When you see The Darkness live you really appreciate what an amazing band and live act they are. One of the most thrilling, fun shows I've ever had the pleasure to see.
This is a masterclass in covering a song. Radiohead is in my top5 bands ever and Street Spirit is a song that makes me very emotional and vulnerable. When I saw Radiohead perform it live, I was very emotional and touched by the sheer genius of it. Really a masterpiece. And then, here we are with Justin Hawkins and Co. making a bold, risky move in covering such song with a balls to the wall approach, making it theirs and not holding anything. The Maiden-esque riffs, the absurdly high vocals and the whole glam rock energy, it seems like a recipe for disaster and yet it comes out amazingly, like a whole new experience compared to the Radiohead one. Kudos The Darkness, this is amazing.
I was in that crowd and I can remember going home being blown away by this cover not to mention the rest of the set still one of the best gigs that I have ever been to....and ive been to fucking hundreds!!!
OK so just watched Justin Rides Again on cover songs. He ref'd this. Love, love, love Radiohead and that album, but Justin killed it. It's just great in here. Live even better. Perhaps because I'm not from Britain, G'day Mate🐨🦘 I get The Darkness and how much they are flying the 🗺🇬🇧 right now. They are just refloating everyone post covid and like Foo Fighters do from USA side, they just spread joy and blow the doors off concerts. I just smile hearing their music. Like Pirates of the Caribbean, you love Jack Sparrow even though he's a bit naughty. That's Justin. Doing cover songs of Taylor's favourite bands and just wowing us, or doing covers of huge songs like this and making it better. If there was a Professor of the art of Stagecraft at a University Justin Hawkins would be shortlisted in the company of Michael Hutchence, David Bowie, Dave Grohl, Jimi Hendrix, Freddy Mercury, Joan Jett, Blondie. I'm sure there's a seat at a University for him. A cooler musical version of Professor Severous Snape if there ever was one. I digressed. Criminally underrated band and artist is Justin. The more I hear his podcasts, the more I see it's not blather, but substance. It's wowing me. I can only imagine what it inspires in 10 year olds learning guitar at school. Makes me 😊. Right, I'm off to put on the headphones, press replay and go into orange zone on volume! HMS Hawkins should be launched in your honour for "Services to the country" or some such. That's yr impact right now!
A great tribute cover to one band from another, if you like The Darkness great, if you like Radiohead great, if you like both you'll appreciate this cover.
Live covers are part of the magic of attending live shows. Would the same rules apply to covering a song on an album? I'd guess royalties would be involved at that point?
I was waiting at a bus stop after a night out in Leeds in about 2003 and got talking to a bloke who said he was in The Darkness when they did ska covers of Radiohead songs. I thought he was full of shit but after I downloaded this mp3 off Kazaa I began to think that he might not have been lying
Generally I don't like bands doing covers, but at least these guys made it sound like themselves. Most covers are just stripped down, slow versions of the original (and the end result is always cringeworthy if you do that).
The backing to me sounds rather Manic Street Preachers-esque (namely MSP's Generation Terrorists album). Although I'm not a fan of the Darkness, I would say it's a good variation which distances itself from the original.
Er, no. They'd succeed fantastically by not remaking the song in hackneyed cock-rock lite. The best of the era that The Darkness pays homage to, I can appreciate. And this rendition gains from the pedigree of the writing behind it. However, it pales in comparison to the genuine article.
Best Easter egg ever…
At 00:59 is the ascending guitar line from “Just”.
Yet another clever way that this is the ultimate cover.
Also in the bridge theres a bit of just

so well put, couldn't agree more.
This is how you do a cover. Respect the original, yet make it your own. Very well done.
Why aren’t The Darkness bigger? They’re such an excellent band with a unique frontman. People seemed to love them for 5 mins and that was that
Their albums after the first weren't as good, was always going to be a hard follow up
People know them they had a big sucsess with their first album
Publicity? Takes money to break into America
I think they were portrayed as a novelty at the time and just had a stigma that stopped them getting the sucess the deserved, very talented band
Theyre a live band. They don't record well.
Love radiohead. Love the darkness. Can't believe I'm just hearing this.
Me too. ✌️😂😂😂
@@hgill2964and another one here!
Same.
Justin Hawkins listening to I believe in a thing called love and octave higher brought me here

This band is so underrated. It's 2020 and I'm here giving my like.
It's now 2022 and I just gave them mine
I like both the Darkness and Radiohead, and this is a great cover, respectful of the original material. Good job.

Absolutely rated boys. That was rare good.
A great tribute cover to one band from another, if you like The Darkness great, if you like Radiohead great, if you like both you'll appreciate this cover.
I'm still waiting for Radiohead to cover a Darkness song.
they are incredible live, obviously. they just played the venue where i work in chicago. amazing show.
How about putting the whole show out on DVD? Please...
Fuckin' love the Just riff they threw in. Awesome cover.
Holy. Fucking. Shit 😮 these are God's amongst mere mortals 🤘🏻🎙🍯
Gives me chills EVERY time
This is how you cover a song.
Nice cover
I'd love to hear Justin cover some early Dragonforce, bringing some of that metal ballad timbre ZP Theart had going.
This cover rules! Would RadioHead lend the cover rights if they didn't love it too?!?
7 years too late but any band can cover any other once it's released without permission. EMI own the rights to the song anyway.

The riff sounds like something Iron Maiden would put out 🙏

This is my favorite cover of radiohead song ever.
im a huge fan of radiohead. but the vocals on this wins me over. go hair glama rock :) so ridiculous its actually good

Radiohead meets Iron Maiden. Genius!
Fuck Yeahh!! \m/ >_< \m/

i preferred the way he used to sing the chorus back in 04

Dare i say, better than the original? :| *ALL ABOARD THE RAGE TRAIN*
way better than the original, but also the only good track of the album
Metal as FUCK! \m/\m/
The backing to me sounds rather Manic Street Preachers-esque (namely MSP's Generation Terrorists album). Although I'm not a fan of the Darkness, I would say it's a good variation which distances itself from the original.
I like this more than Radiohead's
Dodgy note on the 'faaaade', but I'll let him off, cos this works! 👍🤘
