I am glad we both agree that "what are you" is very much needed. I agree with most of what you mention. I also feel that while the warfare element is good, I would like to see some more interesting peacetime action players can do. Add wonders, natural wonders, maybe even more diplo actions, let use interact with the 3 "minor factions" where we can empower them in some way so they can train higher tier unit and not just wait for end game, etc. Stuff like that.
It really is suboptimal to take anything out of your affinity anyway with the cost in research being one tier higher and the new building and ressources you're going to build. "What are you" doesn't really change much to what you will be doing. Still nice to have it I would probably have put it as default with the mutator allowing all techs. Having so much choice in the beginning is harder on new players.
The momemt you said Alpha Centauri. Man I hope this game brings back a lot of those feelings because that game was amazing in my opinion. I really wish it got a proper revamp. No need to change the mechanics. Just update the graphics and allow for unlimited turns and let the fun begin. The strategy and complexity it had were amazing in my humble opinion.
Each leader also adds ten unique techs to the tech tree (one per tier). The first tech in each tier--the ones that have the leader's symbol on them--are techs that you can only get by playing that leader.
My main reservation with Zephon is that the content seems very limited , even for a base game. It essentially has 3 factions, and in 3 games you can pretty much see most of the units and experience most of the content. Normally, unit variety isn't a big issue in a 4x game, but your average 4x has way more content in the way of city management, research, resources and other systems, while Zephon is almost purely focused on combat.
True. I guess if proxy had the manpower and necessary wealth they could expanded on the base game. But that doesn't make what we got any less impressive. The different leaders are different enough that you can fool yourself into playing a different race. Sounds silly but there's a lot of replay values in the leaders.
@@TurKlack There actually isn't a lot of variety in the leaders. They are similar and have only one mission tree each, just like Gladius. They also all use the same limited pool of units. Back to AOW 4 for me!
Good overview Rob! I went in to this tonight to try to trash it a bit, see if I could find a way to show that adding diplo to Gladius would break the whole game. It doesn't, it's clear Proxy have thought about this pretty deeply and there are mechanics in here to cover so many potentially game-busting aspects that the addition of diplo often brings to 4X. The whole thing with Zephon fighting the... aliens, whatever they're called, that is a very interesting form of asymmetrical design we saw in Sorcerer King (not quite as radical as that though) or Distant Worlds when you set the game to have some very large and powerful prebuild factions. I think it's an excellent game so far, I'm hoping I don't find stuff that spoils these great first impressions later down the line.

@@battlemode ah that's a fair one, glad to hear you're bringing an unbiased viewpoint to your reviews. A rare thing nowadays in general entertainment media.
1) The level up effects are seen when you mouse over the yellow number "1", "2," etc. in the UI while a unit is selected. 2) "Each point of accuracy increases the hit chance by approximately 8.3%" Units tend to start at 6 Accuracy with gives them 50% hit chance. This is weird as it implies each shot is calculated, which would make Gatling guts low risk attacks and sniper attacks super high risk but I can't recall ever doing very low damage with sniper units... (perhaps because un-intuitively they have a large "Group size" and also have high accuracy). 3) The refugees from Rob's event just raised the city pop instantly from 3 to 4. You can see it in the city label and inside the city UI. 4) In general for people iffy about the symmetry: Each of the 8 leaders has access to one unique-to-them tech on each of the 10 tech tiers in addition to their 4-5 of unique staring features. In addition there are three affinities (each leader has one) and you gain access to techs that are of your affinity type one tier earlier. Also each leader gets their own event chain. So it does feel very different to play any of them even though they share units. One example is the Emulated Mind which is essentially like a "One City Challenge" civ (there are ways to get at least one more city) but she has powerful abilities to counter her gimped status like a very long range artillery cannon (6 and later 12 tiles range iirc). One issue with the leader-unique techs though is that they are often relatively minor stat boos that are just counteracting the way your faction is lore-gimped in the first place. Or in the case of the emulated mind it would be things like your cannon damage and range.
Levels: you can actually get info on this by mousing over the unit's level number on the unit card that appears in the lower left corner of the screen when they are selected. Each level gives a unit +5% hit points and damage, and +10% morale. Accuracy: each point of accuracy increases hit chance by 8.3%. At least, that's what it says when you mouse over the accuracy icon in any weapon entry in the compendium. I'd love to get more information about what that actually means, since it doesn't seem like units ever miss?
Accuracy works the same way as in Gladius. If you open the compendium and select any weapon, you can hover over the accuracy to see a small description. I agree, though, that the game could be a little more approachable when it comes to explaining it. Basically, when you attack, each weapon has a number of attacks, multiplied by the number of models in the unit. Each attack has a chance to hit based off the accuracy. When an attack hit it deals its damage, reduced by the armor of the unit that you attack, whose armor can be reduced by armor penetration. Keep in mind, though, that the whole process is static, i.e. the damage is not randomly generated each time, but is a fixed value based on the values above. One thing that might be confusing is that if you have a weapon with 1 attack and an accuracy 6 (50%), how can the hit chance be calculated? The one attack either hits or not. But take the Assault Rifle for example, and imagine that one "shot" with the Assault Rifle is not a single shot, but rather a burst, firing multiple bullets and with accuracy 6, 50% of those bullets hit. Like I said, the whole process, unfortunately, is not well explained in the game, and the above is what I have gathered over the years playing Gladius. It makes sense to me, but I can't be 100% sure if it is completely accurate, so if anyone detects an error in my explanation, please correct me.
I think you miss what the game really does well with the compendium. Lets take Accuracy. in the compendium it states "Each point of accuracy increases the hit chance by approximately 8.3%". How you get there is click on you unit such as Millitants. The unit card appears in the lower left. Everything you mouse over will give you a tool tip. Some items like image or the weapon icon give you the option to right click to open the compendium. Hover over the weapon right click. This will open the compendium for the assault rifle. Then you mouse over the attributes and learn about them. This gun has a damage of 1, no armor penetration, 1 attack, accuracy of 6 which is about 50%, and a range of 2 but the gun also have a trait of close quarters. This will increase the attack to 2 if you are in range 1. So this mean a basic unit of 6 Millitants in close quarters has 50% change to do up to 12 damage, 1 point of damage per attack. As for level, once again if you bring up that unit card and hover over the level you find out each level give you 5% increase in damage and health and 10% moral. Its all there you may have to just slow down and look. Thanks for the video it is very well done.
Wowzers Batman! An eXplorminate Rob review of ZEPHON just before launch day! 2024 just keeps getting more and more awesome. Been waiting with mouth watering anticipation for ZEPHON all year long and here we are just a few hours before release on the 8th. That is some sweet praise when it comes to the leader interaction being similar to SID MEIER'S ALPHA CENTAURI my favorite Sid game alongside CIV II and BEYOND EARTH. Am really happy and impressed with the audio work from the music and everything about the world to the super immersive mesmerizing voice work. This was the one thing i always felt would have taken WARHAMMER 40,000 GLADIUS: RELICS OF WAR to that off the chart Warhammer 40,000 realm with all the cool over the top dialogue of the 40k universe. Praise the TOO MANY VOICES Mod team for coming to the rescue on that front though vanilla audio for combat is still great flowing with a deathlike harmony alongside the annihilating sounds of warfare. TMV just got another update today for some of the DEMOLITION DLC units. ZEPHON reminds me alot of a tactical strategic turn based version of THE FOREVER WINTER with its personality of humanity transfigured into something half abomination half savior evolved into being to survive on a desolate doomsday world. Love how they keep evolving their game system reminding me of how tabletop systems like GURPS and DUNGEONS & DRAGONS keep improving and used for many different games. I will definitely be spending over a thousand hours with ZEPHON especially when taking into account future updates/DLC. Games like GLADIUS and ZEPHON are like tabletop games which can be played forever. Totally agree on the freedom of PROXY having their own ip with ZEPHON and the fun of always starting a new game which has been my experience with GLADIUS where i play almost every day. Am a big fan of the PARADOX DLC formula reminding me of tabletop gaming where addons are regularly coming out for years keeping games alive and vibrant as well as giving us new directions which would have not been possible if they released the complete game and left it at that. Thanks for the great review Rob and be well. I have noticed having a big breakfast of scrambled eggs, potatoes in any form they sell, orange juice and coffee made a big difference in getting well fast along with a healthy midnight snack of a fruit cocktail ☕
My biggest concern for the game is replayability. Gladius has so much replayability because it has so many unique factions. However you only have the human faction here with the possibility to modify them in one of two paths. And the fact that you can mix them sort of waters down the uniqueness of them.
I wish the leaders were more like the Starcraft 2 co-op leaders, they derive from 3 factions but can drastically change the aesthetics and playstyle like for zerg you have Alexei Stukov who makes heavy use of infected Terran units and equipment, Egon Stetmann has mecha zerg which still play as a swarm but use relay points that repair or boost their abilities, and then there's Dehaka with the Primal Zerg that's about making the units he has more elite and stronger. The same base races and mechanics but tweaked in terms of looks and abilties to make them their own unique sub faction.
I recently tried Gladius and liked it. My one concern with Gladius and apprently Zephon - the graphics are too dark/muddy for my liking, making it hard to make out things. I like bright and shiny :D
