In white out conditions heading on a compass bearing really needs the help of a second person who you send ahead on the bearing as far as they are visible. In good visibility as in this video you simply pick a feature on the right bearing and walk to it. I have been going up Kinder since I was a Scout Leader aged 32 and I did a solo wild camp there last summer aged 70. I have no intention of slowing down with my wild camping now I'm 71 and plan to do many more trips in 2024. Thoroughly enjoy watching your adventures Paul. 🙂
Hi Paul 50, no problem! Turned 70 this week and been planning to do my first wild camp for the past 5 years! (been vicariously wild camping courtesy of you, and Bushman!) Day after my 70th, did one of my best premier division table tennis performances. So life still in the old dogs. Blessed with a genetic ally slim physique though!
Thanks for the vid, I remember trying to find the true summit well. Not been able to get out for the last 18 months after becoming a carer for my mom so being able to watch a vid of the out doors is the next best thing. 7 Wainwright's to go, they will feel so good when I get chance to do them!
First Alex and now you, clearly need to get beyond the edge of Kinder. Views might not be much but the flat horizon gives a huge sky for star watching and looks to be plenty of flat space for a tent if a little exposed. Cheers for the reminder to get out and do stuff.
My dear Paul, I'm 70 years old this year. I'm still mountain biking around and loving it. Not so much in freezing weather but still doing it. Keep going. Life gets slower but still adventurous.
Wow, and here's me wondering "am I getting too old for this" at the ripe old age of 63 in June, still mountain biking and still enjoying it. You, my friend, are an inspiration.
@@andrewparton1551 thank you so much. It does help hearing from other folks of my age, and it's encouraging. Paul Messner inspires me all the time. Best wishes my friend. Keep up the great work.
We owe a lot to those Kinder Trespassers in 1932, and others such as the 1896 Winter Hill trespass where 10,000 people took part, and pioneers such as Ethel Ethel Haythornthwaite. We still have a long way to go until in England we enjoy the same #righttoroam as our friends in Scotland.
With the health journey you are on you are going to be fitter and stronger than you are now, achieving more then you did in your 40s! I turned 60 last year and this year I’m about to embark on my first ever 800+ mile hike! In any case 50 is the the new 40, so enjoy!
Paul I think its never say never mate I am 70 this year and hoping to do my first wild camp also ran my first London marathon at the age of 65 5hrs 30 mins not bad. Love the videos and your honesty mate keep them coming cheers Ray
Mother of god here's another one " I'm 70 and have done my first wild camp" so what, what in god's name did you have to overcome to go sleep in a tent. I'll think I'll stop reading other comments, drives me mad.
Mother of god your only 50 and the other bloke is 58. Stop mentioning and being guided by age. Yes be guided by how fit you are and the good thing about how fit you are, is in your hands Just get on with it and keep yourself in good shape.
As one of my mates says Only here for a visit Went to Nepal for 60th( trekking only ) Just want to be out more and more It so helps keep lifes pressures under control Thank you Paul for your time and commitment in putting these vids online
You are spot on Paul. Age is just a number after all, and provided we stay healthy and look after ourselves, growing older should be no barrier to ambition. I'll be celebrating my 61st birthday in a few weeks time and looking forward to hiking the West Highland Way in Spring.
As others have said Paul don't worry about being 50 , I'm 70 this year still doing 10 to 14 mile hill walks, off road cycling on my mountain bike, and lugging 18 kg of camping gear up steep hills as well as the odd mountain walk in Snowdonia. Yes it's a struggle at times but worth it.
When I walked the Wainwright C2C I just used a compass and map, it's always good to know how to use these tools:) Yes, make the most of your life, worry about the things you can change, the things you can't don't waste time worrying about. Me and a mate did our 1st hike and camp there last Sunday, was a fantastic experience and loved the area. Filming was a tad tough as the GoPros didn’t like the -5 but we got a video uploaded in the end. Congratulations on the 180k
Great to see you out in the chill. Thanks for sharing the views, too far for me to drive, but I walked a section of London canal this week and brewed up, inspired by you and your stormin cone adventures. Hope the plague is defeated now!
I'm also turning 50 this year! I've got plenty of ideas for what I want to do in the second part of my life- mountains to climb, long-distance walks to hike, wild camps and the like. Anyway, time to get off the sofa and get out for a walk.
I agree with you, the journey is the thing for me too. Only been up Kinder once (not where you got to), via Edale - Crowden Clough and at 67 years old (when I did it) and not that fit, it was quite tough. I will be 74 this year and aim for what you have just done, hopefully this year.
Age is merely a number. I turn 71 this year and still manage a hike at least once a week . It keeps both body and mind active and can only help your health issues. Keep going I really enjoy your videos
Another cracking video Paul! I grew up with Kinder and the Dark Peak as my playground! Absolutely love the place! It fired my love for the outdoors and the adventure of the journey. Turned 50 last year so to mark it, I went over to Wales and climbed the north ridge of Tryfan! Tapping the rocks at the top was such a small piece of the journey! The fun was in the planning, getting the kit together, even the drive up there to begin the climb! It’s always about the journey!
I started wild camping last year after watching one of your videos Paul, Ive camped a lot in the past but never done the wild bit. My third camp was at Edale Rocks and Ive fallen in love with the place - I get over to Derbyshire (from Wakefield) whenever I can. 50? Age is a number... Im 59 next and still feel like Im 16! (certainly in my head!) Thanks for another great video!
Totally agree, for me it's all about the journey not so much the destination. I'm 58 and usually solo hike/camp in the Welsh Mountains but this year is Peak District year so taking inspiration from you and S. Sarah. B. Take care, see you in the Peaks 🙂

Paul you're so right ✅ 👏 about getting out and experiencing the journey. At 70plus years I yielded much of my life to other's needs. He's a 👍 good sport so he'll get the hang of it in due time...and to bring himself a good book (laughs wildly now) if he doesn't. 😉 Bases Covered!
A lot of armchair generals here, Paul. Mentioning declination or grid to mag adjustments. 1. This is the UK and when I was in the Army in the late 90's /00 the adjustments were less than 2 mil. Combined with short pacing ways, it was nothing. Remember, though, if you want to take a bearing from Grid to Mag = Add and if you take a Mag bearing to a Map - mag to grid - get rid 😊 but in the Uk variations are minimal. Otherwise, check your map and adjust your compass. Finally, you can do an auto adjustment on compass bezels with the little gromit screw located on the underside of most quality compasses
as you probably know, that add and rid will be on their head soon as the declinations go the other way of 0. Im sure people are already working out good mnemonics for the UK.
Well I'm 52 next month and just started this hiking / camping adventure , I'd say just a number but I suffer from bad knees so see where this leads , keep up the videos
Age is just a number Paul. Have a watch at Charlie McCartney and his brother on here. Like a pair of machines, just completed their 5th round of Munro’s. It’s not for everyone but it shows us over 50s can still achieve good stuff.
Enjoyed the video very much. One of my favourite haunts - in fact it was my first mountain when I was 11. Subsequently climbed it many a time and lots of times with my scouts as a scout ML. It’s great for teaching navigation. They all appreciate being able to navigate with a compass - there are so few obvious landmarks. We regularly used the leapfrogging technique with fantastic results over 2-3 miles. Unfortunately my knees have now given up so can’t do it anymore. I did make it to 69 though so had a good innings. Keep the videos coming please.
We went to the true summit in 2019. It was just a small stick stuck in the ground. The fog was coming in and out when we did it. You definitely need a map and compass. People have disputed this with me in the past, saying it's easy to find, not the first time you do it it isn't. Great video 👍🏻 as expected.. Paul I'm 57 this year.. will you stop going on about turning 50, it's not the end of the world. 😂
I did a challenge a couple of weeks back, bagging the highest 3 peaks in the peak district in under 10 hours, Kinder Scout was the first and even with GPS on my phone it was a headache mate, paths are non existent to the true summit, I can see why people think Kinder Low is the highest point with the nice trig point, this video makes me realise that i need to learn map reading as well. Great video Paul👌
Thankyou for confirming the summit, I was up there a couple of weeks ago for sunrise and wasn't entirely sure. Takes me 2 hours to get to edale from a very flat lincolnshire, and i leave the house about 4am to try and ensure a quite hike. Maybe wild camping is for me, you've got a new subscriber.
Awesome video Paul and well done on reaching 180k subs, you deserve it and it's obvious for all to see that you put the work in. I will catch you up one day. Personally I love landscapes like the true summit of kinder more than epic views and mountains, I just feel at one with nature in barron environments. Get well soon mate, Stu.
50+ here and any day out on the trail is a good day, no matter the distance. This year I have plans for doing a full Mammoth march. Did 55 km last year in 9h, so age is just a number. Great view btw! We could use some of that here in Denmark...
That was a question on a gameshow the other week, "What was the first National Park in England"? I got it wrong like a 🐓 🤣 You make an extremely valid point towards the end of the video about getting older. We're not all supposed to follow our Plan A in life. I always wanted to play music but as I'm getting older: I'm finding that I get far more benefit from being outdoors, camping or long-distance-walking than I ever have from the music. In fact: I sometimes wonder if the music is actually good for me or if it's dredging up demons that should best be left to lie. You do get a massive dopamine hit from playing but it's not the same as the total cleansing you get from absorbing the natural environment. Sure we might not be doing what our younger selves seen as Plan A but we're all extremely lucky to be able to siphon the amount of joy we get out of what surrounds us. That was a bit deep, sorry. I'll go back to being cynical, sarcastic and Scottish 😂
Nice video, I was so hoping to get out again and then I hurt my foot at work. Probably another 3-4 weeks before it's healed, so stuck on the sofa for now. My rucksacks sat ready and packed on the other sofa to remind me
Congrats in advance on the half century Paul. What a cracking day to get out and walk - sometimes the thought of the effort required to get the boots on and go can mean you miss those rare perfect moments. Nice one!
Yep. You never know what can happen. I was really fit at age 50 (non drinker, exercise and proper diet) Got bit by a Tick. Life changed forever. You just never know 🤷♂️
Nice to see you out Paul. Those skies, just makes you feel so alive. My brothers not far from you, he lives in Buxton, I really need to come up and explore, might even see a certain Paul Messner if I'm lucky eh. lol. Its funny hearing you mention coming up to 50. My youngest has just turned 50. As you get older you see the youngster coming up behind you mentioning age, then you realise they are 20 years younger than yourself in my case. To me 50 is so young but it's all relative. I can remember being 50 and thinking "Wow I'm halfway". I've always known I'm going to see 100 for some reason, hopefully it comes true.. I'm edging closer as we all are but have no interest in slowing up. As you say you have to adjust what you do but it doesn't mean you can't set goals for the future. I had a health scare a few years back, which I thought was going to put me in a wheelchair for the rest of my days, thankfully I'm getting over it. Like you I love the outdoors and making sure I can continue is my number one priority and I'll do anything to help my body stay able to cope. Watching your videos has helped me no end and I'm sure I'm not alone, you've definitely inspired me to get out and even get in a camping, although via bike, my wife is even up for trying it now, so thank you Paul. Lastly look after that body Paul, anyway you can. Diet is 100% of it, take it from me. Take care my friend and hope you all get those colds gone. All the best. G
I totally agree that lands like the place you were should be available for everyone. I wish everyman's rights that we have in Finland (other countries in Nordics have it too I think). It would do campers and nature enthusiasts good if these rights would spread out to every country 😄🌲🍂
The problem with giving public these rights in Britain, is that we have lots of idiots here, along with a fair portion of the population being entitled. I'd love to have it, but it would come at a cost.
Well said Paul, I will be 76 next week but my mind says 26. still try to get into the hill as much as I can, take longer (ok a lot longer) but I still enjoy it. What boots did you have on, please ? ATB AND STAY YOUNG
If you look at the GPS, the pile of stones isnt actually the highest point, its about twenty feet away on an unmarked bit of the moor. It fools lots of people!
Nice one Paul, I was back on Kinder Saturday just gone after many years absence thanks to you and solo Sarah. I'll be 53 this year and have accumulated a fair bit of extra baggage around the midriff, so I'm glad I took the metaphorical kick up the backside your videos gave me 👍😁 new compass is being ordered and a waterproof map for my next trip up. Keep making the videos and I'm sure you'll reach your goal soon enough, great content 👍⛺👏👏 ATB Andy
Paul - I just turned 50 last week, was just another day mate! Keep doing what you enjoy.......I also have some Vivo (magna forest esc) that have the same soles as your boots, they are great but the one massive gripe I have is they have worn out massively quickly. Your boots are new so you won't have noticed yet but mine wore out in (way) less than a year - and given the price point for Vivo I was not mega happy. Am going to try their resoling service though, if the quality is as good as new then that will take the bite out of it, otherwise I will be looking for another zero drop boot but with a Vibram sole!
Although a big part of the fun for me when I reach the top is to set my stove up I do sometimes just take a flask like yours. I have hot choc in that one and I have the food flask variant that I put a nice hot meal in for those chilly summits. I'm older than you and for various reasons I didn't get out much last year but this year I'm going to be out as much as possible. I live in the Lake District so makes it easier.
I tried to find the summit in summer and was so so boggy! Idea: everyone who finds the summit add a stone so becomes more visible! It's so historic with the mass trespass.
I loved this video Paul.. I love the honesty with struggles and motivation, as we all suffer with it, whatever your goals and fitness level. Just getting out the door can be the hardest part sometimes.. and I really hope you grow a mullet in 2024. Never say never 😂
50 is the new 40, it’s not old . It’s definitely use it or use . Well done. Congratulations on the very impressive subs figures and I’m sure the 200k will be achieved within your target period 👍
Age 54 and struggle getting my arse of the sofa, I used to love going walking, yes my knee is buggered but I struggle with low mood got all the intention but easily swayed to not doing stuff because of one thing or another. I find myself saying “ it must be easy to be motivated if you live near views like that” but to be honest there are great places here in the flat lands of East Anglia.
Signpost Quotes from todays video - "Reflexes!! Still got it 💪. 50 this year you know." "Got the whole place to myself! Apart from that bloody aeroplane up above." "And then you've got the challenges of the route up... the slippy rocks, the getting out of breath, you're out of shape, you not being very well. So I have reached the top. Tapped a pile of rocks. Thats the destination bit, isn't it.And now I have got to think about getting down! " "Nowadays, I am a firm believer of - You can be whatever You wanna be(within reason)." "It might get harder to get up the hills, it might take a little bit longer, but we’re only here once aren’t we. Gotta make the most of your life!" "If I see you next time, I made it down." - Paul Messner
2:38 do you mean there's 30-40 miles of paths on/around Kinder? Because encircling the full plateau perimeter path (including the to and from portion from various parking spots) is less than 18 miles 🤔
Is it not just the highest point of the range… whether be the mountain range. / pennine range./ peak ranges./ hill ranges./ As a whole of the central divide….its a long way to choose from thats for sure.
Paul, I absolutely loved this philosophical talk and even though the area was mostly plain, it was still beautiful. Please take care of yourselves and add plenty of Zinc, Elderberry and Vitamin C. I don't know if England has Vicks salve but its an old remedy here and I put it EVERYWHERE! Do you have plans to check out the new Nemo Extreme pad? It's supposed to be the warmest now with an R value of 8.5. It should keep you toasty on a winters night wildcamp.

Congratulations. It looks nice up there today.
Cracking day for it!!! Nice story too, hard to imagine it was less than 100 years ago.
Loved the video. 100% agree with your little monologue at the end. Life doesn’t finish because your getting older
Your just a "babbey" at 50. Keep loving what you do and doing what you love!
Your still young I'm 65 this year
Did Ben nevis for the 5th time last year another great clip
Great video. I hope you feel better soon
50+ here and any day out on the trail is a good day, no matter the distance. This year I have plans for doing a full Mammoth march. Did 55 km last year in 9h, so age is just a number.
Great view btw! We could use some of that here in Denmark...
I couldn´t agree with you more. The journey is the goal, not the destination.
Lovely scenic views wish I was there.
That was a question on a gameshow the other week,
"What was the first National Park in England"?
I got it wrong like a 🐓
🤣
You make an extremely valid point towards the end of the video about getting older.
It was just a stick last time I went. Love it there. Great vid Paul.
Nice one!
Brilliant video. Going to have to go to the true summit now. Learn something new everyday
Yep. You never know what can happen. I was really fit at age 50 (non drinker, exercise and proper diet)
Got bit by a Tick.
Paul, my target this year is to do more walks/camps without the car and outside my native Northumberland. 52 BTW..
@@Johnnymagnet92That's no excuse for not giving the public access.
@@garyboyle695 It's a valid reason
Well said Paul, I will be 76 next week but my mind says 26. still try to get into the hill as much as I can, take longer (ok a lot longer) but I still enjoy it. What boots did you have on, please ? ATB AND STAY YOUNG
Nice little film Paul, great to see you out.
Best wishes to you and jo 👍
Not even been up kinder scout itself yet …. But when I do I’ll defo make sure I touch them rocks at the summit 👍🏼👌🏼
If you look at the GPS, the pile of stones isnt actually the highest point, its about twenty feet away on an unmarked bit of the moor. It fools lots of people!
I think we’ve had the same lurgy. Completely wiped out and a long lingering sore throat. Sick of coughing!!🙄. Roll on summer.
Good vid, beautiful place for a day hike. Pace yourself. I do.
Another informative video. Thanks. Like you I have to get out there whatever the weather. See you on the next one. Regards Gary
Keep making the videos and I'm sure you'll reach your goal soon enough, great content 👍⛺👏👏
ATB Andy
Brilliant as ever Paul thank you!
50...I can just about remember that...62 for me...years of walking left for me
I tried to find the summit in summer and was so so boggy!
Never say never 😂
That was a milky tea Mr Messner 🙂 I've been to Kinder Scout many times but like you say, I've never been to the actual summit - one for the list now.
50 is the new 40, it’s not old . It’s definitely use it or use . Well done. Congratulations on the very impressive subs figures and I’m sure the 200k will be achieved within your target period 👍
Right on cheers mate 👍 ❤from Michigan
Snapping snot icicles off one's nostrils is what it's all about.
Great wee adventure; doesn't always have to involve camping.
Tack, Paul
Great vid Paul! Was up there today, no camp mind but cracking day out
That was a pro vid mate. We’ve had the plague too. Well done for getting out there.
Signpost Quotes from todays video -
"Reflexes!! Still got it 💪. 50 this year you know."
"Got the whole place to myself! Apart from that bloody aeroplane up above."
"And then you've got the challenges of the route up... the slippy rocks, the getting out of breath, you're out of shape, you not being very well. So I have reached the top. Tapped a pile of rocks. Thats the destination bit, isn't it.And now I have got to think about getting down! "
"Nowadays, I am a firm believer of - You can be whatever You wanna be(within reason)."
"I am never gonna run a 10 second 100 meters. I am never gonna have a mullet... but you know, I'll live."
"It might get harder to get up the hills, it might take a little bit longer, but we’re only here once aren’t we. Gotta make the most of your life!"
"If I see you next time, I made it down."
- Paul Messner
I’ve waited a week for this 🎉🎉🎉
Hopefully one day you have a comp. open to international viewers.
2:38 do you mean there's 30-40 miles of paths on/around Kinder? Because encircling the full plateau perimeter path (including the to and from portion from various parking spots) is less than 18 miles 🤔
Grid to mag = Add
Mag to grid = Get rid
Isn’t that life it’s not the destination ,it’s the journey
I thought that Paul had sent me an email teaching how to read maps backwards but i found out it was spam !
Is it not just the highest point of the range… whether be the mountain range. / pennine range./
peak ranges./ hill ranges./ As a whole of the central divide….its a long way to choose from thats for sure.
It should keep you toasty on a winters night wildcamp.
they say life starts at 50!
chinese proverb-
young man has speed, old man has wisdom, which one will catch the fish?
english proverb-
pay your son to paint your house while you take a woodland walk!
Good result Paul. Getting out when you’re not that well. Bad result for our team though. Again.
Oldskool thermos eh. I never leave home without it in this weather.
Nice video and view. Cheers from Norway ❄️👍
