The paid quests was planned in advance, regardless of what Todd says. In the older "May Update" vid they released, you can see all the bounty quests they had planned in the background. In their "June Update" vid, a dev said that more of the bounty quests are coming as part of "Creations" aka their cash shop.
Allowing for mods to be installed on consoles, or making an in-game mod launcher to help people just install mods and play, is a big convenience. Sure I know how to set up a nexus account and get mods from Nexus, it sure is easy to just install mods from within the game, and no one's talking about that. This menu will help the game outlast other games released this year.
@@kay94 Selling something =/= giving back to the community, setting up a storefront so you can turn other people's work into revenue, because you can coat it in 'convenience' for some, IS NOT GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY. I think paid mods are a good thing, overall, I'm not mad when mod makers would like to get paid, I'm mad Bethesda takes a cut while acting like they're doing some good community service, when at the core of it they only care about it being a source of revenue.
@@sazjnk95 So you expect them to pay modders to make content for their game while they make nothing? I hate to break it to you, but video game companies need to worry about way more other than their fans, especially one like Bethesda who is owned by two bigger and much more greedy companies.
"Premium cosmetics" shouldn't exist in a buy to play single player game. The only justification for microtransactions is an online free to play or buy to play but on a server games. In other words if there is an ongoing cost in running the game the company NEEDS to get paid but something like a Fallout or Starfield, it's just corpo greed.
This is why i love the random timings of the universe coming together and releasing BG3 within months of Starfield. Todd finally got compared and contrasted against a good game that put time, enthusiasm, effort and love into it. Todd got weighed, measured, and was shown up for the mediocre grifter that he and Pete Hines have become.
The sad thing is, when you look back on it, if BG3 had kept the initial September release date to iron out some things, it probably would've done just fine overall. Yeah, the initial release of both games could make things more competitive, but BG3 would've still come out on top full stop. It'd probably be even better with the extra month. Don't get me wrong, I understand why Larian decided to jump ahead by a month, and I'm stoked the game succeeded, which makes the 20/20 hindsight feel redundant, but I think it's still worth thinking about.
I want so badly for someone to just straight up ask Todd, "Can you explain how it came to be that, despite your relentless hype and enthusiasm for the project, Starfield is your least well received game ever?", to his face. I'd love to see him try to squirm his way out of that one.
World of Warcraft's Celestial Steed was $25 at launch, not $15. I remember them saying they sold 1,000,000 of them the first DAY, meaning they made $25 million in one day off that store mount! It was at that point I realized what a monster I'd helped add to by buying one, and it is the last Blizzard store cosmetic I ever paid for.
Yeh man that's why they do not teach kids math and percentages anymore, when you start doing the math on A LOT OF THINGS in society, especially relevant to the business world, do not add up correctly
Bethesda is one of the weirdest game developers out there. They can craft some amazing small scale stories in their world with cool little details. Then do some great story lines with far harbor, the UC vanguard and crimson fleet quests that with some more time in the kitchen to build out the characters and fix plot holes could easily stand as a full game narrative in it of itself. However then shoot themselves in the foot with so many bad quality of life issues and perplexing decisions that have me thinking they are a bunch of headless chickens running around in circles.
We have to remember that bethesda did not make Fallout 1 and 2, they acquired license to make a game with the fallout ip in 2004 and then bought the ip in 2007. So no one at bethesda really has anything to do with fallout 1 and 2 and probably have zero clue how to make a game in that top down style and if they tried to do a remake in their first person style it just wouldn't be the same games.
They could just get another studio to make it for them. MS owns inXile Entertainment who made the new Wasteland games. I bet they could do a pretty good job of remaking FO 1 and 2.
@@Nodiee1 That really depends on how much Xbox top management sees in the value of fallout 1 and 2 remakes/remasters. Afterall xbox studio current set up is kinda odd with both zenimax and ABK currently having a completely separate management to the rest of Xbox. Also bet there is a bunch of office politics nonsense between the different sections where they don't share toys between them like ip and engine tools they built
One of the problems is that people continue to moan and complain that Bethesda didn't make the original games as if they're kidnappers holding the franchise for ransom. It's ok for them to be critical, but they really need to move on from that and provide more useful feedback. These day people have played 3, 4, Morrowind, Skyrim and probably enjoyed some of them. But then they're also the same people regurgitating the same nonsense about New Vegas, or Todd Howard being jealous of it or some such. People of the community really need to have an original thought of their own if they want to see the franchise improve. Odds are most of them have never played the original games and are just complaining about it because everyone else they know is. Bandwagoning without adding anything useful is creating more of a problem than a bad studio ever will. It dilutes the voices that could actually help the industry. This is something I hope people become aware of.
The only truely great fallout game made whilst they owned the ip wasnt even made by them. If they did remake those games, it will either be mediocre or terrible. Skyrim was lightning in a bottle and new vegas was because it wasnt them
I would point out that for creation store content, a cumulative 1.5 mil is pretty small part of the original game sale volume. While that certainly still means profit for Bethesda, also consider how many people that means tried the original content and left. EDIT: I'd also counterpoint what Josh Sawyer said with similarly opposing anecdotes from Nate Purkeypile, another dev who used to work at Bethesda. Their statement was that while the engine makes what it was expressly built for easy to do, a lot of things were difficult to expand upon. This was something corroborated by even Josh Sawyer himself during interviews about developing facets of New Vegas, like the limitations imposed on trying to make the various tribes in Honest Hearts and inability to add diversity to the NPCs without revisions they couldn't afford to do.
@@zoldlen883 You mean the interview with Sawyer, who only ever used Creation to work on NV? Then you mean to say it was an L take to use him in the video as well? Or are you simply looking for confirmation bias?

@@kay94Its not that i dont think Console Players should have access to mods. I dont think they should be paid. Period. If i want to pay a mod dev ill paypal, kofi, or patreon the dev. Also $10 for a *single* *shitty* quest is outrageous. (Yes it is only 700 credits but the smallest pack you can buy that has enough credits is $10) The game is in a terrible state and instead of fixing the fundamental problems (bad narrative, boring exploration, and a useless, unfun outpost system hanging off like a vestigial limb) Bethesda is more concerned about nickel and diming players to milk them for all theyre worth. Id rather go back and play Skyrim or Morrowind than Starfield right now.
@@thegamedoctor1457 I enjoyed the game. I am not paying for any mod, as I don't see how it's forced upon me. It is not at all. If you didn't enjoy the game I can see how you'd like them to fix things instead of this BUT, almost no other company especially for AAA games allows mods on consoles. They want you to pay for every single Assassins Creed and COD rather than giving you the ability to download FREE content. Working to bring mods on consoles SHOULD be standard for most games, but they don't because they want you to buy their next title instead of you having the option to download infinite free content and play the same game for years and years. Bethesda instead chose to do it and I don't care if they charge for some mods to recoup that cost as long as people can keep making mods for free and console players downloading free content. I really don't get the outrage. Suddenly a "mediocre" game has a modding community on consoles which will only bring more worth out of your 60 dollars and will allow all people who own it to keep playing and playing and playing new content that you don't even have to pay for and you're complaining. I WISH i had the option to download free content for Elden Ring but instead i'm forced to wait 2 years for an official DLC that costs 30 dollars. With Starfield I don't even have to wait for bethesda to release a DLC when I can just grab whatever free mission people will build. And you're all outraged over a $7 mission. Just do whatever you do in real life when you see something that isn't worth it, don't buy it and move on. I am not gonna pay for any mod and I'm on PC so this doesn't affect me TO THE SLIGHTEST, but I get that Bethesda wants to recoup some money for bringing mods to console when no other company does it. You all are just a hive mind, instead of actually thinking WHO this benefits more(the player or bethesda) you're outraged over a $7 mission that you don't even have to buy, you're not forced to buy it and you even claim it's not worth it, so what's the big deal? Just download the free missions which are better.
That has yet to stop people from buying Bethesda's stuff. It is not like starfield was their first major backlash. They have screwed around since skyrim came out, and everything they do is still super successful. i think the reason that alot of people are going back to skyrim and fallout, is BECAUSE Bethsda doesnt give us more. every time they update those games to "give us more" aka more creation club slop. they break our mods, or tham game in the case of fallout 4 recently. we go back to try new builds with diffrent mods, or diffrent builds with our current mods. or like skyrim, we try to mod it so unarmed is a viable route to go, aka trying to fix things left behind by bethsda. So, at this point bethsda should just make the games, make sure its a complete game, make a story DLC with worth while content, and then just relase the game to the mod makers. not this ideer of constant support, like its a live service. its a singeplayer game, let it be a single player game.

LOL, I love how you shills keep pushing that fantasy, like the bulk of the money you pay for the mods isn't going straight into the pockets of Bethesda. Its almost like modders-unlike Bethesda-are motivated by something more than money.
Todd is one of the least trustworthy/most greedy public facing game execs out there. I've just ignored everything he says since he openly said he needed to find a way to monetize the people who dump thousands of hours replaying Bethesdas games before revealing paid mods.
There was already a paid mod for Skyrim that added guns with a quest to get it. That sounds like a cheap excuse again. What they want is what we got but with out the bad reviews.
Tod Howard has always given me weird vibes. Ever since his Skyrim interviews it almost felt like he was moving more and more towards monitization rather than fun gameplay direction. Like I want to like him but he has never given me a reason. Everytime he talks its like he is walking on egg shells.
He's changed, he went from walking on egg shells to straight up reptilian. In this interview he's like Zucc if he could talk smoothly to sell you his snake oil
Todd is known to be a huge fan of barbarian gameplay and despises magic. Easy to see why the College of Winterhold doesn't need an archmage to know any magic at all. Apart from that he was the head of multiple clubs during his school and college time which directly leads him to the philosophy that the MC of TES games needs to be able to do everything without any restrictions at all. The moment the people capable of straining him left TES games went down in quality.

They definitely knew. The entertainment industry has transitioned from trying to give the customer what they want. They now try to slip what they want past the customer.

I like most of MrMatty's videos, but there is no doubting he is a *massive* Bethesda simp, so I am not surprised that Todd chose him as an interviewer.
I'm an old guy part of the 1% of gamers over seventy -five I have tried many different games over the decades but I keep coming back to my favorite games Skyrim, Fallout 4, and Starfield. Bethesda may have its faults but as far as replayability their games are hard to beat. I have many thousands of hours worth of fun gaming from the many talented developers and modders who have added to my gaming experiences, to them I say thank you.
About the outside source which is Bethesda official website, the numbers of supposed sells are under "PLAYS". I wonder what kind of magical mechanism is hidden under the hood, I highly doubt it's a purchase for each "PLAYS".
It's really cool to see MrMattyPlays finally interview Todd Howard; I feel like I've watched him grow up in a weird way that comes with putting videos of yourself online.
While people were fixating on the $7 Starfield quest, what they including MrMattyPlays missed was that Fallout 76 went full pay to win with the Skyline Valley update. You can now swipe your credit card to rank 150 of the season pass and directly buy power in the form of perk coins. Todd Howard accidentally brought it up himself thinking that Matty was talking about it, but Matty was oblivious.
@@toolshedvideo This was always their plan? No. In 2018, Pete Hines got on stage and said that the only monetization that would come to Fallout 76 would be in the form of cosmetics in the Atomic Shop. That was before the game launched. There was no backlash. That's a false narrative. There is even a Pete Hines interview where he addresses being called a liar. He basically said it was never their plan to stray from charging for anything beyond cosmetics, but it didn't work so they had to.
It is also not increasing the value of a cosmetic. It is drastically inflating the cost of gameplay. If I paid for a AAA game, and they decide to offer me a new outfit for a few bucks, I can safely ignore it unless it's just so cool I must wear it. I can still play the entire game. If they offer me a quest for 7 dollars, I am missing out on gameplay, which is actually what I'm here for, unless I buy. It is very different.
About the 70:30 split - when Bethesda first introduced paid mods for Skyrim they did offer 70:30 or 60:40 something like that - and people boycotted it to shutting down. Then Bethesda did introduce the creation club with the whopping 100-0 split - yes, creation club didn't give creators ANY revenue split, they were one time payments for making the mod, then all profits went to Bethesda - for some reason community had much less issues with that than modders actually being paid fairly for their work
Note that the 'plays' count brought up at around 5:00 isn't the number of purchases, or downloads, it's the number of times that the game has been launched with the creation installed (it's particularly clear that it's not a download-count when you notice that on both xbox and pc it's higher than the 'views' count)
If Jason Scheier learned anything damning about Bethesda he would just sit on it and not publish it. After all he did it with the sexual harassment story on Activision Blizzard.
Jason Schreier can be trusted approximately as far as I can pitch a Buick. Well, maybe not that far. I will add that Todd, for all his faults, is working for a corporation which he serves as loyally as he is able. Schreier, on the other hand, is one of these pseudo journalist's to whom honesty is a foreign concept and whose agenda is always readily discernible.
Even before his Bloomberg days, Schreier had two angles for his articles: social justice, or corporate perspective. Both have their place, and can be tremendously powerful, but I think an interview with Todd wouldn't be terribly constructive. BGS is going well, and they've not had any social justice issues (at least that anyone has leaked).
Jason Schreier wouldn't do anything to hold Bethesda to account. He actually loves justifying bad microtransactions. Jason only cares if a studio is going against his pet causes, aka game dev unionization, employee layoffs, or the dreaded "crunch". Also Todd would never sit down with him, because Bethesda blacklisted him after he leaked the entire intro script to Fallout 4 in 2015. Ironically, Schreier also has written articles condemning people who leak info pre-launch. Guess it's only allowed when Schreier does it. Integrity is low with with him.

You maths is incorrect on this one. Those '944,477 PLAYS' are NOT downloads, their actually just the number of times somebody starts the game with the creation installed, so if download it and play Starfield 5x in one days it adds 5 to the total number of 'PLAYS' This means that these numbers are massively inflated and do not represent how many people have downloaded the creation (you'll also notice they have half as many page views). I reached out to Bethesda support who confirmed this, because it does seem like a uninformative figure to track. Unfortunately this means that theirs no possible way of publicly tracking how many people have brought/downloaded a Creation. But I've no doubt its made allot of money for people who want more content in the game.
Sadly, it sounds like horse armor again. People say that Bethesda charged too much for too little, and then bought it anyway. Is it any wonder they do this stuff when the customers reward it?

Allowing for mods to be installed on consoles, or making an in-game mod launcher to help people just install mods and play, is a big convenience. Todd Howard’s yacht insurance is charged monthly however
This is why i love the random timings of the universe coming together and releasing BG3 within months of Starfield.

Just download the free missions which are better.
just because people were willing to buy something now doesn't mean they liked what they got. Profit now doesn't mean profit later.

I would love to see Todd Howard sit for a interview with Jason Schreier .

Stop blaming Bethesda and Todd, blame yourselves and your wallet for letting they got away with these practices since Oblivion.
Of course, because it's not the grifter that's at fault for grifting! It's the mark. Sure bud.
You bought the horse armor didn't you? 😆
Blame goes to all.
Is the guy finally free from the delusions that his games are good?
By his speech with the lore regarding Fallout, it's clear he has no fucking ideas what his games are about.
Doubtful
Nope
Obviously not.
Sadly, it sounds like horse armor again. People say that Bethesda charged too much for too little, and then bought it anyway. Is it any wonder they do this stuff when the customers reward it?
Its the exact same as this 'cost of living crisis' in the UK
Everything went up in price, PEOPLE CONTINUED TO BUY IT, then shock horror the prices didn't go down.
We complain about the sparkly pony, PEOPLE STILL BUY IT, then we complain about sparkle pony 2
I have to agree the Geck and the Creation kit are both amazing development tools, i picked them up as a 13 year old playing morrowind.
They knew no one wanted $7 quests... they just thought they could get away with it.
I think it is a weird one. I'd rather have games complete at launch. So if further things are added I don't have a problem with some of it being free and some of it being paid. I don't really understand the expectation for free things to be added to games for years.
@@michaelh878 You're strawmanning the position.
What people want is to not be nickel & dimed or conned with the promise of a good & substantial game which falls off within a few hours. If you're adding 1 quest that was obviously cut to make the ship deadline... it should be free. Especially when the game is known for being low on content & the content being mostly bad. They should be scrambling to actually make the "good game" Bethesda convinced people they were buying.
They're verging on fraudsters trying to con you a second time before you've even forgotten the last time.
Add-on content should also be substantial enough to be worth people's attention. No one wants to make a transaction & direct their attention to Starfield again, slog through all the loading screens for a 40 minute quest in a game known for all the quests being bad... then shut the game off and transition to something else.
Better to just go straight to something else & not suffer the frustration of all the extraneous problems of Starfield & purchasing... even ignoring the actual monetary amount.
Todd... Todd never changes...
The gaming community never fails to disappoint with their inability to not spend money on garbage games.
I bought Eli's hab mod, mostly because of her work in the modding community overall. It's a good mod, but it was more important that she'd get a revenue split.
im old enough to remember the first time they made this mistake. they wont learn
No other engine can handle the sheer number of grilled cheese sandwiches the masses crave.
Bethesda keeps trying to monetize mods and it keeps not working.
Great reporting Michael, really enjoyed this.
So they are testing the waters for "pay to quest"....keep preordering and buying DLCs, guys!!!! You champs.
Mr Matty plays is a Bethesda bot and schill.
Maybe it's a good thing that we'll all be in our graves before elder scrolls 6 is released.
I hate the game industry so much.
Todd: We got it wrong.
Everyone: So, you'll change it? Do better next time? Learn from this?
Todd: No, not at all. We got wrong the fact that people were upset. This is exactly how we want to run our games. Give us your money, idiots.
What the hell kind of metric is "plays"?
At the present time, to access creation club in starfield, you most likely have to edit/delete game files to even get it to open.
I just can't wait for Bethesda to mess up TES6.
That will honestly be the saddest day of my life.
And that’s saying something since as a Marine veteran, I’ve had to cope with the deaths of brothers both in and out of combat.
don't worry, we will finally have a real TES game soon, Oncelost Games is made up of the people that _actually_ made The Elder Scrolls and they are making a new game called The Wayward Realms.
They already did, if their moronic DEI activists in positions of power in the company are any indication.
@@comyuse9103 While the community has fixed the previous Bethesda games, let's not pretend that it has also been a good thing to the game(s). Will we see the same community for Wayward Realms?
They probably knew at the start that it's wrong, yet they wanted to try the waters to see if anybody in the water bite back... and they did...
Bethesda depends on modders to make their games playable & charges for quests lmao. People actually buy games from this company still, embarrassing.
“That’s not what we want,” as if this didn’t go through x layers of internal review, feedback and iteration by every level of the corporation. It just magically happened, we have no idea how this bad thing ended up in our game!
It's not just monitizing the quest but the fact they pulled this BS while the base game is garbage. Terribe script, Poor voice acting,, graphics from 2015, over repeated dungeons and planet exploration that has no purpose. This should have been considered first. Woops! Forgot the space combat designed for 3-5 year olds.
I'm off to write a poop on Todd mod which you can buy for $10.
Being Starfield is a New IP As well as a new game. I really have no issues with the Creations page.
It is when they put paid mods into old game 10+ years after the fact I have issues. When they break everyone's Skyrim to re re re re lease it for the 1000 time just to put in a 5 dollar horse armor I get pissed. Not mad Pissed.
I lost faith in Todd after Fallout 4 launched. Basically throwing everything that made FNV great into the trash, and not even mentioning their name or game unless he had to. His reputation has just kept rolling downhill ever since.
From where you're kneeling, this must seem like an 18 karat run of bad luck.
So, the game is a disappointment, but it has millions of players.
Modders said it was awful, yet we got hundreds of paid mods that are selling and earning millions of dollars
Disappointment, yes. Bad? Probably not. We just expected more.
I think if Bethesda sold this game as something other than the greatest thing ever made in the history of humanity, we wouldn't have expected that.
It's looking less and less like I'm every going to bother playing it, tho.
@@speedingoffence nah, man. All they said was that it was Skyrim, but in space. And they did a long video of explaining the game, so I don't know what else people expected. Star Citizen 2?
@@jassykat Consider that Skyrim is in about 90% of people's top 3 games ever, and perhaps 10% of people's top game ever, I think it's realistic to say they set the bar pretty high.
@@speedingoffence Actually, they never said that, it was just me. 😬
@@jassykat no, Tod Howard did refer to it as 'Skyrim in Space.'
