Dr. Taimur Rehman on behalf of my current 5th year (graduating B.Arch) students, my colleagues and Razia Hassan School of Architecture, BNU, thank you for you most compact and useful introduction to Al-Farabi. Much appreciated and with gratitude. We are currently doing a 12 week studio aiming at the design of a modest scale educational environment carefully conceived in light of Al-Farabi's ideas on Education.

    .
    The Second Teacher
    - Influenced by Greek philosophers: Aristotle (metaphysics), Plato (theory of cohesion), Plotinus (emanational cosmology) Ptolemy (astronomy)
    - Emanationist theory:
Plotinus: The One, mind, soul, human
Intellect flows from first case to the subsequent, from simplicity to complexity
First cause/intellect (uncaused, God), self contemplates (nothing else is there for it) to emanate second intellect which self-contemplates and contemplates on first cause, and so on till tenth intellect, humans and their world after the 10th intellect
Emanation: not wilful, but rather it's a quality of intellect starting from the first cause
    - Cosmology, connection, 7 levels/heavens, planets in the first heaven with moon being the closest
    Higher and lower worlds
higher immaterial world - laFani, celestial, intellect, made of universal intelligibles
lower material world - Fani (based on generation and decay)
Humans: in between higher and lower worlds
How does human mind grasp/understand the world?
    - 4 faculties of mind/soul: appetitive (desire/aversion), sensitive (sensory), imaginative, intellect/reason (diff. humans from animals)
    How humans got intellect?
    Illuminationist: intellect illuminated from God
Intellect: a divine quality, helps to understand the world, leads to divine
    - Political philosophy: al-Madina al-Fadila, The Perfect State, Plato's Republic, commentary on Aristotle's work. The state should be guided by philosophers (whose main goal is to guide the rulers) on the system of rule.
Ideal society: realization of true happiness
    - Psychology: social psychology
Society two types: wicked/errant & ignorant
Dream interpretation, Greek philosophy, Sigmund Freud
    - Music: played Saz, music theory, music's therapeutic effects

best lectures, now I understand why al-farabi is so highly rated. Actually I think what plato, Aristotle, ghazali, farabi, avicenna thought, Baruch-Spinoza combines them all into a one comprehensive whole, Judaic and Islamic philosophy are similar. Hegel and other called Spinoza prince of philosophers. thanks, greetings from india!

The first teacher is Al kindi in Islamic Philosophy not Aristotle. Al kindi is considered the first teacher because he brought Greek philosophy in the Arab world the first time by translating Greek philosophical treatises

    • @servantoftheexpander9688
