  • A breathtaking Rio Celeste waterfall in Costa Rica. A hiking guide! A stunning Rio Celeste Waterfall in Costa Rica.
The Tenorio Volcano National Park / Rio Celeste entrance fee for adults is $12 for adults. The park hours are every day from 8 am to 4 pm but you must enter before 2 pm. Only 400 people are allowed on the trail at one time so it's better to come early.
The first section of the trail from the entrance to the waterfall is on a very nice and flat trail. It is mostly dirt but goes from concrete to dirt a few times and through one suspension bridge. The hike from the entrance to Rio Celeste Waterfall takes around 30-45 minutes depending on your fitness level.
Once you reach the waterfall entrance, there is a set of steep stairs with handrails to go down to the waterfall.
Celeste River in Costa Rica is a bright blue river, formed by 2 rivers merging together. One river has high acidity due to volcanic activity and the other river carries significant quantities of a type of mineral aluminosilicate, that is responsible for reflecting the blue color. When these 2 rivers mix to form the Rio Celeste, the aluminosilicate particles enlarge giving the river a strong turquoise color.
After walking through two very small creeks and the rest of the trail, you’ll come to an area with a couple large signs and the stairway arch to the waterfall. To go down to the waterfall you’ll have to descend a set of steep stairs but don’t worry, there are handrails.
There are some great spots on the stairs to take very nice photos of the stairs and waterfall.
Next you will walk across a couple hanging bridges that give great views of the river. To witness the turquoise blue of the waters next to the rich, lush green of the rainforest is a magical experience.
Finally, at the end of the Rio Celeste waterfall hike you’ll see where the 2 rivers meet and where the blue starts to become blue. This part was amazing, and I’m always blown away to think about how amazing our world is and all the magical things that Mother Nature can do.

This is a beautiful waterfall! I love the bright blue color of the water. It is worth climbing all those steep stairs to see such beautiful views. The boiling water section and the section where the two rivers meet creating that beautiful color were fascinating to see as well. Thanks for sharing your travels with us!

Thank you so much my friend. Yes, its totally worth driving from La Fortuna on some dirt road and then climbing those steps to view this amazing waterfall, thermal springs, merging of two rivers. Nature at its best. If you go morning around 8am before the crowd starts coming, you will feel you are somewhere on the paradise. Thanks for watching.

    Can you swim there?

Thanks for watching my friend. Unfortunately, No. You can't swim there. You can swim in the river outside the park. Dive past the park entrance and you will pass a bridge that crosses Rio Celeste. You can park your car here and swim. Hope this helps. Have a great day.
