Great video. Very informative. It’s a bit overwhelming especially being a beginner to all of this and you did a fantastic job with staying on topic and explaining everything in a concise manner.
Sewell is a great company to deal with. I had bought the deadbolt style and decided I would rather have the 90° silverbacks, emailed them if I could do an exchange and they said no worries and don't worry about it two days later I had the 90 silverbacks in my hands. Used the deadbolts on my speakers and used the 90s on my receiver.
Personally, I prefer using spade connectors at the speaker ends, and banana plugs at the amp end. I find spade connectors to be more of a secure fit, but when fiddling around the congested back of an AVR or a 5+ channel amp, I succumb to the convenience banana plugs offer.
You have to have a heavy duty plug to use with spade connector. Mine tend to be loosen after a month or so. Because a spade is not flexible (mine is a 2mm thick), and screws use a thread natural slope to loose. So, the wider a screw is, the less that slope angle is, and the less loosing force is applied. But it's not guaranteed that a manufacturer uses a small step thread with a big speaker socket.
Great video! I've used the deadbolt and ocelot types and personally prefer the latter. The main problem I have with all banana plug designs, however, is over time they become loose and easily fall out of the amp,, speaker connector, etc.
I used Sewell banana plugs first then moved onto Amazon basics and it was only when I purchased non-false economy cables I thought I'd upgrade my banana plugs too. One thing I noticed almost immediately was how tight the fitting was. Unlike the previous mentioned banana plug. The latter needed two hands to install the Banana plugs. One to sturdy the speaker and one to actually do the pulling/pushing and unlike with the cheap ones, in and out with just a finger and thumb plus the sad thing is even the small finger and thumb is strong enough to pull/push it out of it's loose fitting. Buy once cry once.
@@jtjumpshot I’ve always wondered if I would be able to tell the difference in sound with that type of cable, probably not because my ears are pretty bad. I think it’s disgusting the amount of corners they’ll cut just to save a few cents, yet still charge premium prices for trash! I hate this disposable world we live in.
Hey Youthman, I recently purchased the Best Buy brand Rocketfish. These cables have a pin that stick right into the wire casing, so no stripping of the casing needed. This is my first experience using banana cables. My speakers are making static pops intermittently, now I'm thinking one of the connections is off even though I made sure each one was tight and secure. What are your thoughts? Did I buy crappy plugs?
Hello there , I have a Marantz SR7015 and I bought banana plugs 4mm from Nakamichi and it doesn’t fits on my AVR it’s too big . Do you know what size of banana plugs fits on my system ?
I made my own custom speaker cables with Sewell Silver Back banana plugs recently. I also aded a Y pants to cover the wire and also added heat shrink to cover the plugs and make it so the convection wasn't so floppy loose with just installing over the bare wire. Takes a long time (for a 7.4. 2 system) but looks great and alot cheaper than buying premade ones. I only ram into issues when trying to find the best plug for use with my on wall SVS Prime Elevations which have very little clearance between the speaker and the wall. With 12 gauge write the bend/routing coming out of the speaker is difficult for cleatance. I tried right angle ones (don't work on the Elevations) and other types. Not easy. What are others using for the Prime Elevations on their height on walls?
The right angle type banana plugs are super useful inside my Atmos boxes. Using Monoprice's equivelant of the Silverbacks, I actually like the personal assurance with the tightening of these screws. But I get why it can be irritating.
I had bad experience with deadbolt, so I end up using the doble screw with flex pin to banana plugs and never had a problem with connecting and disconnecting speakers again
8:28 I mean it's from person to person different, I have them and I watch this video because idk how to install them... I unscrewed the small 2 screws on 8 plug in under 2min :) I do a lot 3d printing, computer building etc, so I'm used to holding a screwdriver :D
Lol I just watched your older video on banana plugs this past weekend. I’m about to set up my theater for the first time was looking for some Youthman tips and tricks
I prefer whatever makes the most secure contact with the speaker wire, and for me, that's the dual set screw type. Yes, it's harder to install but super secure. The only thing better would be a soldered connection.
Another minor good thing about the 90 degree angle plugs is that the speaker wire conceals a teeny bit more easily when you have the back of a surround speaker (wife thinks ugly) facing into a visible room space because on stand at end of couch.
The one thing I never get from most people is how much white wired insulation do you strip back if you were going to put on "pants". Is there a rule of thumb?. And also do you still use heat shrink? Secondly, how much insulation do you cut off to install each type of banana plug?? I've seen some people cut off an inch, some people a quarter inch etc
Those are great questions. I have never used pants to create custom cables, so I’m not sure the exact length or what is recommended there. For the banana plugs, you just want to make sure you don’t have bare wire, extending on the outside.
Nice instruction video,I've been using sewell for years.Nice and simple and does the job well.Youthman just a reminder,Im still waiting for the full review on the Denon avr-x4800h,Stay well
I’m actually waiting to review it when the new MartinLogan system gets here. I only had three speakers from Definitive Technology with the Denon so it didn’t really have a full system to push.
Big fan of banana plugs, especially how easy it is to install them. Just need your correct lengths of speaker wire. Think I had gotten some from Media bridge.
I'm not a fan of the spring loaded clips in the speaker cup because the contact surface area is only a knife edge so defeats the purpose of using any wire greater than 18 guage ! In addition, I have never seen them with an insertion hole big enough for any wire greater than 18 g. Banana plugs suit all guages greater than 18. Before monster cable came on the market, I was using 12 guage 10 A 240 VAC mains multi-stranded wire.
I found out, the hard way, that banana plugs (most, if not all) do not fit in the "vintage" or "legacy" spring loaded speaker connections. You HAVE to use the pin type or bare wire. In all the videos of audio connectors I've seen, nobody mentions that.
In all fairness, I didn’t know that until they sent them to me and I looked online to see their application. But then again, it’s been 30 years since I’ve owned a set of speakers that had the spring loaded connectors.
Oh, I wasn't trying to group your video with all the others I talked about. On the contrary, you DO mention the vintage and legacy equipment when reviewing those flex pin connectors. Which reminded me of my blunder, buying banana plugs for spring loaded connections a few years back. (BTW, now I think I will purchase some of those flex pin connectors.) ;-)
@@Youthman Oh ok, LoL And BTW, that "Star Wars" theme home theater you showcased; Wow! I mean, WOW! Over the top. It truly is the best in the galaxy. LoL
These plugs look very nice, but unfortunately what many people is reporting is true: The spring is just really a piece of golden metal simulating a spring. It's not the right kind of alloy, it doesn't recover its shape when compressed, so inevitably your connection gets loose. I don't want to call it a fraud, but come on Sewell, you gotta know something's wrong with your product.
You measured the 90 degree vs silverback incorrectly. The 90 degree should have been rotated 90 degrees so that the plugs, not the housings, were oriented the same way. Once you do that, you'll see that you not only gaining quite a bit more space, but that your cables are not oriented in a way that they need to be bent drastically.
That’s funny. I had to go back and watch that part of the video. You’re correct I had them rotated the wrong direction, but I think most people got the point.
I had the 12awg Sewell Silverbacks. Some of the worst cabling and banana plugs for the price they're charging. I personally won't buy or recommend their products. The banana plugs did not fit super snug in my binding posts. Sonically, the top end was closed off compared to other brands.
Interesting. What speakers were you connecting them to? They fit very snug in mine. I have owned a lot of banana plugs over the years and am of the opinion they do not alter the sound in any way. Not challenging your experience, but I would be curious if you would be able to identify them in a blind test.
@@Youthman I was using the Elac Uni-fi BS-U5's. I then purchased some AudioBlast 10awg that came with the BFA style bananas and they fit very snug and the highs opened right up. The Audioblasts cost about half the price of the Sewells. I'm now on the ML 60 XTi's with Mogami 3104's with beryllium copper LS4 bananas.

Amps and speakers are designed to accept bare wire. Unless you're always changing things around no reason for another connection in the circuit. JMHO peace
Nothing wrong with using bare wire. As shared in the video, the purpose of banana plugs is for convenience and organization. I am continually swapping out amps, AVR’s, and speakers so that are an absolute must for me.
@@Youthman Yea agreed, they are a bit cheesy but if you are really in a hurry to set up something temporarily they are pretty good. I use them with cheap wire during experimental setup, then order higher quaility stuff say like Blue Jeans after I figure the lengths and pathways.
@@Youthman @Youthman Had the chance to purchase Graves 8 AWG cable from the 90s at £35 a metre from the original price of £300 a metre ( new old stock) yep super hard to work with and it's circumference is nearly 3.5 inches ...stupid I know 😕
The best connector, by far, is no connector. Now do banana clips vs soldered connection for stationary speakers etc. Compare price. Compare signal. Wonder why supposed 'AV' enthusiasts even consider anything else.
@@Youthman Because you have to connect the wire to the connector ..which defeats the whole point of its existance ... and thats why no other industry uses them !
If I were to do a blind test with you between a speaker cable that is bar wire and a speaker cable that has banana plugs, would you be able to accurately hear the difference between the two? The answer is no. There’s no sonic difference (positive or negative) with banana plugs. They simply add immense convenience when you need to swap AVR, amplifiers or if you speakers.
@@Youthman Obviously no one can hear any difference between ANY connector.. unless its loose . Bannana plugs were "invented in 1924.... For speakers ,Crimped spade connectos are better ,but again pointless compared to bare wire and spring terminals , as i said you have to connect your wire to the connector... if you use bare wire into a spring tensioned "crush receptical" there is no better connection other than soldering .
I’m still trying to understand why they are a bad idea. I continually swap out AVR’s, processors, speakers, and amplifiers. I absolutely love banana plugs for that very reason. Just because they may not be a good fit for you, doesn’t mean they’re a bad idea. They have a purpose and they serve that purpose very well.

@@Youthman Yea agreed, they are a bit cheesy but if you are really in a hurry to set up something temporarily they are pretty good. I use them with cheap wire during experimental setup, then order higher quaility stuff say like Blue Jeans after I figure the lengths and pathways.
Always had trouble finding good 🍌🍌🍌 plugs for my cables due to having 8 AWG... 😢
8 gauge is super difficult to work with. Any reason why you use 8gauge?
@@Youthman @Youthman Had the chance to purchase Graves 8 AWG cable from the 90s at £35 a metre from the original price of £300 a metre ( new old stock) yep super hard to work with and it's circumference is nearly 3.5 inches ...stupid I know 😕
Just go wire to terminal. Just adding another link in the connection to go wrong. Avg person isn’t swapping speakers all the time.
If you never swap speakers, banana plugs aren’t needed. I’ve been using banana plugs for over a decade and have never had one issue.
The best connector, by far, is no connector.
Now do banana clips vs soldered connection for stationary speakers etc. Compare price. Compare signal. Wonder why supposed 'AV' enthusiasts even consider anything else.
This AV Enthusiast needs them because of the various speakers, AVR’s and processors that I review each year.
They are the same ..they are all a very bad idea... spring clips and bare wire are way better
Why.
For speakers ,Crimped spade connectos are better ,but again pointless compared to bare wire and spring terminals ,
as i said you have to connect your wire to the connector... if you use bare wire into a spring tensioned "crush receptical" there is no better connection other than soldering .
Say no to banana plugs. If ya can. Solder speaker wire to the terminals.
I change out speakers often, I like variety! Banana plugs are the only way to go
Solder is fine if it’s permanent. Wouldn’t work at all for my situation.
@@YouthmanCan you leave a link for a video of yours about connecting multiple subwoofers ?
Sure. A quick search on TH-cam for Youthman Multiple Subwoofers shows both of them.
