Supermotos are criminally underrated in the UK.
This will force KTM to update the 690 and that is a good thing!

I own an Smcr and the Ducati really doesn't excite me that much, especially for the cost. I will have to have a spin on one and see what I think. I feel like the electronics are the main sellpoint to try and ease you into sumo riding, especially with the slide control, but for me its far too expensive for a bike that lets face it, if you ride it properly like a sumo you will slide it down the tarmac at some point. I also think that 77hp at the loss of some torque was purely to say they make the most hp 😂. I love the savage nature of the 690, it is out the crate a weapon once you bin the emissions crap and I just can't see the Ducati topping it, it seems like more of a poser bike to me. Loving your opinion though, I don't think we will get a proper match until it gets a map and the emissions crap removing. Looking forward to hopefully seeing that from you in the future chops :D

I tried one a couple of weeks back and loved it.
It's the first 'motard' style bike I've ever ridden and the weather was tipping down, but the bike still gave me so much confidence in the twisties. I couldn't get my head around how light it felt. Induction noise was pretty cool. And as you said Chopsy, the engine was mega impressive in 20mph zones. Third gear riding wasn't a problem.
Good crack on those back roads for sure.

  • @Teleolution

I have a modded 2014 690 SMCR 73HP/70HP measured on two dynos and I thought this bike might tempt me to change, but much as I like it, the primal urge to buy the new bike isn’t there. I absolutely love my SMCR. In fact, I’m looking forward to meeting one of these Ducatis in the road to see what it can do.

Super excited about this bike and like others have mentioned, I've been waiting for your review knowing you're a person that enjoys the supermoto platform. I wanted to point out that the lack of bottom end torque is also caused by the oversquare design of the super quadro engine (massive piston with very short stroke). Panigale's and Streetfighter V2 suffer from this as well, they're dull on the low end but past 6-7k rpm they really wake up

Already sold my 701 sm which I loved, but I tried the 698 & immediately knew it was a great bike, the chassis much better than the 701 & the electronics far superior. Doesn't have the low down torque of the husky have to rev it out a bit more but with that sportier chassis works really well. So already ordered mine & should have it in a couple of weeks then of to my place in S pain, so today going to Spain on my Triumph 765 rs. Nice one Chopsy. If it’s taken from the old big L twin then perhaps it also has the same characteristics, only halved, plus additional equipment to meet Euro5, which the old engine didn’t need to meet. So power and peak torque will be higher in the rev range whilst having the stuff to choke the engine to meet the current emission standards. So a tune and freer flowing system from intake to exhaust will make a difference, just be wary that you will be tossing the warranty into the garbage bin.

"certainly looks better," huh? Must be Ducati vision. It looks far too familiar to me to claim it's a vast improvement visually. Much like the KTM, Husqvarna and Gas Gas supermotos it looks like an awesome and it does seem like Ducati has improved upon an already excellent hooligan bike but it's a bit of a stretch to me to say this is somehow beautiful and the smcr isn't.

I feel like on the tuning side of things performance mods will definitely help - especially air box mods - but I don't think it will change the fact that it is very top endy. My WR250X has the same issue - it has very little torque down low, but it has a very high redline and that's where it makes it's power. Not sure if it's related but like the Mono engine being supersport derived, the WR's engine is based on the R1 block so maybe theres a theme...

If you are toying between one of these and an SMCR let me give you some advice. Buy one of these. I never thought I'd be looking at Italians for better reliability or customer service but they can't possibly do worse than KTM. I'm just about to scrap my 2020 SMCR, bought new, with less than 2500miles on the clock, due to a cracked cylinder head, broken head bolt, absolutely atrocious (to the point of being dangerous) gearbox, and even worse dealer network. The gearbox issue is a widespread problem that you won't find many KTM fanboys...KTM or their dealers admit. I suspect the engine problems aren't just a one-off either seeing as I saw another 2020 bike being broken with a 'blown engine' while researching how much I'll get for the parts from mine. As for the dealers. It spent 2 summers awaiting repairs and communication, both times, were unbelievable. One involved a 120-mile round trip to see them face to face after weeks of nobody returning calls.

    • @churchofbrap876
      @churchofbrap876 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Your experience certainly sucks. But my 21 SMCR has been problem free so far and it's one of my favorite bikes. Ducati is giving the Hyper a 2 yr warranty though, and longer service intervals, so it has the edge there.

I feel like it's purely made to beat the 690 SMC R just barely. The 698 is a tad better overall. Ducati knew not to deviate too much from the supermoto realm as they already got the hypermotard. It's an overall good attempt by Ducati to enter this supermoto space.

      I agree 100%. Nothing revolutionary.
regarding power, its got a few hp on top, but 10Nm less. People have been getting 85whp from the KTMs for years now with some light tuninge.
And the have identical weight, but a much higher price. Was expecting to want one, but I don’t.

@@Rossithailand On the motor. You can get 80 wheel hp from the 690/701s dead easy, even 72whp with Husqvarns own kit, and its been that way for years.
In stock form its a couple of horses more that the 701, but nearly 10Nm down. Thats why this does not have the same low-end punch out of corners. An observation the owners are pretty honest about:
«I have a 698 and I have had a couple of KTM 690s. Indeed the Ducati has noticeably less low end grunt, though it spins up quickly. I’ll install a Termi exhaust in about a month when it arrives.»

Saw the standard one at the dealer a couple of weeks ago (US). Honestly, I don't see $13k sitting there. But the KTM/Husky/GasGas cost nearly the same and are equally overpriced IMO.
But just imagine if they put that in a very lightweight sportbike, built to a price and made in Asia. A "premium starter bike" kind of thing.
Or eventually they will have a rally-ish version using that engine. The supermoto just seems to have limited appeal.
