- Hello and welcome to the channel. I recently finished a 1 month challenge to not switch my OS as I am a habitual Distro hopper. Since I finished that challenge I want to recommit to using Linux Mint for at least a month if not much longer once Mint 22 drops. I hope you all enjoy the video and find it helpful if you are considering switching to Linux as a Gamer in particular though no matter what you do in some way shape or form Mint will take care of you. If you want to help the channel grow be sure to click the nice shiny buttons below the video title and feel free to ask any questions on your Linux journey in the comments down below and I will help in anyway that I can!
Hey everyone I just wanted you to know the Linux Mint 22 gaming video is still coming! My kids just started back school and I have been playing New Vegas with what little free time I have but I have not forgotten about it, I was gonna ask you all to drop some titles you way want to see me test in replies to this comment and I will pick some for when I do the video, assuming of course I own the games you all pick! Hope to see you again soon and I hope you are all doing well :)
I have used Linux Mint for like a year and this is probably the best Beginner friendly distro to ever exist. It's light, stable and updated
I totally agree, I am super excited for Mint 22! Mint has everything someone could need in an OS with no BS. Ubuntu has a more up to date kernel at the moment but when 22 drops Mint will finally be caught up!
It's not really light compared to other distros
But very light compared to Windows, indeed.
@@VirtualizerExtreme I believe Mint is fairly light compared to some of the bigger bloated Distros of which there are many... of course if a new user chooses in the Distros that support it to install all the packages they may want instead of just the ones they need for basic functionality then it will bloat things up as well though still far less than Windows.
@@VirtualizerExtreme yeah I compared it to other Ubuntu based distro's and windows
I'm a long time Linux user and I'm impressed by how far we've gone, especially with gaming. Even though the mythical "year of desktop Linux" never came, the community has done an amazing job
I could not agree more, I have been using linux since I was 13 and have seen it go from almost totally incompatible to installable on every machine in my house. I am 25 now and I have spent so much time with Linux that life feels odd without it. Linux Mint 22 seems like it will be really cool and I am hoping that by the time the Nvidia Driver 560 comes out in Linux and we are being directed towards the open source driver than Wayland on most distros will be totally ready for the limelight on Nvidia GPUS.
Since Ubuntu 14.04 Linux has come along way in about 10 years. I use Linux mint xfce as my daily driver in my late 2012 Mac mini. I have an external ssd for my Mac OS 14.5 Sonoma. Arch is unstable I’ve crashed every distro I’ve tried. Debian is more stable but has issues almost every distro stable or testing branch. So I will never leave Linux mint!!
HI! I just wanted to let EVERYBODY know that Linux Mint 22 JUST DROPPED and I will be installing it tonite :) This means an updated, bigger and BETTER Gaming in Linux Mint video on a new Kernel and on a new release of the already amazing Linux Mint! I am so excited and will start working on the video as soon as possible, this video will include a variety of games covering different genres as well as different launchers AND showcasing some things that may not work as expected if not at all. I can't wait to see you all there and I hope you all have a very wonderful day!
3:31 I did not expect that to be said unironically😂
Lol listening back to it hit me in the face like another non busy hand swinging back at me.
I have been using linux on and off past two years. Just installed Linux mint 22 it has come such a long way. Have some fun and customize your desktop! Plenty of good extensions and themes. Congrats on your migration!
very nice video, it's always nice hearing other people's experiences in being able to play games well in linux, either because more devs are putting in the effort to provide binaries for linux or due to the increasingly better-quality compatibility tools such as proton
i used linux intermittently back in 2017-18 for raspberry pi stuff, and then in late 2023 i recieved an old computer that couldn't run windows if it's life depended on it, thought to try linux on it given my existing serviceable knowledge of it so i stuck debian on it and it ran well on the desktop, and to my surprise, even plays some simpler games rather well considering its dated specs by any standard
by early 2024, the EOL for win10 coming ever closer, with pretty much no reason to continue using win10, i thought to install it on a secondary drive on my main computer, and the results have been wonderful, i've even noticed some games that have given me issues on windows didn't give those same issues under linux, i can thoroughly say that i've got my back covered when MS stops supporting windows 10 now, after having seen the state of privacy on windows 11, i'm certainly glad
i'm keeping this video noted when i have to demonstrate linux being functional for gaming, and i'll keep an eye out for the upcoming linux mint 22 video you mentioned as i'm sure it'll be as informative as this one, i hope you're well :)
I am doing super well and a lot of that is to do with the fact that people have enjoyed this video, Your comment and story is wonderful and I thank you so much for sharing. I am going to do another Gaming in Linux Mint video very soon on the new release Mint 22 and I plan on testing not only more games but more launchers and scenarios. I hope to see you around again on a future video and feel free to share more stories, I love connecting to other Linux users!
Steam Proton got our back
It is amazing how much progress has been made in recent memory with Valves Wine forks, it is an amazing time we live in!
Valve's such a based company
@@RX69420XT Exactly, things would be totally different had they not put so much into gaming on Linux!
Thank you N0V, very cool!
Thank you as well :)
Just wanted to let you all know I will be making more Linux Gaming content very soon, thank you all so much for the 347 views it truly means the world to me. Just wanted to remind you all that if you ever have any questions I read every comment, I like to help in whatever way I can! Thank you all once again!
I installed a Linux distro a few days ago because I was sick and tired of Microsoft's shenanigans. I love using my Linux system because my user experience is no longer at the mercy of a psycho corporation. I plan to test how it handles gaming.
I could not have said it better myself, this is also why I hate Windows. Not to go off on a tangent but I am very passionate about this, functionality wise I like Windows 11 and if it was Open Source and made by a team with our best interests in mind then maybe things would be different. You could install literally any Linux distro from the ones maintained by companies with crap tons of support like Ubuntu or community maintained Distros that out of the box do not collect telemetry on you and even if they did there would always be a way to completely disable or remove it thanks to this great community. I hate being spied as much as the next person, I mean people give Ubuntu a lot of flack because they have Opt Out telemetry but honestly I would take having to click no one time over having to run scripts to sought out as much telemetry as possible in Windows 11. Another thing I love about Linux is that you install it and 9 out of ten times even on my Nvidia system I do not have to seek out drivers or download a crap ton of exes to install all of my apps, everything is centralized and beautifully functional... hey remember when you used to be able to move the Taskbar back in Windows 10 lol. That alone as a feature removed from Windows 11 is already a sign of the gross control Microsoft has over it's users. I do not want to come across like a Linux elitist or a know it all, if you like using Windows or NEED to use Windows I totally get it, I am in the same boat to some extent. I do believe despite all stated above that everybody has a right, a need even to understand what is really going on with Windows so that they can make an informed decision about what software they want to install on their machines :)
"I really love games that you can play with one hand!"
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Are you using Gamemode by chance? And deactivating the compositor (shift+alt+F12)? Those are pretty easy performance fixes.
I have never used game mode but I have turned off the compositor before, thank you very much for the recommendation!
You could run sekiro with just wine and it might work faster, at least this works for me. I am using wine-staging 9.8 and run sekiro thru lutris. my gpu is gtx 750ti and I do play it in 720p and a custom graphics config file just to keep fps 60 constant. The fire area you showed ran considerably better than on windows for my hardware so nice upgrade. Do keep in mind that it is different for hardware to hardware. Good luck :D
Linux gaming has been great for a few years by now, already.
Only thing holding it back atm is anticheat, and that isn't because linux isn't compatible, it absolutely is, but because the devs of said games simply haven't flicked the linux compatibility switch... It's the dev's fault, lol... All they have to do is flick a switch to ALLOW linux to work with the anticheat for the game in question, the groundwork is already done.
So yeah, linux gaming has been all the way there for a while now. :)
I'm swapping to Linux for my next OS, this win11 is gonna be my last windows machine, lol... Not sure when i will swap to linux, but i have a feeling i'll know, when the time arrives. I have a Linux Mint 22 USB ready to go anytime, lol.
Slime Rancher 1 and 2 work perfectly on Mint.
That is great to hear! Honestly there has not been a single game in my library that I play that has not working flawlessly in MINT! The age of Linux and Gaming is upon us...
I thought this video was how to play games on Linux Mint 22 that are located on an NTFS drive. Can you make a video on "how to"? I am just switching everything over to Linux Mint 22 rn and I have a large library on a 4tb ntfs drive that I am trying to get it to work and still have access from windows 10 when needed. TIA.
3:30 🤨😂
Lol, I have this habbit of rambling and saying silly things.
I just wish that multi-player games w/ EAC would work. I get as far as to the loading screens or enter worlds (VR types) and then it freezes.
Trust me I feel that pain to, unfortunately it is just a side effect of switching :( I will say however there is no shame in having a Windows drive accessible for those situations no matter how frustrating it may be to have to keep it around. Setting up Gpu Pass through is something a lot of people do to VM Windows with hardware acceleration however that still can cause some issues with anti cheat. I would recommend if you keep a secondary drive with Windows to at least try and mitigate some of the telemetry and limit its access to your online accounts. For instance if you download Windows 11 from Microsoft's website and I mean the ISO specifically and throw in on a Ventoy bootable drive then once you install the OS and make it to the setup portion there is an option if your not connected to Ethernet to "Continue without internet" or something like that. That feature is locked out of Media Creation Tool Created USB's as well as A lot of the PC's you may buy from the store, creating a local account is a great first step into lessening the clutches that Microsoft has around the user!
If I add a Linux channels section to my page, would you be okay with being listed there? 🔴 🐧
(Asking this to a few youtubers that openly use Linux)
Linux mint is great but for some reason a lot of the games would not detect my controllers wired or Bluetooth, pop os works fine. Also Sekiro looks cool but I'm not going to play any other souls game until I finish bloodborne lol.
Ah, I think I may know how to fix your problem. Did you install the Flatpak of Steam or the system package? As far as the Sekiro I for sure recommend it for after you finish Bloodborne!
@@n0viewers409 I have tried both versions of steam and other launchers and it also doesn't detect on emulators too. I'm not sure if i'm missing a driver or something?
@@Saturn-OS That is very peculiar, are you using an Xbox controller? I know in some Distros you have to install something specific for an Xbox controller but with Playstation and Switch controllers in my experience you just have to go into Steams big picture mode and go to the controller section and enable steam input for said controller, if that does not work let me know and I will help you troubleshoot further!
@@n0viewers409 I haven't use Linux mint in a while but thinking about it might have only been a problem with games on heroic launcher and emulators mainly with a Xbox and PlayStation controllers. Sorry about that.
@@Saturn-OS Oh your fine don't worry about it, I offer help to anyone who may need it when it comes to Linux on my videos. It is pretty cool that we live in a world where Linux is as good as it is with far less issues than before.
hey man, great video. You think Overwatch 2 and half life 1 runs fine on mint? ive been wanting to install mint for a few days (and im going to) but I was a bit hesitant cuz I love those games, some people told me they run fine but maybe I have to do some tweaks (for overwatch specially)
You know what, I am not 100 percent sure off the top of my head and I am about to have to run some errands but I will check it out on my personal rig for you when I get back and respond once again with a legitimate answer. I am sorry I can't do it right this second but I promise I will in just a little while!
HI! Sorry for the late response but I have a clear answer for you now. Half Life one should be as simple as clicking the install button to play as it has a native release that seems to have positive feedback on ProtonDB, if you have any issues you can simply click the properties button on the game in your steam library and go to the compatibility tab to force proton 9. As for Overwatch 2 you can seemingly play it just as easily with no tweaking other than forcing proton 9 in the games properties and compatibility tab :)
Man, you've been aiming at that corner (1:44) with excruciating intent - you can press Alt and Left/Right mouse button to move/resize a window.
It's like one of those things in my brain I cannot reprogram lol but I will keep that in mind :)
I recently had trouble running Cry of Fear, have you tried it out?
I for sure can! I will respond to your comment once I have tested it :)
Alrighty, so on Linux Mint 22 I was able to install and run the game with no issues using the latest stable release of Proton. This version of course is 9.0-2. I hope this helps and if you have any more questions just let me know!
@@n0viewers409 Oh thank you for such a quick response. I had uninstalled it, but i've put it on download again after your response. So i'll make sure to update you very soon!
I tried CoF on Pop_OS, and had problems. So I am still unsure if it'd work as well as you mentioned for Mint
@@n0viewers409 So after running it, there a couple of problems that I encountered.
1) The very first is that after running it for the first time it freezes my system. And if I select fullscreen mode, it messes up the my screen resolution even after quitting the game.
However, this problem is easily fixed, I just have to select windowed mode at first, and once I am in the game, I can switch to fullscreen mode.
2) In the gameplay, If I dual wield, my character gets 3 hands XD. The flash of my mobile doesn't work.
3) The papers you get, which contains the password and ID for the computer to login, they don't "glow" as they should.
These are just the first things I noticed before uninstalling it and then reinstalling it on windows, over there it works fine. (But it is just too much of hassle to play just one game on Windows). So, sadly, I don't play the game at all nowadays.
@@RAyLV17 To be totally honest Pop 22.04 at least for me has some issues, Mint 22 is actually pretty up to date now and Cinnamon the desktop environment is very well performing and smoother than most especially on my Nvidia Gpu. Let me know how it goes :) I may even make a video later today showcasing how to run the game with some gameplay. If you would like for me to test anything else assuming I have it in my library or it is free just let me know and I will check it out!
Does anyone know how to change the volume step increment on Mint 22? 5% is too large of a volume change.
I am not sure but I will look into it and get back to you :)
you can install the other sound volume applet (enhanced sound applet and replace the original one, it has more options and 1 of them is increase sound by 1, 2, etc
@@dj__grizzly hey mate thank you for the reply, but I ended up using Mate and then installed dconf editor to adjust the vale. Thanks again though!
does mint supports Dolby Atmos? HDR? thanks bro
As for Dolby Atmos I do not know for sure but from what I have read I do not think it is, and for HDR it is currently being developed and is getting better and better as time passes!
@@n0viewers409 needed to wait, Atmos and HDR are very important for my set up, I can’t wait no longer, fuxk windows once n for all
No it doesn't support atmos and no it doesn't support HDR. You'd need to use KDE and gamescope for experimental support. So you'd be better with a better distro. Mint is not the best distro for gaming OOTB.
i'm older and i know much about linux. i run win7 and many games don't work on it any more. is there a linux distro that looks and acts like win7 ? also can i use 'wine' to run excel or photoshop as well as games? thx.
Honestly Linux Mint in my opinion is the closest to the good ole days of Windows, Zorin also exists and it's selling point is that it looks like windows. There are tutorials online for how to install older versions of Photo Shop using Wine and I believe you could do that in whatever Linux Distro you choose :) Gaming in Linux is easier than ever, steam and other launchers use Wine and Proton out of the box so its usually as simple as setting the proton version in the games properties and clicking install. You can also use Lutris and it automates a lot of the process especially for older games. For instance recently Resident Evil came out on GOG and I install it through Lutris! If you have any more questions feel free to ask :)
If you want to skin Linux to look like Win 7, that's possible. I wouldn't recommend this per se, but a debian based distro called Q4OS has some interesting classic Windows looking themes available in a pack called XPQ4 (on sourceforge).
I haven't tried using Q4OS for gaming though.
Hey, mate. Ext4 or Btrfs on Mint?
Mint at the moment uses Ext4! As far as I know unless you manually set all partitions it will only install as Ext4 unless you select the specialized options and choose ZFS :)
@@n0viewers409 And you made a standard ext4 install?
@@e002840 So the way I installed the OS was a made a boot drive with Ventoy in WIndows 11. I downloaded the latest Linux Mint Cinnamon ISO the non Edge version and dragged it onto my newly created Ventoy drive (btw Ventoy install without Secure Boot support). I then restarted my PC of course with Secure Boot and Fast Boot disabled as well as Virtualization turned off, this is all just personal preference of course. I then booted into Linux mint and went through the standardized installer, once you get to the install section it will just have an option to clean install with no advanced options, this created 2 partitions one being for boot and the other being the ext4 partition which is the entire root partition where you OS and all of your data will go. After that I just did all of the expected things from making a username and password. Once the instillation was done I rebooted, now note and this may not be the case for you, but for me on my Nvidia 4060ti the pc will freeze when you restart after installing, all you have to do if this happens to you is just hard reset your pc. I always just hold the power button down which is not something I would recommend in most situations but at this rate the disk you installed to is no longer being written to and the OS is supposed to tell you to remove the install medium and reboot anyway. Sorry I hope this helped, like I said before you can select ZFS in the advanced options when installing or you can manually create partitions if you want more control over what type of partitions you are creating or for example want to separate your home and root partitions amongst other things :)
@@n0viewers409 Thank you so much for the info
@@e002840 Absolutely no problem, I wish you much joy on your Linux adventure!
no RTS on the list, that's a big nono
Oh don't you worry, I am saving that and much more for Part 2!
i bought the command & conquer/ red alert collection a while ago (13 games), now that i am on linux mint (cinnamon) i tested most of them with steam, they all work when 'proton 8.05" is selected (experimental gives wrong resolution on 4k tv).
Only thing i haven't figured out yet is how to use another ssd for the games, they install but don't work even when the drive was formatted in ext4 but if i move them to my (smaller) linux home drive they work just fine.
