I would like to point out that the Vallejo workers are currently strike for better pay and better work conditions, so if you're going to buy paints maybe hold off on Vallejo until they agree to treat their workers better
Yes and no. Generally, you boycott a company when the union specifically calls for one. If they've already done so, then very well. Hold off on buying Vallejo product. But if not, it's better to stay the course, to maintain the Union's bargaining power.
Dana - respect for your willingness to fully disclose your relationships w the manufacturers and how you obtained the products. This is why I subscribe.
I prefer the consistency of AK and game color for brush work.. but damn if Pro-Acryl don't just have more vibrant pigmentation for the same color paints.
@@blakearius i switched to a lot proacryl. the only issue i have with them is they like to be painted over a ultra matte surface. Anything with even a hint of semi gloss, like tamiya surface primer and the like, they are very hydrophobic with.
You unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension: a dimension of paint, a dimension of thinners, a dimension of primers. You're moving into a land of both shadow, highlights and mid-tones, of things and ideas. You've just crossed over into... the Disclosure Zone.
Thank you for the video! You asked for recomondations: I just primed for the first time with molotow one4all acrylic black. And i love it! I thinned with Tamya X-20A. Maybe thats part of the secret. But I think i will not go back to Vallejo Primer. Maybe give it a try! I just ordered white, gold and silver from Molotow and will try them over the weekend.
I bought the big AP paint set when they released their new line and I'm glad I did. I like being able to mix and match through their triads, and their metallics and washes are great.
Ive been really impressed by how much Army Painter has stepped up. I also found myself getting into Scale75 paints this year which I have enjoyed quite a bit.
Using a lot of Warpaints Fanatics this year. The difference to the old paints is staggering. Haven't got that many Monument Hobbies paints, but the bronze paint they have is my favourite metallic paint. As for Vallejo, well, there's some concerning news about how they treat their workers, so much so most of them are on strike at the time of comment. Sucks because their updated paints, even previously abysmal Model Color metallics were excellent. Until that situation is resolved, I'm not buying any Vallejo stuff in the meantime!
I had no clue about Vallejo! That would explain why my airbrush thinner took a while to arrive. Sounds like I'll need to really make this bottle last cuz I won't be buying from them until the strike is over, now that I know about it.
Oh this is unfortunate to hear.. due to the fact that I only use Vallejo for my Flames of war units.. do to the tie in with the game.. I use monument hobbies and two thin coats as well.. thankfully I have all the Vallejo colors I could need so maybe I'll just hold off on any further buys from them.. can I ask where you saw this before I jump down the google rabbit hole? Thanks!
@@randomtvninja Louise from Rogue Hobbies tweeted about it along with an article and the worker reps responded linking to their page. It's all over hobby sites and forums now.
Atom ammo by mig is my favorite this year. They are lacquer-like which is highly ideal for airbrush. They are hydroscopic like proacryl which you have to use a damp wet pallet rather than a fully saturated wet pallet. Ive already have to get a new bottle of warm flesh because I ran out 😅.
I've just bought the 2.0 speed paint starter set that came a brush, I assumed the brush that was on the box between the box and celothane was the free brush,I opened the box to find another brush so I now have a base coat brush and a speed paint brush 😊
Ms. Dana, I really appreciated your taking us into the Disclaimer Zone, your review transparency is most appreciated. I also want to applaud your focus on long term product reviews. Selection for daily use says more about a product than a quick feature review. PS. In my head you will always be the voice of Squarrrre Spaaaaace. You should be their permanent spokesperson.🙂
I love ProAcryl. I mostly started with them (and Speedpaints), thanks to them being so popular with people i follow. I am planning to grab some P3 when they hit retail though. Like you say, the satin finish can be nice in the right situation, one of those being the Artist Opus "drybrush" style I'd like to try more.
Great video Dana, I'm just coming of the rear end of a colors-i-dont-need shopping sprue myself, so it's not exactly useful to me, but somehow great entertainment none the less 🤩
P3 paints are made by the same people who made the original Citadel paint range in the eighties, early nineties. They also make paint for Wargames Foundry.
Dana, how do you keep your ARMY PAINTER paints from blowing out the spout when opening the cap? I love the paints but so much gets waisted when I ((((shake))) then open the cap! Sometimes it’s like mt.Vesuvius!!! I think PRO ACRYL nailed the bottle design 👌
I was at Michael's earlier today and they've got all the Golden SoFlat paints on clearance and the area was pretty empty. I know you spoke highly of them in the past, and I managed to get the high flow intro set for pretty cheap, but they probably won't carry it for much longer...
Ive used p3 paints for years and years. They are imo better then citadel. They were hard to come by when they canceled the line though. Reaper paints are what id suggest for starter kits. They tend to come with a few mini's too that you can practice on. My kit is mainly reaper now since p3 went away.
I'd love to start doing a drinking game or something where we try to predict the sponsor seqwhey ... but that requires watching with other people and I refuse to debase myself in such a way
I used to love the Vallejo metal color but have you tried them recently??? I have purchased 3 pots of gold from different sellers and they all have this awful desaturated silver look. Ive had to switch to other metallics since i can't seem to get ahold of anything that matches the original quality of that line 😢
Not going to lie. I pay zero attention to hobby paint reviews, there was such an overload of new paint lines and it just became static. I do not have infinite money either and would rather spend on the items to paint vs all the paint lines that are similar. Appreciate the time you took to show affiliation.
I have been interested in the Pro Acryl line, but I am wondering: I don't know the prices in the US, but you say they are a "little bit more expensive" than AP. here I am from they are almost literray double the price (43 local currency vs 22 local currency). Would you still think they are worth it at that price?
Great rundown Dana. Being frustrated with Kimeras QC, I bought a mixing set from every single hobby paint brand on the market and spent a month experimenting with them all. My conclusions? I sold every one of my hobby paints and went Golden heavy body. They have more single pigment offerings than anyone and knowing exactly what pigment I'm working with and therefore the exact finish and opacity has completely and utterly spoiled me. Having such an insane amount of control means I've never enjoyed the hobby more and have really improved as a painter to boot. I truly believe hobby paints obsession with being ever thinner, more opaque and matt is a net loss for the hobby. To make a mix more opaque, most dump a shit load of PW6 in making the final colour desaturated. Heavy matting agents make for such an unrealistically flat finish, glaze like crap and build up unwanted texture so easily. Then paints being super thin means you can't utilise a wet palette fully and so many techniques become unnecessarily difficult. Definitely more expensive initially, but I've never worked with such high quality paints and each 59ml tube will last me the rest of my life. I'd recommend everyone give a good heavy body mixing set a go. When it comes to feeling lazy and reproducing specific colours for consistent army painting, a 10ml mix of heavy body topped up with medium will fill a whole dropper bottle for me. If that's made from two tubes, each has 54ml of paint remaining and I just made a whole ass bottle of paint. My autism is showing so I'll stop typing now B)
I say, and have said for years: Do not let a review decide what paint you will use. Try a few paints in the line, usually one that is normally translucent (yellows or reds), one that is usually opaque (grays, desaturated blues, etc) and one that could be either one (greens, etc). In the end, use what is best for YOU and your style. Yes, listen to the opinions of others, but make your own decision after that.
in the last 2 years I ended up switching heavily to pro acryl, partly because I found their liquidity and pigmentation just pairs well with my own brushing habits and layering sensibilities it made me think a lot about the notion of finding paints that suit the painter, rather than adjusting one's self to a paint range
Informative video Dana, thank you. would you ever consider trying Cuttlefish Colors line by Cephalopod Studios? Distribution by Creature Caster I think. I would be curious to see how you rate them.Keep up the good work, looking forward to part 2
Every Tuber seems to cover the same old paint lines. Good stuff but maybe cover some rarer paints? TT Combat are my current fave's. Amazing on a wet palette. Great video. Keep up good work. Love the Pro Acryl paints and totally agree on Vallejo metallics. Vallejo Chrome ace for edge Highlights and spot highlights. PLEASE try the TT Combat paints
Availability would be the main issue. TTC paints are not easily available outside the UK currently. Same reason Two Thin Coats (the other TTC paint) is hard to recommend to people since its not as easily available as other brands. Its why I usually recommend what is easiest to get a hold of for newer paints, since needing to wait weeks to order a new color online kills momentum.
