- Greta Lovisa Gustafsson (September 18, 1905 - April 15, 1990) was a Swedish-American actress. Regarded as one of the greatest screen actresses, she was known for her melancholic, sombre persona, her film portrayals of tragic characters, and her subtle and understated performances. Garbo launched her career with a secondary role in the 1924 Swedish film The Saga of Gösta Berling. Her performance caught the attention of Louis B. Mayer, chief executive of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, who brought her to Hollywood in 1925. She stirred interest with her first American silent film, Torrent (1926). Garbo's performance in Flesh and the Devil (1927), her third movie, made her an international star.[2] In 1928, Garbo starred in A Woman of Affairs, which catapulted her at MGM to its highest box-office star, surpassing the long-reigning Lillian Gish. Other well-known Garbo films from the silent era are The Mysterious Lady (1928), The Single Standard (1929) and The Kiss (1929).
By 1932 her success allowed her to dictate the terms of her contracts and she became increasingly selective about her roles. She continued in films such as Mata Hari (1931), Susan Lenox (Her Fall and Rise) (1931), Grand Hotel (1932), Queen Christina (1933) and Anna Karenina (1935).
Many critics and film historians consider her performance as the doomed courtesan Marguerite Gautier in Camille (1936) to be her finest and the role gained her a second Academy Award nomination. However, Garbo's career soon declined and she became one of many stars labelled box office poison in 1938. Her career revived with a turn to comedy in Ninotchka (1939), which earned her a third Academy Award nomination. But after the failure of Two-Faced Woman (1941), she retired from the screen at the age of 35 after acting in 28 films. In 1954, Garbo was awarded an Academy Honorary Award "for her luminous and unforgettable screen performances".
After retiring, Garbo declined all opportunities to return to the screen, shunned publicity, and led a private life. She became an art collector whose paintings included works by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Pierre Bonnard and Kees van Dongen.
She was successfully treated for breast cancer in 1984. Towards the end of her life, only Garbo's closest friends knew she was receiving six-hour dialysis treatments three times a week at The Rogosin Institute in New York Hospital. A photograph appeared in the media in early 1990, showing Koger assisting Garbo, who was walking with a cane, into the hospital.
Greta died on April 15, 1990, aged 84, in the hospital, as a result of pneumonia and renal failure.
In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked her fifth on its list of the greatest female stars of classic Hollywood cinema.
She will always be my personal favorite actress. So gorgeous!!!

I had never realized just how Beautiful this woman actually was.
Those sultry, bedroom eyes. Time did not treat her well. But she certainly was a beauty when young.
Saw her one time when she passed by us in the park in NYC, had no idea who she was until someone pointed out, she is Garbo!

Era bella anche in età adulta... Io non so perché nel passato mirano sempre sulla gioventù, la bellezza e la magrezza....non sul talento!
Erano molto aggrappati alla giovinezza che una donna talmente bella come Greta a 40 anni, doveva essere detta di essere "vecchia" per essere rimpiazzati dalle giovani.
Però è così geniale Greta che ha fatto il modo di "sparire" nell'olimpo per essere per sempre soprannominata la divina di una bellezza fredda e nello stesso tempo angelica... ma però non del tutto! Non è Tanto riuscita a scomparire nelle ultime foto! Per fare capire che la bellezza la gioventù non sono per SEMPRE. Bisogna invecchiare ma bene. Come ha fatto la nostra Greta che è riuscita a rimanere la divina è veramente per sempre!

@@MrKarlsea si giusto... Mi sa che, mi ricordo che il suo ultimo film degli anni 40, è stato un flop. Comunque ha lasciato giovanissima la sua carriera, che poteva avere 30 anni... Pur consapevole che stava "invecchiando" e ha cercato di focalizzare la sua immagine nei fotogrammi così a renderla immortale. Che nessuno ha fatto, parecchie sono sparite, e sono state anche grandi attrici ma non c'è le ricordiamo, Greta è forse l'unica dea del muto che è giunta fino a noi.

I don’t know if it was the quality of photographs but she looked much older at a younger age. I think it’s true that many people aged quicker back then than now.

But otherwise it seems clear she aged naturally, she looked 80 at 80 but the bone structure was still there, like Katherine Hepburn!

She certainly had an awkward adolescence.
I think she was an awkward person, but in her modelling and acting years, she was styled by others to look the part. She certainly was naturally and stunningly beautiful, but she did not have any fashion sense herself - or even sense of dressing flattering or finding a flattering hairdo. Maybe she just didn´t care.

But I suggest see one or two of her movies on TH-cam, I recommend fx "Ninotchka" from 1939 or "Camille" with Robert Taylor 1936.
I have no doubt that, after watching them, you will understand why she captivated and fascinated everyone then, and why she still does to this day.

@@merryrose6788 Oh yes, queen Christina was a wonderful movie - and very moving. It was a part that ment a lot to her - and it shows.
I think what I (from early on in my life) found fascinating about her, was the fact that she was in all aspects a rarity and one of a kind.
There was no one similar to her then, and never will be again.

In Queen Christina, when she's frustrated by being told that Europe is an armed camp and that because of her father, the dead king, she should marry her hero cousin and produce an heir. "Must we live for the dead?" This is a great question. And "The snow is like a wild thing." Just a beautiful delivery of incredible lines:)
