Got to briefly meet Lu after PIL played in Pittsburgh several years back. Super cool guy and told me all about his Turkish guitar! Knew he was in the Damned and The Mekons but had no idea the incredible extent of his travels. Very inspiring...so many thanks for posting this. Well done!!
Some time between 79 & 81, Lu turned up to play with various bands in a local (to me) nightclub, I must have seen him 5 or more times, & always had a drink & chat with him. I realised after the 2nd gig, that he was a great player, able to play many styles. In the early 90's, I was on the PA crew for a Shriekback gig & when I helped the band get the gear in, I spotted Lu, after we were done with the gear, I re intoduced myself. Lu didn't recognise me, but when I told him where we'd met, he remembered me. After the gig, Lu had a few hours to kill before getting a train, so I invited him to come to my bedsit for a smoke, so he did, with an entourage of local ladies. When we got to my place Lu produced a bottle of Whiskey, which it seemed that the 2 of us drank most of it. My last memory of the day, I was drifting off to sleep, so Lu played me some lullabies on one of his non guitar instruments, then disappeared into the night with the young ladies in tow.
I love that this channel will cover all the drugs, debauchery and crime of the music industry, but also make time to document the life of someone who mainly just seems to travel around making amazing music with friends from all over the globe, and make it just as interesting.
Bravo! Lu is an incredibly talented all around musician. Tome, you keep coming with these awesome, off the beaten path subjects and people. I am in awe of your abilities. 🎉🎉
Watched this twice, probably going to again, because I’ve looked literally a few years for a video on this guy, because he and John McGeoch are two of my favorite musicians ever. To find something this in depth after years, though, I’m having to pick my jaw up off the floor, man. Thank you for sharing this. This guy’s playing is always different, goes beyond a love of punk rock for me. Truly. I mean that with immense gratitude, tome. Thanks, man!
That was unexpectedly fascinating. Thanks for making it. He's been lurking in the background all these years and it turns out he's a really interesting and obviously very intelligent guy. All that travelling and investing time filling his mind. Well played.
I've always greatly admired Lu for his musicianship and also his fashion sense, but knew very little of his background. Imagine my delight at finding this documentary tonight. A truly fascinating human being; thank you so much for making this.
Brilliant video, about a fascinating Guy I knew nothing about. Bet I'm not alone, so well done Tome for educating us all. It's quite obvious you have excellent musical tastes. I now need to follow up on Lu and see what I've been missing apart from the PIL content. Cheers
I met Lu in the street in Brighton when PIL were playing in town. He was very amiable and nice. He’s a great player and plays in a unique and recognisable way. PIL are great with this line-up, and the Oud thing he uses works well.
Rob actually got the name "Lu" because when he auditioned for The Damned he plugged in his guitar and the singer walked over to his amp, turned the volume up full blast to blistering feedback levels so he ended up jumping around, playing like he was being electrocuted with a thousand volts. He got the job (and earned himself a nickname, short for Lunatic) They liked him.
Nice video! Met Lu briefly before a PiL gig in Dallas-chatted about his work with Triaboliques & his travels in China-really nice guy, and a great & versatile guitar player!
Great to see Lu get some attention and love, he was a perfect compliment to McGeoch in Pil and its only his lack of ego that keeps people from recognising him as a similar talent and influence. He's also a nice guy. Cheers Lu!
I read somewhere a,long time ago that Lu carried a hammer with him when he was with the Damned. He carried it in his guitar case and would shout "Where's me hammer?" causing the band to run away because evidently Lu destroyed stuff with this hammer. Captain Sensible said he was a lunatic...can you imagine that?
I'm sure he also played with Lol Coxhill too. Tho they both played on the Damned's 'Music for Pleasure' album. I've got the Lol Coxhill documentary 'Frogdance' and I'm sure Lu is playing live with him.
Tome you are the best fucking channel on this website I swear to God. TRULY the only channel I will drop everything to check out. You should do an episode on Rob Graves maybe [RIP]
I knew absolutely nothing about him other than interviews with Lydon and the modern era P.I.L. in Mojo Magazine since I've only listened to the Jah Wobble/Levene era. Certainly a busy and talented man. I didn't know he was in the Waterboys' Whole Of The Moon video. I'll have to watch it and look for him. I've only paid attention to the late Karl Wallinger's performance. I had the 'Hit Video USA' music channel on cable in 1985 and believe me, they were playing that video every hour.
Maximum respect for Lu Edmonds. I am greatly influenced by Eastern, Roma and African music: i play oud, sitar, bouzouki, Chaabi mandole, Flamenco guitar, bass, as well as a quartertone guitar, and, of course the whole panoply of conventional six and four-strings. I always love Western musicians who push the boundaries. Besides, if you wanna know the future of guitar music, you gotta go beyond the West. Lu is a perfect example of this. May he create amazing music for many more long years to come...and needless to say, I'd love to play and jam and share music ideas with the man...
Nice video, you've done great research here, Lu Edmonds is undoubtedly an interesting man. From these clips, hes gone through his life in an interesting way with great skill - maybe for tax reasons? That said, I have to admit that I’ve never been able to connect with PIL's music. It feels a skilled band trying to hold things together, behind what sounds some random bloke chaotically shouting. While John Lydon is an intelligent individual , his musical abilities are those of a potato.
Efin Lydon is always out of tune, but he's got a good ear for musicians. Even Ginger Baker played with him, i can imagine the clash of personalities....
Lu was far too competent a guitar player for the Damned, punk always worked better with bog standard players like Sensible and James doing their barre chords. Lu was much better suited to PiL who were more musical and ground breaking than 3 chords.

Cool guy,all about his passion. I bet he could get big bucks as a session player. But he does what he likes, he play!
Congratulations on one of the best documentaries on a musician ever. And not one BLEEPING talking head!!! Thank you.
Thank you! Lu is one of the all time greats. I feel like he doesn’t get as much attention as he deserves.

HOT DAMN this was so well done. The edits, song selection, and closing sequence were chefs kiss. THANK YOU
I enjoyed it from Croatia. Great artist.

Lu is the definition of awesome!

Fashion sense? He dresses like a colorblind deranged dutch raver
Excellent document, I had no idea Lu had been so deeply involved in so many diverse projects, thanks for making this!
Thanks for that. I love finding out about other band members of artists I have listened to for years.

What a cool character! Been admirer for a long time but didn't know half of his achievements. Thanks for this.
Thank you for another great Video!

What an Interesting Cat, surprised I've never heard of him. Gave up on PIL when Levene left.
Thank you. Lu may be the worlds most interesting man.
I've met and recorded him a few times, and I must say I'd agree with you 💯
I read somewhere a,long time ago that Lu carried a hammer with him when he was with the Damned.

Captain Sensible said he was a lunatic...can you imagine that?
I think that was Algy Ward.
@hammerhead222
Yep, you are right. I stand corrected 👍
Just saw an old PIL performance 2 days ago, always wondered what that guy was about.
Never heard of him awesome stuff good job mate 👍
Wow what a great documentary I grew up watching these bands & musical talents in the UK…
Hey that’s cool that’s him playing in that waterboys song. I always liked whole of the moon
Big fan of Lu's and the bands he's worked with including Shriekback Great bloke
Fanx for that documentary, I like PIL and now this man I never heard about.
Imagine an alternate reality where Lu Edmonds and John McGeoch are in the same band. Wait a minute!
Nice work !!
Beautiful......thank you..x
Wow amazing video about an even more amazing artist
Never heard of Lu before even though I like PIL, damned etc - fantastic. And what a force PIL were/are live.
Great stuff! Interesting guy who I wasn't aware of. Thanks.
Lu is amazing. Love PiL
You’re incredible. Subbed.
He was in a great band called the edge in 1978 79 , Jon moss was on drums , they should have had more success .
What a remarkable man & muscian . I had no idea
I'm sure he also played with Lol Coxhill too.
Tho they both played on the Damned's 'Music for Pleasure' album.
I've got the Lol Coxhill documentary 'Frogdance' and I'm sure Lu is playing live with him.
John Lydon is a clown. At least he dresses the part
Went to see PiL, great gig at Leeds, I loved him from the 2nd album MFP, The Damned.
What a career!
Now theres someone whos lived but most importantly contributed to LIFE !
Tome you are the best fucking channel on this website I swear to God.
TRULY the only channel I will drop everything to check out.

The Wobble /Levone erra is the only essential PiL music. The rest is mostly cr@p
The geezer was a troubador.Great docu, kept me stuck to the screen.Interestin bloke.Travel, the great educator.
Living the dream❤️

He looked like Blixa Bargeld when younger and Warren Ellis when older
Hahahaha!!
Deadset does!!

Very cool man
Lu! A nice feller! I saw him with the Damned, just before they split the first time.
Obviously,he doesn't give a f..k for the fame. I respect his adventerous spirit. Thanx for this clip,i nearly lost him in my spectre
Extraordinary
I saw Lu and John McGeogh with PIL in 1987 when they opned for INXS in Fresno. ❤😂
Damn, this guy rules 👏
Efin Lydon is always out of tune, but he's got a good ear for musicians. Even Ginger Baker played with him, i can imagine the clash of personalities....
nah, it's you thats out of tune.
@@deepzeliade-dk8uo i know i am. But i keep quiet
Lydon can live in LA another century, but he will ever sound like low class Londoner. Even he's Irish (like half of the UK)😮
Lu was far too competent a guitar player for the Damned, punk always worked better with bog standard players like Sensible and James doing their barre chords. Lu was much better suited to PiL who were more musical and ground breaking than 3 chords.
Wodda bird!
what a musical journey that is, looking forward to seeing him play again with PiL at Boiler Shop in Newcastle, on 30th May this year.
Catweazle
musik is great! as well! lol
Paganini reincarnated!!
Proper musician
Nice work!
