Smart locks are definitely the way to go....I am looking at my options at the moment. You didn't mention if you can access these locks remotely to unlock or add a pin for someone to use.? I assume there is an app to control settings.
Good question. We have a smart lock that we had to make a makeshift cover for because our door gets an excessive amount of sun and it was killing the battery.
Unless I'm missing something, my almost 6 year old August Smart Lock already does what Apple is hoping to have ready next year, it's called Auto-Unlock. Works great for me. 90% of the time the door is unlocked by the time I get to it. The other 10% I have to wait maybe 5 seconds for it to catch up.
The difference with using the U1 chip is that it’s way more accurate, and doesn’t necessarily rely on geolocation to unlock on arrival. You could be in your yard, but still in range of the lock, and walking back up to it would auto-unlock it, rather than having to essentialy leave the bluetooth range/zone of the lock with current solutions. It also knows which side of the lock you are, so it won’t do this when you’re inside.
Do either of them work with home assistant? 🙃 Wish they weren't wifi. What happened to Z-wave locks? I definitely prefer to only have to replace batteries once a year.
Unfortunately not a direct integration with Home Assistant right now that I'm aware of. What I'm using for my Schlage Encode Plus is a HomeBridge switch that turns on when the locks is closed and turns off when the lock is open. That way I can at least run automation in Home Assistant if the lock is open or closed. It's been working extremely well and I would just use that same setup for the Lockly. Hopefully Lockly gets Matter support eventually.
Ugh….. I thought I invented that trick with my level lock. I have a kasa switch that turns on and off as lock status changes and also locks and unlocks the level lock via HomeKit automation. Then I have HA control the kasa switch and boom! Integration for the cost of a $10 smart plug.
I have purchased one and installed it a week ago. It's a FANTASTIC piece of hardware. The Home Lockly app is very buggy so I deleted it and installed their 'regular' phone app on my Android phone and it works well. The battery life he describes is accurate based on how much the battery has drained in a week. Great that they include two and they charge via USB C.
A thing I think is important to remember is that a lock should only make it inconvenient enough for someone to try to break in elsewhere, or to use another method (like a window, which is usually covered by insurance)
The Lockly seems great! And in your video there didn’t seem to be a bad lag time. Consistency has to rate highly for any lock, especially on the main entrance. That’s where I have trouble moving away from the Yale and Schlage products to try something that might not be as reliable.
About 9 years ago I used locks from Quickset I think. It recognized my phone as i approached the door and unlocked. If my phone was on me i could also touch the lock anywhere and it would lock it. So I am perplexed you mentioned a lock coming soon with this. Is quickset not offering it anymore?
What profesionals use? Is better to use solutions with wire or wifi? What if I have to desing smart home in whole building? What about solutions like knx?
Nice! I highly recommend checking out the Yale locks. I’ve had the Assure one for 2 years and it auto locks/unlocks with phone or watch nearby or you can lock it by putting your hand over the screen like the old Apple Watches. Also, it takes 4 AAs 😂
The second lock feature with rechargable battery packs sound good to me. I also would avoid a doorbell on my door lock. I think it confuses some people, so first one is out. Also those batteries are NOT cheap for good brand batteries. Would run $35 to reolace them.
Pretty cool updates! I feel like the "fingerprint to unlock your iphone" era was pretty shortlived, and the face scanning to unlock your phone will be around for a long time. I wouldn't be surprised to see this technology go the same way.
Am I the only one who's door doesn't line up well enough to use a smart door lock? Need to give the door that little push to get the deadbolt to engage.
I had that issue. I took a file and shaved the sides of strike plate down ever so slightly and it worked like a charm. Deadbolt smoothly locks and unlocks without needing to push the door in
what I would love to see its something like a "smart door". meaning a door with a ring bell and smart lock incorporated by default with some clever way to hook it to power
I love the idea of the Lockly Visage. But no Matter support is a deal breaker for me. Even though I'd be using the face unlock to control it 99% of the time, I still want the device in my Home Assistant. Maybe they'll have an updated model next year that supports Matter. I'll finally get it if that happens.
I'd want the lock itself to maintain a copy of the biometrics at all times and not be dependent on any communication. In fact I'd prefer if you could schedule it from HA but that the schedule too would be in the lock in case of communications failures or HA going down.
An important point with the Lockly is that you can wire it in to the power and do not have to worry about the battery going flat. A key issue with a short term rental in another city a long way from where you live. A real problem if you have not been there for months and have guests arriving and battery goes flat. Just install a powerpoint with an inbuilt USB socket next to the door and run a standard USB cable from the powerpoint to the charging socket on the battery and keep it fully charged. Then cycle the two rechargeable batteries twice a year to keep them fresh.
I haven't really done any research beyond the video but the Lockly seems to have an actual key slot. So if all else fails with the powered part you can still get in. The Phillips doesn't have any such thing visible at least, if that is fully dependent on batteries, it's only a matter of time before you stand there waving your hand and going nowhere. I certainly hope there's some other mechanism that isn't immediately visible.
@@KimmoJaskariWe have an earlier version Lockly Vision "Elite" which has a key slot. We have the key in a key safe near the front door. We have had a couple instances were something has gone wrong and guests cannot get in ( one seemed to be a communication issue between the app and the lock and another a not very smart guest). They phone us and we give them the code to the key safe. Next visit we recode the key safe.
They are all nice, but my 4 year old Nuki 2 smart lock can u lock the door when I approach it already with the phone in my pocket. This is by far the most convenient option of them all.
I bought and have installed the lockley visage it works very well as described, but I am extremely disappointed that it does not integrate with either home assistant or IFTTT. The status of the lock being locked or unlocked should be something I can see plainly in my home assistant dashboard.
I ordered the Lockly with your Home Depot link. I can’t figure out how to add it to Apple Home. The app just keeps saying incorrect code. Any ideas? I tried it manually and by scanning the QR
Nice video and interesting content, but given we use our garage entrance, a simple keypad works great for visitors rather than dishing out this kind of money without added benefits for them.
I would be curious about a facial growth test for the face detection lock. Due to my current lifestyle, where I would be off-site and have very different daily hours, I only shave sometimes (a week or longer). I have very prominent facial hair that grows thick and fast, so in a few days, I can look like a very different person. So how would it register me from clean-shaven to having an almost beard?
it would be cool to know if the camera has other usages... like request remote open the door, take pictures of ppl at the door, video conference, can the camera be added to the built in security of the household "?", etc. Thanks
my bank uses palm reading instead of the fingerprint reading other banks use at the ATMs and has been like this for the last idk 10-15 years. its more consistent and faster, but we'll have to see how they'll do with locks because it's a way less sturdy material of course
These look cool, but I have so many more questions. How well do they work if the wifi is down? Do they require internet access to set up? Can they integrate with Home Assistant? If the company ever stops supporting them, will they still work?
I wonder how they will work in the winter. Especially in areas where there is real winter. Palm lock will not work with gloves on, I guess, and with -20 I rather keep my gloves on.
I'd love to combine these smart locks with a regular security camera that has person recognition. If the camera detects me and the lock detects my palm or face, good to go. I'd also love to have the active side of the lock on the wall, instead of on the door. Batteries for devices like this suck, no matter how convenient they are. About the security tests: try pictures taken from further away, i.e. a picture of most of your arm and most of your upper body. I'd love to see if the security still is good when you fill the entire POV of the lock's camera with a picture, so it has no outside clues that it's looking at a picture. It honestly wouldn't surprise me if some of these companies just programmed in something that the lock won't open if they see a rectangle, like an ipad or a picture printed on a sheet of paper.
I've yet to come across a smart lock that handles our door lock (long live Lockitron...that did)...its able to be buzzed open and so the bolt only needs to go in half the distance of normal locks. These smart locks always go into error because it can't throw the full distance.
I'd prefer those devices if only the scanners (+keypad) were on the outside and the "decision" making electronics as well as the opening motor to be inside. Before you say you can kick-in that door faster either way... I'm in Germany and have a metal door with multiple locks around the door frame ;-)
When you mention ANY smart device, can you briefly mention its integration with home assistant, matter, or even siri/alexa/google? For us, lack of local control can be a dealbreaker.
I am looking for a smart lock that does not have a knob on the inside. The door has a window so any lock that has a knob is like no lock at all. The one I use right now has a key on the inside and outside.
Killing me with these new products! Immediately after watching, I find myself driving to a Home Depot 30 mins away who has a facial recognition deadbolt lock in stock that I don’t need….but I want
Good video. As locks change, just don't want to get locked out due to power failures. Remember living in a neighborhood (many years ago) with damage from storms, no power for days and my neighbors could not get into their house! From that point on, made sure "electronics" would work. I am assuming even ugly people's faces will be accepted? lol. Btw, love your new look and without tattoos everywhere.
...you're serious? I fear there will be a real duplication of someone getting lucky for not having to pay for it, and it's on someone else account (of the same hand). I just think it needs a multifactor security to account for when it comes to an actual payment.
I will give any device without standard AA or AAA batteries a pass. Regardless of whether they supply extras, manufacturer-specific rechargeable lithium batteries will eventually degrade and have to be replaced. When the supplier eventually no longer supports the model you may have to replace the entire lock. There's a method to their madness. I hope thousands of others echo this so that the manufacturers take notice.
Definitely agreed there. I'd love to see standardized Li-Ion battery formats so you can go to basically any store and buy a replacement for nearly any device.
your watch doesn't use AA or AAA batteries. you've probably seen a CR2032 we use for BIOS clocks also. there are different sizes of batteries, doesn't mean they're not standard. some electronics need higher voltages or higher capacities. CR123a is one of them. 18650 is another one.
Hello... Greetings from India🇮🇳. I Love your content so much I have a request. Can you please make a video on how to install and run home assistant on an android device with termux. It will be very helpful
If Apple or one of the other big players release TouchID or FaceID everyone jumps on it to test how secure it really is. But for all these devices you just have to hope it will be fine. Who tests how good these hand en face scanning is? (Good not in how quickly or correctly it scans you, but how big is the chance it accepts other hands or faces.)
I like the functionality, but it sounds like both rely on the cloud? You've said in other comments that they don't work with HomeAssistant yet? Do either of them work your internet connection goes down (or if power goes out)? If not, you've still gotta carry a key. We're getting closer to the future, it's just gotta run locally :)
Am I mistaken or is there no key for this lock as in for some reason the battery died, no one is home ? Wife feels the palm is better than the mug shot. Key or no key? That would be a game changer.
Battery dying generally not a concern. You should be getting notifications it’s low as well as hear it being weak. For houses, you also usually would have another door if everything else fails
There is going to be no need for device specific battery packs like the Lockly as there are already USB-C recharable AA(A) and CR123A batteries. I rather have the option of being able to use regular batteries just to be safe in the future. Especially with smart home companies, they could be gone the moment you bought your product.
The palm detecting lock sounds more interesting to me out of the two, but I have to wonder what would prevent it from working. Gloves, whether for fashion or winter weather? Accidentally getting ketchup or something on your hands from a messy lunch, or similarly basically any dirty hands? If it goes off of the veins in your hands, does it get confused if it's a hot or cold day and there's more or less blood flow in your hands? What if you get a mild cut or bruise on your hand? Granted as long as you can enter a numeric combination you can get in anyways, so maybe I'm overthinking it.
There's not a direct integration as far as I'm aware of right now. What I'm using for my Schlage Encode Plus is a HomeBridge switch that turns on when the locks is closed and turns off when the lock is open. It's been working extremely well and I would just use that same setup for the Lockly. Hopefully it gets Matter support eventually.
Do you think we'll see more deadbolts that unlock with your biometrics? ✋👍👁
I really hope so, competition is good
Aqara made one but it’s not available in Canada yet 😢
Any word on integration of either product with popular Smart home hubs (SmartThings, Home Assistant, etc.)?

Really wish we'd see more multi point compatible smart locks but it's good to see the market is growing
Please scan and 3d print your face or palm to see if it works :)
Instead, you can sever your hand and test as well. Some movies had a scene with fingers and eyes..
That's some Rob next-level testing right there!
The palmscanner takes an infrared picture of your hand where you can see your blood vessels.
@@unknownxy8026 Put the hand in the microwave?
good review but we need to see how do they stand in very hot or cold snowy weather

Pretty obvious Reed showed they stand up in hot weather.
These are dope! Having your door unlock when it detects your phone is a terrible idea. If someone gets your phone then you're screwed.
Really like it but where do they store the data for your face / fingerprints - all local?
Well if you replace the word 'smart' with 'spy' you'll have a fair idea what happens to the data collected
@@moregrouchy that's why i will not buy any smart home device that wants to send my info to the cloud.
With critical personal identifiable data like a palm print or face identification I would only use it if it were 100% stored and processed locally.
Probably will sell it to absolutely anyone who pays a penny.
Next thing you know, you’ll be recommended skin care products, based upon your face.😅

100%. It's the most important device to get right. A false positive is somewhat catastrophic here. There really should be more info on this!
What about Brute Force to remove them as they stand up …?
I like the functionality, but it sounds like both rely on the cloud? You've said in other comments that they don't work with HomeAssistant yet?
Do either of them work your internet connection goes down (or if power goes out)? If not, you've still gotta carry a key.
We're getting closer to the future, it's just gotta run locally :)
For those wanting a lock that integrates with HA, checkout Yale locks
Am I mistaken or is there no key for this lock as in for some reason the battery died, no one is home ? Wife feels the palm is better than the mug shot. Key or no key? That would be a game changer.
Battery dying generally not a concern. You should be getting notifications it’s low as well as hear it being weak. For houses, you also usually would have another door if everything else fails
What about price?
What about drowssap as a password? It's pretty tricky, right?
It still has a keypad.
The most important question about the Lockly: Does it work with Home Assistant Reed?
There's not a direct integration as far as I'm aware of right now. What I'm using for my Schlage Encode Plus is a HomeBridge switch that turns on when the locks is closed and turns off when the lock is open. It's been working extremely well and I would just use that same setup for the Lockly. Hopefully it gets Matter support eventually.
I am super skeptical about handing over biometric data to smart device companies. But there's no denying that the tech is really cool.
👍 just for the Tommy Boy ref
