King's Indian Defense, Sämisch Variation - Standard chess #46

- I played the King's Indian Defense in a standard chess game as black with my opponent replying with the Sämisch Variation. Pawn duos are a great strength, and should be combated at an early point. In the Sämisch Variation of the King's Indian however, white builds a pawn trio. How can one challenge such a structure? I elect a plan that first involves supporting a b5 advance which helps to chip away at white's strong central pawn presence. The Rapid time control for this game is 15 minutes with a 5 second increment.

I can totally relate to his opponent. I often have this pretty equal position games, just to lose it all in one endgame blunder.

What i really like about your games - you take a loooong time to think - but mostly when it is important to do so, what i like about your explanations - you always look on the whole board to find out weak squares to put your pieces on, good diagonals for your bishops and so on,very instructive! As a King's Indian player who's struggled against the Samisch I really enjoyed this game. I've tried this a6 c6 b5 idea a few times and didn't have great results but after watching this video and looking at the analysis I have a better understanding of how to play it. Thanks Jerry!

To be quite honest, I'm not sure why his opponent didn't proceed with the attack immediately. There's no obvious reason for White to have to preliminarily lose his h-pawn.

Watched all 46 standard games. Very instructive. There are to my knowledge no other videos by other teachers who are showing the full thought process for standard time control games. Annotated games are useful but they show only the final product - not how the player(s) arrived at it. I have learned a lot from these videos. Would love to see more. Or if anyone could direct us to similar content? Another thing I have noticed is it is not all about tactics. Most of it is strategy and knowing the right plans.

Meanwhile I made a blunder before the match even started thinking the title said sammich (sandwich) variation. I was really looking forward to the PB&J attack. It’s unstoppable!

Hi Jerry, question - at about move 5, in your mind how did you justify so many pawn moves (a6, c6 and b5)? Isn't it a bit counter-intuitive to move so many pawns before pieces in the opening?

Anirudh More it is unclear where Bc8 and Nb8 belong. White did a lot of pawn moves aswell. This is why black is not behind in development however I think 5. ... 0-0 is the main move.
If you are interested in this opening look for Kasparov-games in this position. He had some nice wins as black against the Sämisch.
This isn't something that Jerry came up with on the spot. It's one of the known ways to play this position. The reason its ok to make so many pawn moves is because White also made a lot of pawn moves and Black needs a way to challenge the center.

Thanks for all the replies :) I think I understand now. #1 It's opening theory and #2 it's okay because white has made many pawn moves as well and thus black is not behind in development.
Watched this game live, it was great. At the time, I didn't understand why you didn't take the pawn on H2, but it was astonishing to see you think so deeply into the game, albeit a little inaccurately. Doesn't matter, I'm impressed at your ability to quickly see tactics from the opposing side. You've taught me so much.

On move 20 you played Nf6, and I was wondering if Nc5 was another possibility, given the threat of Nb3, forking the rook and queen, or just winning the queen if O-O-O. Does white have a good way to defend Nb3, or is there some counter play white gets so they don't have to worry about Nb3?

Yes, at 17:37 he moved the rook as you predicted but why weren't other options considered for black? He could have moved Queen or bishop to C1, giving his king a flight square and yes, white would be in a great position, but it would be a whole different game as to how to proceed from there. Just wondering why you didn't take that into consideration as you were narrating.

hello chessnetwork, i was wondering that white has multiple chances to capture the d5 square with the e4 pawn, as it is in 26:21, 26:56, and 29:01. Wouldn't that pawn be a dangerous passer pawn ??. I was pretty confused on why your opponent doesn't play that. Please reply...

What about on move 23 Rab8 with the idea of playing Bh6 in the next move with the idea of deflecting the queen from defending mate on b2? Is there a way to refute this? Just a thought.

around 32:38 couldn't you move Rd8 and pin the queen. If Queen takes rook at d8, then the second rook takes Queen at d8, checks the king and take the second rook at d1?

After 9... bxc4 10. Bxc4 d5, what was wrong with 11. e5, striking at the knight on f6? Then after 11... dxc4 12. exf6 Nxf6, white will regain the pawn with Qa4 and Qxc4 or Qxc6.
At 13:46 doesn't 14...Qb6 simply pick up a free pawn? I was 100% expecting it to be played and can't see why it wasn't.
At 13:45 I was of the opinion that c5 was a better way to challenge the center than e5. In that case, if white took or pushed the pawn, it would open the diagonal for your bishop, let e5 be accessible to your pieces (as a now weak square), and would probably weaken white's control over the d5 square.
Also, upon capture, you'd be giving up an isolated side pawn rather than a healthy central pawn
Honestly, the most entertaining part is seeing, at the end, which moves the engine considers good or bad.

Hey Jerry thanks for the great video. After 10 ...d5 aren't you losing that pawn? White has three attackers on it but you only have a pawn and knight as a defense. Am I missing a large downside for white that would result from the capture? Otherwise I don't see why exd5 would not be attractive for white.
Andrew Flockhart 11. exd5 Nb6 attacking the hanging bishop on c4 and the pawn on d5. Bishop has to retreat and white can safely recapture the pawn now that it’s attacked four times and only defended twice

Hi Jerry, very nice game and very well thought out strategy! Long time fan here. Wanted to ask if you may give the "learn from your mistakes" feature of lichess analysis a try during one of your recordings.
It's a button under the graph that appears after requesting a computer analysis. It jumps through your mistakes and blunders (if any) and lets you try to guess the best move. It also accepts alternative moves of similar strength. If you don't find one of the top moves it suggests you try again. You can then do the same for your opponent's mistakes. You can repeat it and click for the solution to see if you chose the strongest move of the top candidates.
It would be interesting to hear your thought process after providing your own analysis as usual and to see if in retrospect you are more likely to find the best move. I find it very helpful for my own games. Your own understanding in evaluating the position, opportunities and threats would be great to see if you agree with the engine and perhaps in some cases may see something that the computer misevaluates.
I understand that you essentially do this by manually reviewing the game. However you may find it very convenient and you ensure that you haven't missed anything.
I like how you have the good habit of reviewing your games on your own first and only then turn on the engine.
I think this feature may add an additional layer to your analysis. I personally find it fun like chess puzzles for your own games. If you've already tried it let us know what you think.
