nailed this one. Good job!. Please tell your friends at the manufacturers that what we actually need in 2024, is small, all mode, all band mobiles and new QRP portable radios. We do not need any more new 2/70 only radios... !!!! 73
I can vouch for the Yaesu FT710. It wasn't available when I bought my FT891, or I would have went with the FT710 field. My advice is to skip the AESS, a $20 extension speaker will give better sound.
I did months of research coming back into the radio family having done it for UK and US back in the 80s and 90s. For me the ftdx3000 was best value. But the 991A was just the best in my price bracket. I mean, come on an ex military radio guy actually having to pay for his radio? LOL. Love Yaesu kit. Funnily enough now starting to learn Japanese
For all the reasons you said about the DX10 is the reason I purchased that radio. Now for POTA I am torn between the 891 and 710 and leaning toward the 710 simply because I do not have to haul the radio far in any of the parks I activate and often simply operate either from my truck's cab or tailgate. Also there is almost know learning curve with the 710 from the DX10.
Bang for the buck, the G90 rules. Yesterday I worked a JA station from Idaho with 10 watts on battery power, into a home-brew 25.5' Rybakov vertical. We were both astonished. I also own a Yaesu FTDX10 which is an incredible transceiver, but it doesn't stop me from enjoying what the the Xiegu has to offer.
I’ve already made a comment but would like to reiterate, I don’t think the DX10 is a good field radio. Its RX current consumption is its biggest drawback.
that great. still using my IC 7300 and my backup IC 735 . I have used the IC 705 and love it. may get one. but what I am waiting is for is what Kenwood going to put out for a base 100/200 watt HF + 6M radio. Kenwood has a great history of great radios . 73's
Great line-up that mirrored my recent decision to get the FTDX-10. Once I narrowed things down to radios over $800 the FTDX-10 (to me) because a no-brainer choice. Greate rig!
Just got my General and I’ve been eyeballing the 710. I’m super paranoid about my old wiring in my 55 year old house…considering just making it 100% mobile and just going to parks or my back yard with a EFHW or buddistick. So overwhelmed with information.
Can you do a video on a hf pots hunting setup? What radio and antenna and what amp? Also maybe a video on how to wire/setup a ham shack. I’m building a new house and wondering what kind of coax, antenna, antenna switches/etc to run multiple radios into a single antenna (I assume you can do that but one a fairly new HAM). How to keep the RF noise down, etc.
Great list Jason, a few made my wishlist, like the Yaesu FT-991A. Wallet says no. Besides I'd need to get very very creative to hide any antenna at the apartment (yes of course I could get it figured out). HF to 6M is the way to go here, 2M 70cm pretty quiet sadly. 73s de K9DWB
Good Advice IMHO! I Really Like The Yaesu FT-991 Its my Daily Driver I Bought it when i was still a New Tech as new/Open Box for a really good deal..lol. But The FT-DX10 Is a Great Radio I have Never Heard Any One Say any thing bad about it what so ever..I do really like it but l also ike the icom IC-7300 to As well as the IC-7100 I Really want one but i dont have Deep Pockets like some hams & i half save and paw n scratch for ever $ i can get...Great Hobby But it can be Very Costly ! Thats part of The Beauty about ham radio ..It Has Something For Every One !
I own both the IC-7300 and FT-991a. I strongly prefer the Icom. I know a lot of people want to be able to access 2m/70cm also but I recommend getting a single or dual band mobile for that and run the Icom for HF.
I agree with your evaluation of the FT-dx10. I've had mine for awhile. It has a learning curve to climb. N4HNH has many TH-cam videos to help get familar with the FT-dx10. I added the Elecraft KPA-500 and KAT-500 to get more UMPHHH. Very happy! ; -)
I use my ICOM 7100 with remote rig to do HF from home. Live in a townhouse community with no antennas allowed outdoors. This rig gets me on HF as well as 2 meters and 440. Great radio
The 7100 is an excellent radio for the mobile, the rf deck isn’t all crammed in a smaller pack and has good ventilation. I have on in my mobile along with a u/v APX 6500 for fm and p25.
i looked at all these radios a few weeks ago and went with the best choice..... 7300. best radio ever :) all great radios but the price of the 7300 with the bigger screen and 4m and 6m was a winner for me
I know you do not like the 7100, but now that I have used a lot more HF radios, I want to say again, that head unit on the 7100 is genius. And, it mounts easy in autos, Plus the big letters/numbers, are super easy to see.
Thanks Jason! I have the IC-7100 and love it. I use it for SSB and FT8 on the HF bands and DSTAR on FM repeaters in my area. I don't take it mobile very much but I do travel with it only on VHF/UHF since I do not have a HF mobile antenna yet.
Salutations from across the Red River, Jason! It will only be a matter of time before I get the FT-991A & the FT-DX10 as both rigs will do special things in my ham shack. In the meanwhile, I am still using both the FT-857D and the FT-897D (same internals, but differing form factors on the outsides) as my daily drivers. As much as I would love a higher end radio, my bank account and desire to pursue other hobbies in this lifetime requires me to make strategic choices in radio acquisition. Thanks to videos like yours, making said choices are much easier to do without the fear of buyers' remorse. An aside: I will be going to South Korea and Japan in a few months for a short vacation. Any recommendations for hard to get stateside purchases I should be on the lookout for? Thanks again for all that you do, and 73 from Southwest Oklahoma!
Awesome review! I have been waiting for Hamcation to purchase the FTDX10. I’m not sure if my gamble is the right one since the hundred dollar rebate will have expired.
Just 3 years into the hobby I am pretty much leaning Icom. Have the 706 mk2g and the Ic7300. Both have done everything I need. I wish they would bring a more up to date 706 and I would be in a very long line of others ready to pull the wallet out! Thanks for the video!
I tried using the FTDX10 as a POTA rig. It’s an excellent radio for the price point hands down but it’s huge drawback is it’s high current consumption on RX. I have available 2 batteries, a 15 & 20Ah Bioenno. With the 15Ah I only get 2.75 hours of use before needing to switch batteries. In comparison I have an IC-7200, a rig specifically built for field use and no longer made, but get 4 hours of use. That’s a huge difference in run time, especially if you’re depending only on battery power to run it. I’m still up in the air whether I’m going to sell the DX10 because my only HF radio operating is done during POTA activations because I can’t put up antennas at home.
We can run HF up here in Canada with a "Basic" license (there's only Basic, and Advanced). The 991-A looks like where I will start for HF operations/shack in a box!
I appreciate your thoughts and perspectives. Just purchased a G90 & digital interface and not currently considering another radio. But great information if I change my mind. 73 Steve AA4SH
Does the YAESU FTDX10 or any of the other 8 HF choices provide All Mode capability (does it include VHF and UHF)? I am interested in which of these 8 provide the all mode capability so that my one (yet to be purchased) ham shack radio could be used not only for HF, but also for UHF and VHF communications.
The ft 991a dose vhf/uhf as well as hf. Its a great rig for a shack in the box as they say. lots of the folks in my radio club run them and they are always a great performer.
So hypothetically… if my friend just passed his general last week and already has a Yaesu FT991A and for really no good reason whatsoever thinks he needs to buy another radio. What radio would you recommend and why?
I like the 7+1 reference thrown in lol wonder how many people know the reference. Great list still need to get an HF rig going to upgrade to my general finally in the next few months.
Kenwood TS590S is my favorite rig. Unlike others you set your menus once and that’s it. All controls are on the front panel. Would never switch to any other brand.
I know the old saying: "Jack of all trades and master of none" but I am looking to get a base station radio at 100watts with ALL Band and I mean everything, I would also love to add Anytone style digital to the mix. Or I would like to come as close to this dream as possible.
Hi there thank you for getting back to me. Speech if you can not see the screen at all so that the radio speaks functions like power and menu options every thing that appears on the display thank you very much Joe
I just bought a FTDX10 and I’m excited for it. I test for general in April, so in the meantime I’m getting my shack upgrade with antennas and proper grounding.
I have the 891 and 991A, but I am thinking about getting Kenwood TS-890S what is your take on that rig (change from menu driven) and what do you think about it vs FTDX 101D. I know what the Sherwood reports ranks them but wanted your honest opinion
What would be the best CW Radio if all you operate is CW. Mostly rag chews? FTDX-101D? But it lacks Crystal Roofing Filter (CW 300 Hz). MP is a bit pricey. Also looking at Sortable Sherwood Rx Bench Tests. Thanks kg4fxg Bill
@@HamRadio2 true, but a cat 5 cable is 8 twisted pairs with RJ45 connector, the RJ12 connector is 6, i think, but could be wrong. CAT5 is used for the microphone though
As much as I love my Yaesu handhelds, my FT-991A went back in it's box pretty quickly. I replaced it with the Icom 9700 to sit next to my 7300 to cover all my HF/VHF/UHF needs and never looked back. The screen on the Yaesu doesn't come close to the Icom and honestly, whoever designed the menu system on the Yaesu should be arrested for crimes against humanity.
Hands Down, the Xiegu G90! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 Too bad our American manufacturers can’t learn a damn thing from Xiegu and make a 100-120 watt version of this rig! 😢
I’ve been talking through 3CX15,000a7 for the past 10-15 years and never got a license lol. I just like watts. I just make up a random license number every time, is that bad? I never cause trouble, just like to DX and talk to all the countries. When I was Army 18 series I learned some languages and talk to them all.
MY TECHNICTION CLASS ALLOWS ME 10 METERS HF. I USE THE STRYKER 955HPC 125 WATT MOBILE. AND I USE THE RCI-2995DX BASS STATION 300 WATT. I DIAL THE RF POWER KNOB TO 200 FOR MY LICENSE PRIVILEGES. THESE RADIOS WORK 10 AND 12 METERS.
@@HamRadio2agreed, they’re nothing more than over glorified CB radios. If they’re tuned properly they’re OK radios. The big problem is they’re usually turned into overmodulated splatter boxes by unscrupulous CB shops.
AMAZING how they can build a cell phone that does EVERYTHING but ham radios have to a al carte everything. There is no reason why they can't make a say 50 or 100 watt all mode HF with 2meters 220 440 as well as CB, FM radio and smash in a Uniden SDS 100 scanner. Please tell me why this is not possible and if you have a good answer I will be shocked. These companies just want to keep punching out niche radios to sell more product. Hell by this time almost 2025 it should all be in a mobile or hand held radio sub 1k.
Too bad the icom ic-7100 is expensive, I am grateful I have a ft-817 that's geared to be portable a hardcore CW guy gifted me I wouldn't mind having 4 more of them so I can run it in my truck, car, home and, travel trailer. Kq4hcu
Thanks for sharing. I nearly bought one of them, but for the same price but a extra 100w the ts480hx 200w cuts through pile ups is a winner. I would buy it again and again. 73 zl3xdj
I have the 991A and it's hands down the best (currently) shack in the box available. I highly recommend it.

So hypothetically… if my friend just passed his general last week and already has a Yaesu FT991A and for really no good reason whatsoever thinks he needs to buy another radio. What radio would you recommend and why?
We have come a long way since taking cals, good to see you doing what you enjoy
I like the 7+1 reference thrown in lol wonder how many people know the reference. Great list still need to get an HF rig going to upgrade to my general finally in the next few months.
Lol I was wondering who'd get that
Would love to see a breakdown of best HF setups for mobile operating
I am a very new HAM, and this is a newbe question. Why are most of the home Base stations only HF, and don't include VHF and UHF?
I’ve got a ftm500 and two 10-11-12 meter rigs I wanna consolidate to one all mode base
All bought within the last two months I want a 991a bad
I use the FT991a for pota. Works Great !!!
Love my 7300! And my FT891
Kenwood TS590S is my favorite rig. Unlike others you set your menus once and that’s it. All controls are on the front panel. Would never switch to any other brand.
I set my menus once on my Icom and Yaesu radios too. TS-590 is a good radio though
I know the old saying: "Jack of all trades and master of none" but I am looking to get a base station radio at 100watts with ALL Band and I mean everything, I would also love to add Anytone style digital to the mix. Or I would like to come as close to this dream as possible.
How would you compare the Elecraft K4D with the FT-DX101?
Dropping a comment for the algorithm for you. Also. You need to add a “100 watt” counter to the video
Thank you very much do any of these radios offer access-ability for white stick operators?? Thank you very much really enjoyed this!!
I don't know what that means
@@HamRadio2 I think that means he's blind.
"Sorta, kinda, some what" LMAO I get it
Is there radios that don't need license and still reach a good distance away
710 is a lot higher performance than the 7300. I don’t have any problems with the 7300 but I don’t understand why you would rate it better.
The beard is epic brother. It was good to see the 7100 on the list. Such a solid rig. 73, K0STH
Hey man, long time no see. Thanks for commenting, hope you are doing well.
I have the 891 and 991A, but I am thinking about getting Kenwood TS-890S what is your take on that rig (change from menu driven) and what do you think about it vs FTDX 101D. I know what the Sherwood reports ranks them but wanted your honest opinion
I think the TS-890 is a great radio. It is in a higher class of radios from the ones discussed on this video, but it is a fantastic rig.
Checking in on my buddy. Keep the great videos coming, my Dude. 😎
Thanks for the visit
The FT-710 was actually released in late 2022.
The Field model was released in 2023
What would be the best CW Radio if all you operate is CW. Mostly rag chews? FTDX-101D? But it lacks Crystal Roofing Filter (CW 300 Hz). MP is a bit pricey. Also looking at Sortable Sherwood Rx Bench Tests. Thanks kg4fxg Bill
I'm going to put together another video that details all of those radios also, stay tuned. Please subscribe
Thank you and I look forward to that video. @@HamRadio2
I appreciate your videos and the info you share. Thanks!
My pleasure!
There is a new interface named DE-19 for the G90. Fully enclosed and uses usb.
I've seen that but haven't tried it
7300 or FT710, please? Money no object (btwn them two only)
710
@@HamRadio2I’m curious as to why you ranked the 7300 ahead of the 710 if you prefer the latter?
@@spython1553 about 4:00 in he said he was going lowest price to highest price
Hello Jason the field radio would be my favorite ❤
Good review. I like your take on the G90
Thanks! 👍
The best radio is that you love and matches your antenna gain.
Own a 7300, ft710 and a ft891. Dollar for dollar.... ft710 is the best deal going.
Agreed
What about the IC-718 for beginners????? JohnBoyUtah KJ7TBR😎🇺🇸📡🎙
They can't decide if that radio is discontinued or still in production
It's almost as if they didn't discount the 991 because they know we'll eventually just give in and buy one.
Thank you Yaesu for the thumbs up. 偉大なラジオの覇者たちに感謝します。
The FT-710 can also do record and playback for all you POTAs.
Yes
Great video thanks
Samsung or Apple needs to make o rig and i bet it would do EVERYTHING including a scanner that's equal or better than a Uniden sss 100.
cable between the 891 face and body isn't Cat5, it's RJ12 6P6C
RJ12 is a connector, not a cable
@@HamRadio2 true, but a cat 5 cable is 8 twisted pairs with RJ45 connector, the RJ12 connector is 6, i think, but could be wrong. CAT5 is used for the microphone though
Best Budget: FT-891
Best Newbie: FT-710
Best QRP: KX3
Best SOTA: KX2
Best POTA: FT-891
Best 1RX: FTDX10
Best 2RX: K4, FTDX101
Disagree with Best POTA, but that list is pretty good.
Love these "Best" videos. Proposal: "Best APRS" Ham radio.
Great idea
Can I get the YAESu FT710 with just a technician license.
U don’t need a license to purchase… just to transmit!
I needs to put the 7300 in a 706/7000 sized box.
Excellent overview of best HF Radios Jason ! Will definitely help out new General's and Extra's.
Thanks for watching
As much as I love my Yaesu handhelds, my FT-991A went back in it's box pretty quickly. I replaced it with the Icom 9700 to sit next to my 7300 to cover all my HF/VHF/UHF needs and never looked back. The screen on the Yaesu doesn't come close to the Icom and honestly, whoever designed the menu system on the Yaesu should be arrested for crimes against humanity.
NO problems using my 991a maybe you can’t read a manual…
891 has the sound recorder also.
Yes
But doesn’t have an auto repeat function.
@truckinguy92 I'm honestly not sure. I don't know how to work the function. I just seen a video from kb9vbr. He had it setup through quick buttons
Hands Down, the Xiegu G90! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Too bad our American manufacturers can’t learn a damn thing from Xiegu and make a 100-120 watt version of this rig!
7100 beats the 991a, but really any of the radios presented here are good enough
Yes but everything mentioned in this video is much higher quality than those radios
@@HamRadio2agreed, they’re nothing more than over glorified CB radios. If they’re tuned properly they’re OK radios. The big problem is they’re usually turned into overmodulated splatter boxes by unscrupulous CB shops.
Why are you yelling????
You forgot to mention in the US Technician licensees have HF CW privileges.
No I didn't
And DStar HF
The 7300 is the easiest to set up for remote operation with RS-BA1, RCForb, etc. No additional device needed to put it on your network.
No additional device except a computer
WD4OBP hi Andy bro
Tech's don't have HF rights anymore?
Only on 10M and CW on a couple of other bands
AMAZING how they can build a cell phone that does EVERYTHING but ham radios have to a al carte everything. There is no reason why they can't make a say 50 or 100 watt all mode HF with 2meters 220 440 as well as CB, FM radio and smash in a Uniden SDS 100 scanner. Please tell me why this is not possible and if you have a good answer I will be shocked. These companies just want to keep punching out niche radios to sell more product. Hell by this time almost 2025 it should all be in a mobile or hand held radio sub 1k.
Icom 7300. I hope I saved someone 20 minutes
Seems like you missed part of the video
Technicians have privileges on 28.000-28.500
28.3-28.5 for SSB
Too bad the icom ic-7100 is expensive, I am grateful I have a ft-817 that's geared to be portable a hardcore CW guy gifted me I wouldn't mind having 4 more of them so I can run it in my truck, car, home and, travel trailer.

Thanks for sharing. I nearly bought one of them, but for the same price but a extra 100w the ts480hx 200w cuts through pile ups is a winner. I would buy it again and again. 73 zl3xdj
