Bill if you want to see if the old thermostat is shot you can put it in a small can with water then use your torch to warm up the water. Put a thermometer in the water and start heating the water to the temperature with the torch. See if it opens and closes at the right temperature. Good for another video.
On modern engines,PLEASE do avoid any silicone,rtv type gasket dressing/makers as it will harm,and mess with most sensors..Hylomar by Permatex,or Hondabond,Yamabond is safest with less chance of sensor ruin,or clogs....
How did you get the heater tubes off? I got all the bolts to the housing off but I can't get it out because it's stuck on the black tube. How you get that out/off
G'day Bill. mate you are lucky. In Australia this engine is in a RWD. and took me around 6 hours to change the thermostat as it is pretty much against the firewall. I feel ya pain bloke its a really bad design.
Crikey that is in a crappy place, those heater pipes don't look too good at the welds to the plate that bolts to the thermostat housing? Kinda happy that my Astra's a 4-pot and the stat's right at the front after seeing that, even though the bottom bolt for it is completely hidden from view and I had to just feel around for it.
Many people say Dexcool should be replaced with conventional green coolant, but good or bad, GM recommends Dex for their Engines. so, I know their are alternative Dex type coolants out there, these alternative coolants are comparable to Dex, but not hazardous to your cooling system. I added coolant to top off my reservoir, I purchased it from Advanced Auto, it is their brand, it is 100% compatible with Dex. I want to flush out my system, but I want to replace the coolant that belongs there, what is the name of the alternative coolant that works like Dex?
No mention of what type of engine he is working on. Too many posters show us how to do some repair and fail to mention the year and type of engine they;re working on.
good luck . I did water pump this fall on combine up in air on planks and ladders. and then we had to get 700 pound rad out . loader only goes so far up. planks get slippery with coolant. why are thouse jobs on newer stuff so complicated

Changed a few thermostats in my day and I have to say I've never seen one placed quite that badly... good job GM!
while you are there bill, I'd do a performance cleanup. Clean the Throttle body etc. did wonders on my van.
i agree with the dex cool comments. here in the USA we call dex coool DEX KILL. It clogs the cooling system

I would have takin one look at that and went yup garage can so this one! That looks like more then just a knuckle buster skin flesh ect .
On all vehicles the top radiator hose run to the thermostat.
