  • The 2025 BMW X3 M50 is equipped with a more potent inline-six engine, replacing the previous X3 M40i. It features an exclusive grille design and quad exhaust.
Traditionally, BMW reserved the M Performance version for later in a model’s lifecycle, but with the arrival of the fourth-generation X3 (G45), the M50 debuts from day one. Unlike its predecessor, the M40i, the new M50 badge signifies an increase in power output. Despite industry trends favoring engine downsizing, the X3 M50 retains its turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine, now augmented with mild-hybrid technology. This setup results in a combined output of 393 hp and 428 lb-ft (580 Nm), with the combustion engine contributing 375 hp and 398 lb-ft (540 Nm), while the starter generator adds 17 hp and 147 lb-ft (200 Nm).
Compared to the retired X3 M40i, which offered 355 hp and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) in Europe, the new X3 M50 represents a substantial upgrade with 38 hp and 59 lb-ft (80 Nm) more. It also surpasses its predecessor in the United States by 11 hp and 59 lb-ft (80 Nm). Notably, these power figures remain consistent across both regions, a departure from BMW’s recent models adapted to stricter European emissions standards.
Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, the X3 M50 accelerates from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 4.6 seconds, outperforming its predecessor by 0.3 seconds. In the US, it achieves 0-60 mph (96 km/h) in 4.4 seconds, maintaining the acceleration capabilities of its predecessor. Its top speed remains electronically limited to 155 mph (250 km/h).
As the only six-cylinder X3 variant and the sole M Performance model, the X3 M50 incorporates BMW's most powerful inline-six engine yet, optimized with enhancements like a Miller cycle, upgraded injection system, revised crankshaft, and a quad-pipe exhaust system.
Visually, the X3 M50 distinguishes itself with a more aggressive grille design featuring horizontal slats and larger air intakes. Standard 20-inch alloy wheels (upgradeable to 21- or 22-inch) complement its sporty demeanor. Inside, it boasts a flat-bottomed steering wheel, Veganza and Alcantara sports seats, and prominent M branding throughout.
Production of the 2025 BMW X3 M50 begins in September 2024 at Spartanburg, with market availability slated for the fourth quarter of 2024. Priced at $64,100 in the US (plus $1,175 destination and handling fees), it represents a $2,380 premium over its predecessor, affirming its status as a premium M Performance SUV catering to enthusiasts worldwide.
