  • This Optoma HD141x (vdhdnl) was sent in via my day job after the owner purchased a new lamp and still had the same results. After some troubleshooting via email, it was determined it was better sent in. It had the color wheel replaced last year but it was only running for a short erratic period and shut down. I refer to it in the video as a HD142x but that is incorrect.
    I had planned on changing the color wheel but remained skeptical that a 1yr old color wheel had failed. It turned out the color wheel sensor was encased in a weird dark dirt. The whole projector had what looked like smoke residue or exhaust residue everywhere. I have seen lots of types of dust inside of things but this was something unusual. I still don't quite know what it was but I suspect it was smoke of some sort mixed with dust.
    There were some other surprises like the speaker cabinet screw in the center and some missing screws. Luckily it was able to be saved and was returned a few days later.

    This is my bedroom projector, bar two new bulbs and the old clean out it's still going strong after 9 years.
    Still shows a good clean crisp picture with good colours.
    One of my better buys over the years.
    Top video Top channel Top bloke 👍

    That is a HD141X model. Definitely don't use those speaker /amplifier screws for the casing. Dirty light sensor is quite a common problem with these. Good piece of work again.

    Oh man these new 146X are a completely different chassis! Nice repair as always Frank, if this was mine I would bathe all the plastic parts in soapy hot water to make them brand new!!!! But..... I am insane I know..!!

      If it were mine, I'd probably have put all the plastic in the dishwasher and my wife would have laughed.

      I need to setup a laptop or tablet to use a monitor so I can see what I am doing. I try to follow the marks on my bench to stay in picture but I always slide out of frame.

    Looks like nicotine residue to me, the lamp white wires have turned a yellowish colour too. Glad you got the gloves on.

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was thinking that too. It's been a while but nicotine has a pretty distinct smell. This did not. I did have a mask on but I would have smelled it. I honestly suspect it was another kind of "smoke" mixed with dust. The Northern California type...
      Back in the 90s when I started my repair journey, we regularly had to deal with nicotine(Simple Green cleaner is great for it). I'm glad cigarette smoking is not as common as it used to be. That yellow slime it would make when you would clean it off was pretty unpleasant.
      The first shop I ever worked at was opened in the 1960s. At one point (around 98 or 99) we remodeled and I had to help clean the drop ceiling tile rails of 30ish years of nicotine build up. It was pretty foul.

      @@FixitFrank Luckily in the uk we don't have this problem. I suppose you would see different states having different air qualities, but nicotine is pretty disgusting stuff speaking as a non smoker. Cheers Frank, see you on the next one.

    there was an optoma hd28hdr on eBay for sale cheap. The lamp light was solid red and the power light was blinking red. Ive seen your video on a similar issue where a bad p-channel diode on the power supply was the issue. Do you think the projector I would like to get would have a similar fix? How often do you see this issue and how often are you able to fix this specific issue

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It might be. Without seeing it or you being able to check a few things I can't say 100%. It might be something more simple. I think that error is when the lamp door isn't closed. Sometimes people break off the tab that activates the door switch. You may want to download the manual and see what the LED errors point to. If its cheap enough, it could be a good score even if you need to put a lamp into it.

    I have an optoma hd146x that does not power up. No leds light by the control panel its completely dead. What could the problem be?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      hard to say without looking at it. It could be anything from a fuse to a bad mainboard. Power supply would be my first area to check. see if its getting voltages to the pfc circuit and the low voltage output. if its lacking voltage, then the mains fuse would be suspect but it could be a bunch of possible things.

    I have a hd141 and the power red light does not come on. The outlet works and I pulled all the cables the held down the power button to see if it reset. Some issue ot light come on HELP

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are not getting any LEDs are all, it sounds power supply related. Its hard to say exactly what but I would put your ear up close to the projector and slowly plug in the cord. You should hear like a little "tick" or "zip!" noise as the power supply charges up. If no noise, then power supply troubleshooting needs to happen.

    I guess the projector was used near a kitchen or commercial environment to deposit a greasy mess

    HD141x shows static image fine for a while, but shuts down when playing video after some time. When it shuts down I hear loud spinning sound (not the fan). Any comments? The colour wheel is clean and seems to spin smooth. bulb is new

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would be suspect of the index mark sticker on the color wheel. Especially if it sounds like its going to take off when it shuts down. that is a super common problem.

    • @BobbyPatelAuroville
      @BobbyPatelAuroville ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FixitFrank The index marker sticker is intact and I have also cleaned out the sensor board. Static images display well with full colour. Video plays for a while and fails randomly after some time. I believe if the video has less motion or fewer changes to display then it goes on a bit longer. Fast changing image makes it fail faster and then it goes out of control and shuts off. Problem, I am in South India and spares are hard to find...

      Ah, thank you for clarifying. From your description, I would suspect your DMD has bad heatsink paste. the paste has likely dried out and is no longer cooling the DMD properly. I would try cleaning the back of the DMD and the heatsink and replace the paste with new heat paste. I think that will help you.
