Published in 1931, it is one of the earliest novels to feature Inspector Maigret in the role of the chief police investigator. the AI image is post-Great War -- the book was from before
The great war is the first world war, 1914-18. The book written in 1931 so a few years before the second world war 1939-1945 (I'm British hence the dating), which makes the picture pretty well dated. Sorry to be picky but I was a little taken aback at your dating of the great war.

There is something that doesn't quite 'gel' with a Continental detective dealing with mostly ordinary class crime in a Continental setting.
Lacks a certain ... je ne sais pas, in the absence of an English setting.

At least the speakers try to add some (pronouciation) level on top of the written script.
