I remember first hearing cream as a kid. And the only thing that was on my mind was who the hell is the drummer ? He had a unique sound I had never heard before.
Ran into this guy in ~1988, doing a drum clinic in a packed South Florida high school auditorium full of every employee of every music store. Somebody asked after a brilliant display, “Who got you into doubles?” Ginger replied angrily, “Nobody got me into doubles. I got myself OUT of doubles.“ He meant double bass drums.
So many comments about what a horrible person he was.......we all are in some ways, our lives just aren't public record. Ginger went through life as the same lost kid that lost his Dad at a very early age.....looking for a substitute he never found..... What a great drummer, God rest his soul
And nobody cares about anything he ever did outside of Cream. Clapton and Bruce were great musicians, Baker was a lot like Keith Moon except he had little work ethic and far less talent. Ask any of the great rock bands between 1967 and 1975 and none would call Baker anything better than an average drummer.
@@steveludwig4200Baker was much better than Moon. There’s no comparison. Baker could play with just about anyone and any style of music. Moon couldn’t.
Nice job, GB moved out here to Parker, Co. and started a Polo Club. Immigration kicked him out for his comments on a shock-jock Classic FM station. Met him with Ron Miles, Jerry Hahn, and Beju-Bassest at the Parker's Day Fair or the "Falling Off the Roof" Band. Ron Miles told me he would take my LP to him to sign as he said he might go off. It hangs proudly in my LP room. It was very cool to have him in town and playing around Denver occasionally. Regards, Bob, Denver, Co
I saw Johnny Rotten live with PIL in 1978. He was phenomenal. Vocals all on key, very high range, a total original. Ginger played on the 1986 PIL Album, he really liked John.
Lydon had talent but the comparison isn’t accurate because Lydon’s a-hole behavior is an act while Baker was a veritable a-hole and Baker was an alcoholic and drug addict while Lydon just liked to smoke a lot of weed.
Jerry Lee Lewis and Ginger Baker were my two role models since I was 10 years old, when I got my first drum set. Perhaps you have to be a little crazy to play drums like Ginger Baker
Jerry Lee Lewis was your role model? By the time Baker was well known everyone already knew that Lewis married his 13 year old cousin when he was 22. Disgusting.
I never regarded Baker as a great drummer. He seemed to not get along with other musicians and had a hateful relationship with lots of his band mates. It was probably not fun to be in a band with a very strong opinionated heroin addict. He thought he was a god but was an overplaying junkie.
For a long time in Italy 1950's - 80's....in places like Sicily, Tuscany, Rome, Milan, Lumbardo, Umbria, many businesses and little towns were "privately corporately" regulated.. even farming...If you didn't get their permission, you'd get one warning...like your tractor or barn burns up...Thats the first and usually the only warning you'd get...."La Cortesia."
I will always prefer Bonham over Ginger. I have always tried to like Ginger, his drumming and such but his decades long ill will toward Bonham's popularity plus Ginger's anger toward everyone just turned me off.
Beware of Mr.Baker (2012) Is a GREAT documentary on the life and times of Ginger Baker. IMHO: Ginger Baker is the greatest rock drummer to ever pick up a pair of drumsticks. Most people say that Neil Peart from RUSH is the best rock drummer to ever play. IMHO: Ginger would drum circles around Neil Peart.
He so reminds me of Johnny Rotten.Or rather, Johnny Rotten so reminds me of him. Incredible drummer, but boy, he must have been hard work to be around. Relentlessly ALWAYS right! ahahahaha
I imagine Lydon was on his best behavior when Ginger worked with PIL, Ginger was a prototype of Rotten 10 years before punk and in the midst of the flower power era.
Baker was the drummer on PiL's Flowers of Romance though contractual conflicts made it impossible to credit Baker on the album. Lydon was really impressed by his drumming. Flowers of Romance was a very sparse drum-centric album.
Lydon’s a-hole behavior is an act. He’s actually pretty chill and he just used to smoke a lot of weed. Baker was a good drummer but he was a drunken and drugged out a-hole.
I like his drumming, not the best in the world, but really good. As time goes on, there is better and better. So what! I can play what he did, and I’m old/er.. fuck off! World is fucked up!!!
Oh bollocks. I think you're right. I got lulled and beguiled by the clipped 1970's tones and thought I recognised the voice and gave it an automatic pass based on that. What a disappointment.
Daniel Day-Lewis has to come out of retirement and play this guy 🤪
YES!
One hundred percent
Find anything about that. Tell us more.
Dude you are right. He has the looks and the abilities.
Baker is a demonstrable psychopath...should have been a classic British gangster...that's more suited to his personality for sure.
Baker was a angry bully.
Talk about a game changer. Complete and total rebellion against all style of previous percussion. Stunning.
I remember first hearing cream as a kid. And the only thing that was on my mind was who the hell is the drummer ? He had a unique sound I had never heard before.
Ginger Baker's nan lived 2 doors from us in Devon. He used to visit. She was a cow. He was a cow. Bless them.

3:28 When Baker craps out on his drums his bandmates hardly notice....it probably sounded like a usual soundcheck to them 😂

I think he was undiagnosed on the autistic spectrum. Fantastic Musician.
He was meaner than the average person.
Mafia stuff starts at 5:27
a los angeles collector told me he had gingers gold or platinum records...'he sold them to get drug money'.
cool story brwh
Brilliant drummer. Everything else, not so much
No mention of the Graham Bond Organization which included both Ginger and Jack Bruce before they formed Cream.
Because nobody cares about that.
@@ceedogg4270It’s hard to care about something you don’t know about
No wonder the mafia was suspicious. Vito Corleone was ostensibly in the olive oil business, too.
He was arrogant
These videos about baker never mention he was in hawkwind and played on their album levitation.

i preferred his work with harold in " steptoe and son "
It's amazing that Rik and Ade didn't get sued by their production company. I'm not having a pop, they were both great in their day..

Wish we had a book about this Era in his life
Ginger had talent, Rotton has no talent or style, hes got one album and a ego for 50 people, very unfair comparison
Very tru, and Ginger was scary... rotten is a laugh.

2024 saw Kofi Baker show. He shares several stories about the craziness of growing up in Ginger’s household
Jerry Lee Lewis and Ginger Baker were my two role models since I was 10 years old, when I got my first drum set. Perhaps you have to be a little crazy to play drums like Ginger Baker

@@ceedogg4270 I read it a second time hoping it was Jerry Lewis and his telethon.
I read the title and thought to myself, "Of course he did."
Can you say loose cannon?

Always thought Mitch Mitchell was twice the drummer Ginger was.
Ginger " I'll put you in fookin' ospital!" Baker...
An over-rated goof.
LEGEND!!!✊
The one man who makes Keith Richards look healthy. As i hear it less than a dozen Cream concerts did NOT end in a fist fight with Jack Bruce
Anyone else think the thumbnail was Buzz Aldrin?
Love his drumming but in the words of the Drum God Buddy Rich " This guy, this guy...not my kinda guy "
I will always prefer Bonham over Ginger.
I have always tried to like Ginger, his drumming and such but his decades long ill will toward Bonham's popularity plus Ginger's anger toward everyone just turned me off.
Baker like many drummers in the 60s was influenced by jazz while Bonham was ham-fisted and couldn’t play a swing shuffle even half as good as Baker.
Great Drummer. Horrible human.
His life was a dumpster fire....and he was responsible for it. Brilliant drummer, but really not a nice person.
Right hes going to take on the Mafia good luck ..
