@@davidbowiejr1218 Its a comedy. The main character is indentured to a group of emotional pirates until his 20th birthday. These pirates refuse to steal from orphans. Word about this gets out and now everyone lies to the pirates and tells them that they are orphans. Anyway main characters 20th comes around and he goes off on his own to atone for being a pirate. He runs across a group of women (the major generals daughters) and attempts to woo them. Only one of them actually like him. Now the pirates show up and want to take the rest of the daughters. Their father, the general, shows up to save his daughters from the pirates and lies to them saying he's an orphan. The pirates leave them alone. While sulking in their lair, the pirate king discovers that the main character was born on leap day. Since leap day only happens every four years, he has only actually had 5 birthdays instead of 20. The pirate king goes back to claim the main character. The main character, now a pirate again, feels guilty because he knows the general is not an orphan, but does not want to give away his new girl's father to the pirates. Out of a sense of duty he eventually tells the pirates. The pirates then try to get revenge and attack the daughters and generals. A huge finale with song and dance happens. Turns out the pirates are all ex-nobles who have gone astray. The general promises all his daughters to the pirates if they promise to go back to legislative duties and give up piracy. The end. Everyone's happy. I know this answer is super late and super long but I hope it is suffice.

And most people don't tend to really train fast talking or singing unless it's for a possible job or as a hobby - and a lot of people aren't really interested in that. Though once you get used to it, you're absolutely right, the hard part is over, outside of memorizing the lyrics. But that's an entirely different discussion :P

They were writing a satire of Education, not promoting it. Just listen to the Lyrics of the whole song. Here is a "Modern" Major General, who knows many useless facts such as writing in cuneiform and the scientific names of microbes, while he barely knows more about tactics than a nun and his military knowledge is outdated by almost a century. Its mocking the fact that Major Generals are being more and more academic and scholarly and are hardly fit to command an army at all.

Played this in the pit orchestra last night. Before we played the encore, I put down my instrument, folded my hands and prayed. The brass players were practically triple tonguing and I swear the string players had their fingers tied up in cute little bows on the fingerboards and that their bow hairs had skid marks, lol. I didn't think it was humanly possible to sing that fast. The guy playing the Major General ended three bars before we did. Was his mouth even opening and closing, I wonder? Ha.

This was truly the role of George Rose's career. His story is one of the most tragic murder stories of the 80's.
The person this character was based off of was actually a very smart General, but was indeed made fun of because he had much more formal education than pretty much any other general. Regardless, this is a great song.

The general here is basically bragging about having elementary level education, being able to tell water is wet and having no idea how to do his job( his knowledge of strategy being at the level of the beginning of the century while this play takes place at the end of the century)

I saw the Pirates of Penzance while I was a student at the University Newcastle Upon Tyne in the 60s. Seeing such British Humour as " never sat a gee" and the appreciation/application of pytagoras theorem in songs in addition to rowing at Durham, and debating at Newcastle all this kept my time in England so exciting.

There are two versions using most of the cast (Kevin Kline, Linda Ronstadt, George Rose). One is a staged version that was available on VC tape, but which I have been unable to find on DVD. (If anyone knows where it is available, I'd like to know where to purchase one.) The other is the version filmed in NY at "Shakespeare in the Park". That version IS available on DVD and I recommend BOTH versions.
