Yeah, during Covid he made a really good step by step series for a variety of things. Definitely his stuff is good to watch for when you are learning. I recently did the folded axe (though that video I think is just a supplemental for a bigger lesson, so is missing some info like the total length which I just guestimated based on the target weight I was aiming for).
I have attempted a couple corkscrews quite some time ago and wasn't happy with the results. This video makes me think about it a different way, thanks!
Completely agree, far too many mediocre smiths out there getting more views due to either better video skills/editing or some gimic. I watch you and only a couple of others due to the no BS and to the point, also highly skilled and a true love for the craft not the fame or likes. I'm going to make me a V block as I need a V shape wood working chisel for the morsit and tendents joints I have a very old one about 1" but could enjoy having a small 3/8 inch for small work. I watch TH-cam videos all the time and I make and sell knifes, damascus billets, and a few hammers along with various other forges items. I watch videos because I find it entertaining and there’s always something new to learn.
I think the entertainment aspect cannot be overlooked. Even I want to be entertained more than anything else when I'm surfing TH-cam. But not every channel is my cup of tea, that all.

@@zumbazumba1 I think you were correct. Anything you use as an avil is an anvil. The picture what we all have in our heads is a fairly recent (as far as blacksmithing goes) invention.
My small blocks style anvils are my own designs which I had made here in Taiwan. They are made form 4145 steel and completely heat treated. I paid around $450 but it depends on which style. Thanks for watching.
I made a corkscrew in the style Mark used in his video. It was challenging and fun. I like the lines on yours as well. As fort he cleavage, it's an attention getter, clickbait thing. I enjoy the fun of smithing from everyone.

Haha i think your anvils are sexy m8 if it helps :-) PS if you forge one mandrel the correct dimensions you can just hold the straight length of tapered bar at the bottom and wrap the cork screw with zero hammering in one heat , you can make then in half the time that way , i have made a LOT and that is the fastest way.PPS could have turned the tail in to a bottle opener .

As a woman Blacksmith, I strongly dislike that channel as well. The reason being, it is not skill on primary display If you get my meaning. pretty sure I know which channel is in question and she has been demonitized I totally agree women should not use their bodies in such a way when it causes really hard working smiths that are amazing at their trade go completely unnoticed because of channels like that. its sad its upsetting and downright degrading for both channels
I honestly don't think that channel should be de-monetized just for showing skin. A whole lot of people out there are doing the same on TH-cam. I was just surprised that overt sexuality made it to blacksmithing - that's all. So in a way, I regret even bringing this up. It's an unfair advantage because not all smiths are thin and muscular. What surprises me is how many men flock to her even though she's gay. Most are 13 year old boys
I think I know the female smith you mention, yes her looks get her a lot of attention, But Fay is a real blacksmith/artisan and works really hard at the craft, she also gets a ton of crap from people and youtube because she happens to be a female and refuses to hide like being a female blacksmith is something to be ashamed of.
Rachel David, Monica Coyne, Lorelai Sims, and Kaitlin (from Ouroboros Armory) are 4 women smiths I can name off the top of my head who do great work and I am pretty sure they aren't ashamed of being women smiths. Lorelai has written a book, Monica and Rachel show of their skills a lot in the Rocky Mountain Smith, and Kaitlin does some really friggen cool stuff. She even collaborated with Black Bear Forge.
I think the issue is that the thumbnails for the vids are often (I don't follow, but they show up in my feed) as cleavage shots. The one video I did watch had a cleavage thumb, but the video was a pretty straightforward blacksmith/making video (no cleavage). I generally object to click bait, but do what you want. Said that Mark is the real deal. I have all three of his books and eagerly watch for the forth (yah big tease)
@@gunterhausfrau without a doubt Fay is smart enough to use her feminine looks and "natural assets" in her marketing. While it attracts some it makes others write her off as a faker or model... While it is true she isn't the best blacksmith she works hard at it and sells some of her work... as for this Mark Aspry fellow, I have just seen a few of his vids as I just found his channel. He seems like a good blacksmith, But his channel seems to lack marketing appeal other than blacksmithing which is a very niche group with lots of competition and very little marketing on youtube. so it shouldn't be surprising that a chanal with border appeal has a larger following.

But speaking from only very limited information, as I mentioned hers (and a lot of youtube/internet) looks to be click bait driven, to me, and this is my opinion not necessarily shared, we all have our tastes, click bait seems dishonest. Want to make or watch cleavage blacksmithing, Great! do it (I may or may not join you) but if the thumb is cleavage and the video isn't then seems dishonest (vise versa, if Marks videos showed a black and white thumb of the project and there was a thong wearing person posing around the shop not blacksmithing... dishonest...confusing.. but dishonest)

I probably shouldn't have referred to the channel as Beaver Cleavage. I was surprised to see blatant sexuality on a blacksmithing channel. But at the end of the day, to each his own. Just not my thing... Thanks.

I totally agree women should not use their bodies in such a way when it causes really hard working smiths that are amazing at their trade go completely unnoticed because of channels like that. its sad its upsetting and downright degrading for both channels
I honestly don't think that channel should be de-monetized just for showing skin. A whole lot of people out there are doing the same on TH-cam. I was just surprised that overt sexuality made it to blacksmithing - that's all. So in a way, I regret even bringing this up. I doubt that channel was de-monetized or if it was, maybe it was over some other issue. To each his own. Thanks for watching.
@@gstongs I agree it is surprising but I stand by TH-cam's decision. It would be no different if a man stood there without a shirt showing off his muscles hoping it would attract the ladies. It's an unfair advantage because not all smiths are thin and muscular. What surprises me is how many men flock to her even though she's gay. Most are 13 year old boys
I think I know the female smith you mention, yes her looks get her a lot of attention, But Fay is a real blacksmith/artisan and works really hard at the craft, she also gets a ton of crap from people and youtube because she happens to be a female and refuses to hide like being a female blacksmith is something to be ashamed of.
Rachel David, Monica Coyne, Lorelai Sims, and Kaitlin (from Ouroboros Armory) are 4 women smiths I can name off the top of my head who do great work and I am pretty sure they aren't ashamed of being women smiths. Lorelai has written a book, Monica and Rachel show of their skills a lot in the Rocky Mountain Smith, and Kaitlin does some really friggen cool stuff. She even collaborated with Black Bear Forge.
I think the issue is that the thumbnails for the vids are often (I don't follow, but they show up in my feed) as cleavage shots. The one video I did watch had a cleavage thumb, but the video was a pretty straightforward blacksmith/making video (no cleavage). I generally object to click bait, but do what you want. Said that Mark is the real deal. I have all three of his books and eagerly watch for the forth (yah big tease)
@@gunterhausfrau without a doubt Fay is smart enough to use her feminine looks and "natural assets" in her marketing. While it attracts some it makes others write her off as a faker or model... While it is true she isn't the best blacksmith she works hard at it and sells some of her work...
as for this Mark Aspry fellow, I have just seen a few of his vids as I just found his channel. He seems like a good blacksmith, But his channel seems to lack marketing appeal other than blacksmithing which is a very niche group with lots of competition and very little marketing on youtube. so it shouldn't be surprising that a chanal with border appeal has a larger following.
@@karm65 I don't disagree at all. I think they are going after two different audiences. But speaking from only very limited information, as I mentioned hers (and a lot of youtube/internet) looks to be click bait driven, to me, and this is my opinion not necessarily shared, we all have our tastes, click bait seems dishonest. Want to make or watch cleavage blacksmithing, Great! do it (I may or may not join you) but if the thumb is cleavage and the video isn't then seems dishonest (vise versa, if Marks videos showed a black and white thumb of the project and there was a thong wearing person posing around the shop not blacksmithing... dishonest...confusing.. but dishonest)
I don't completely agree but I appreciate your measured comment. I know women who are widely respected metal smiths who never resorted to using their sexuality to gain an audience. But to each his own. Thanks.
