He invented the inverted detective story (a crime fiction in which the commission of the crime is described at the beginning, usually including the identity of the perpetrator, with the story then describing the detective's attempt to solve the mystery). Roberts said that this invention was Freeman's most noticeable contribution to detective fiction. Freeman used some of his early experiences as a colonial surgeon in his novels. Many of the Dr. Thorndyke stories involve genuine, but sometimes arcane, points of scientific knowledge, from areas such as tropical medicine, metallurgy and toxicology.
Saturday Night Theatre was a long-running radio drama strand on BBC Radio 4. The strand showcased feature-length, middle-brow single plays on Saturday evenings for more than 50 years, having been launched in April 1943. The plays featured in the strand included stage plays, book adaptations and original dramatisations. For most of its history, programmes ran for 90 minutes and were largely entertainment-centred, such as thrillers, comedies and mysteries. (Wikipedia)

Thoroughly enjoyed this play, well worth the listening.
My second time listening to this wonderful play. Brilliant actors and a terrific story. Thank you.

A fine story, excellently performed. It's wonderful of the folks at Chesterton Radio posting these gems for our listening pleasure. Thank you.
Marvellous, oh what a tangled web we weave through no fault of our own, many thanks xx
Excellent.. Superbly written
Great story with an unusual conclusion. The great think about radio is we use our imagination to picture the events and characters.
Kept me anxious right up to the last word. Fantastic story.
The ending is simply perfect! Thank you so much for your uploads!
Wonderful story. The Doctor was a truly kind and wonderful man. Great ending. Thank you.
A lovely story and kept me entertained as I sewed my patchwork quilt. 🏴
Can never go wrong listening Peter Coke! Thank you
It made me cry a little with relief at the happy ending. Great play.
Marvellous ! What voices! What diction ! And a plot as ingenious as any
of Dame Agathas. In fact , she may have even borrowed some elements
of it ? Well worth looking out for Dr Thorndyke books in charity shops !
Intelligent, civilized entertainment of highest order.
PS. Admittedly there are gaping
holes in plot but ....who cares ?!?

Oh I miss the days you could buy a mummy for a pound & take it home on the roof of a taxi 😏
Lolol

Or an ancient sundial for £1 which would be worth thousands today. Oh those were the days!
Thank you for taking the time to upload these wonderful radio dramas. 😀
Very good indeed!
Brilliant and beautifully touching. Thank you
Fantastic story brought tears to my eyes! What a lovely ending ❤️🥰
Beautiful story!
Peter Coke in some other rôle than the hackneyed Paul Temple, showing some class. A beautifully wrought tale.
Lovely beautiful story
Thanks for the download. Great drama x
Excellent. Thank you. 👌💕
Peter Coke is a sublime actor!
Loved loved that..Thank you once again for these marvellous plays. I get transported to another time. Love from South Africa. 😘

Great story, thank you.
Really enjoyed that 👍
Excellent drama. Thank you for this download during covid-19 pandemic.
Outstanding in every way!
I really enjoyed this, it was like a fairytale and it made me feel happy. Thank you 😊
Got to love it when a career criminal calls someone a "whippersnapper" during a fight!
Justice would seem to have been done.
An excellent play - however I'm concerned that the coroner did not catch on - it's a worry - given the age of the bones would have differed considerably.....
redemption is a beautiful thing!
Wonderful and unexpected ending. Nice that there was a happy ending for a change.
A play adapted by MOLLIE HARDWICK from the novel by R. AUSTIN FREEMAN with Anthony Nicholls and Peter Coke
Mr. Pottermack led a pleasant life, with his garden, his hobbies, and his friend Alice. But over it lay the shadow of a sundial. with Stephen Thorne
Pianist, VIOLA TUNNARD
Produced by BETTY DAVIES
Broadcast on September 14. 1963
Such a shame that Molly Hardwick's other Thorndyke adaptation for Saturday Night Theatre seems to be missing 🙁 It was 'Corpse In The Case' (9th June 1962) and based on Dr Thorndyke Intervenes..
This is tremendous though..
My second listening. This Yank has learned that second listening using earbuds reveal nuances and vocabulary missed the first time around.
Please, please people stop putting up spoilers.
Does this one feature Peter Coke? It sounds like him. Ah, goggled, and yes it is Peter Coke as Mr. Pottermack.
He has a very distinctive voice, doesn't he?

You goggle too? Google’s too stupid. 😉
And Anthony Nicholls - of cult
60s. TV series - The Champions..!
👏👏🇬🇧
🌟♥️👍
Dental records were never requested and the finger nails of the mummy bore evidence of mummification.
The inquest shaped the outcome of the inquiry based on acceptable evidence.
I think I hv listened to too many of these wonderful Brit
crime stories that I attempt to solve cases!
Question. Why is the act of auctioning mortal remains is not seen as a crime of sacrilege at best and the mistreatment of mortal remains in the least.
These ancient peoples should be left in eternal rest.
Perhaps you should attempt a murder mystery of your own ?
( Fictional I hasten to add..! )
Philip HEMA, This is fiction, but would you complain about the moving of a graveyard to build on, or an archialogoical dig in ancient cemeteries, or divers removing artifacts from sunken vessels declared a graveyard. I think even now
let alone 60 years ago this is not so strange, for collectors/scientists.
you realise this is not a documentary ? merely fiction dear boy, merely fiction.
Open all hours... didn't bring me here
