Not many know that barely three weeks before Cliffy’s epic and brave victory in this Sydney to Melbourne 875km race, he decimated the field in the 1983 Australian 100 Mile Race on a soggy grass oval at Manly on Easter Saturday night, through constant rain. For most of the race he ran without a shirt or shoes. He successfully defended his Title from the previous year in just over 14 hours. Two years later in 1985 he won the Australian Sri Chinmoy 24 Hour Track Race in Adelaide, on a black cinders track in 35 degrees heat with a world class 235km at 63 years of age.🙏
Cliff Young is a national treasure for his marvelous achievement and his modesty. However today most young people in Australia have never heard of Cliff which is so bloody sad. I was a teenager in 1983 when he shuffled all the way from Sydney to Melbourne and I still think to this day it was the greatest individual sporting feat I have ever seen. RIP CLIFFY.
I was looking for some sort of documentary after hearing about this for the first time. Quite surprising consider I flood my mind with positive stuff all of the time. Thanks for posting
My mate Liam runs from Clapham to Hampstead Heath, round it, and back and he is no spring chicken. I thought that was impressive until I saw this. Absolutely brilliant.
