  • Sparky was a bounce back to our local retired racing greyhound adoption group (GSNCR). We were lucky enough to be able welcome this beautiful 10-year-old brindle girl into our family on February 4, 2012.

    NOTE: We lost our lovely lady to cancer on November 25th, 2013. We miss her terribly, but we're glad we were able to share her lovely spirit with so many. Hopefully, seeing this video will encourage others to adopt one of these fabulous beasties :) To honour Spark and pass on all the wonderful things she taught us about greyhounds, we've since adopted two new houndies, Jasper and Ella! Check out my channel to see more videos with these two trouble-makers :)

    It is amazing how quickly a Greyhound will jump up on a futon, chair, sofa or bed. It is like they believe it is just for them. Miss Sparky has found a very loving and caring home. She will change your lives…for the better.

      @@CatbusCommuter ❤️😘🙏🏻.. 🌹. it's when she stands there when she has her jammies put on at the end... that really chokes me up... just reminds me of my lovely Bonnie before she died recently... it's the way they stand, so meek and mild.. it's very humbling how they trust us.. just the gentle way they hold their heads.. they are so gentle and sweet.. it has been more than an honour and privilege to have shared time with such incredibly beautiful beings 🐾❤️🐾🙏🏻 I will never stop loving them... just like you won't. God bless you both x

      Thanks! Spark was an incredible lady, I wish we'd had more time with her. 22 months wasn't nearly enough, but I'm so glad we opened our hearts to this beautiful senior lady. She came to us with the name Sparky and my husband and I both felt she needed a little more pizzazz to reflect her personality :)

    Beautiful dog! Greys are so lovely and gentle. I just felt heart tugs looking into her eyes. You can relate to the feelings she must have of loss, fear, uncertainty with new people and new places. Then comfort, food!, and love. They deserve this!

      So sorry to hear of your loss 😞 It’s the only time they’ll ever break your heart. Sadly, we lost our Spark in November of 2013 after only 22 months together. She was an incredible lady and taught us so much about being good hound parents.

    I was about to ask where you got the monkey sweater, but will check out the link below in your reply to Lydia. I am sorry to hear about Sparky's cancer - it is just the pits. My first hound died of cancer at 14; my second one is almost 13 and is being taken care of by someone else right now. I miss her terribly. Sparky looks like a good girl. Thank you for adopting a 10 year old.

      These groups do so much excellent work. I joined the board of the adoption group in my city to help with fundraising and adoption efforts. You did an awesome thing adopting a Grey, you'll get far more back than what you put in, they are awesome. Suggestion for future, limit the rooms they have access to in the beginning, going from a crate on the track to a big house can be overwhelming and stressful for them. As they become more comfortable then start expanding the areas of the house they can access. ;)

    • @CatbusCommuter
      @CatbusCommuter  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +fleuger99 Spark actually came directly from another home into our own. Her previous owners were divorcing, and after years of being part of the family, they didn't want her any more (ugh). She was already used to a home environment and was totally comfortable as soon as she walked in - she didn't like enclosed spaces, so crating wasn't something we considered for her, and she wanted to explore the house so we let her have a spin!
      Spark passed in November 2013 and we've since welcomed two more hounds into our home. One coming again from another home environment, and another from off the track but had time in foster and didn't have any interest in being crated or qualms about exploring her new home. It really depends on the hound to be honest - crating can be quite stressful for some, so we observe their body language and where they lie down to rest to see what kind of space they prefer. We've only had three hounds and none of them were interested in being crated. But, we've got a hound friend who absolutely loves his crate and the feeling of having a little, safe cave. We may end up with a "cave-dweller" in the future, but for now, our two have always loved having the run of the house :) The only restrictions we impose at the start is their interactions with the kitties.

    • @fleuger99
      @fleuger99 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Yasmin Nissim Ahh. okay. That is terrible, she would have been bonded with the owners. My two Greys are my family and I'd let my wife go before my two greys ;) (just kidding). The two Greys we have now are our third and fourth. We lost both our first two to cancer (osteo sarcoma and liver cancer) two years apart from one another.
      None of our Greys are crated, when we're at work they have run of the house and at night one sleeps on our bed and the other in a bog doughnut bed in our room. They are absolutely amazing dogs.I'm glad Spark got to live out her final years with you guys.

    • @CatbusCommuter
      @CatbusCommuter  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +fleuger99 Ha! Ours are well spoiled too :) I couldn't imagine losing two hound so close together, that must have been so hard...they are family! Spark had cancer as well, lymphoma. We got five extra amazing months with her doing chemo. Our boy Jasper came to us as a long-term foster about a month after she passed and we adopted our girl Ella a few months later. They're just such wonderful dogs and we thought adopting again would be a fitting tribute to our Sparky girl and all she taught us about greyhounds :D

    • @fleuger99
      @fleuger99 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Yasmin Nissim They are definitely family. Sorry to hear Spark also had cancer, it is a horrible disease. Our first Grey to get Cancer was Kasey. We did the amputation of the leg with Osteo Sarcoma followed by chemo. This bought her 14 amazingly awesome months. Then like most Greys post amputation, the cancer returned and it was to another leg. We just managed pain but she passed four months later. The our male Grey was diagnosed with liver cancer. He had 15 good months as it was under control with meds but then it spread to his hip and even on pain meds he began to whimper so it was time for us to let him go. He is the best dog I've ever had and I was devastated. Five months later we adopted a new male named Sammy. He is sweetest boy.
      This poem is great at explaining why we adopt again after a loss:
      Before humans die, they write their last will and testament, giving their home and all they have to those they leave behind. If, with my paws, I could do the same, this is what I’d ask…
      To a poor and lonely stray, I’d give my happy home;
      my bowl and cozy bed, soft pillow and all my toys;
      the lap, which I loved so much; the hand that stroked my fur; and the sweet voice that spoke my name.
      I’d will to the sad, scared, shelter dog the place I had in my human’s loving heart, of which there seemed no bounds.
      So, when I die, please do not say, “I will never have a pet again, for the loss and the pain is more than I can stand.”Instead, go find an unloved dog, one whose life has held no joy or hope, and give my place to him.This is the only thing I can give…The love I left behind. - Author Unknown

    • @CatbusCommuter
      @CatbusCommuter  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Congrats on deciding to adopt! Sparky ended up having a bit of a friendship with our white kitty boy, Rasputin. They were both comfortable around each other, and Raspy would occasionally rub against Spark. Our brown tabby girl Sai was never interested in her and vice versa. Unfortunately, Spark just passed away so there won't be any opportunity for her friendships to develop further.

      Sorry to hear about Sparky. I'm very excited to add our new family member. I am excited to get him or her home, but my wife wants to wait for winter to end. We are reading up on all the stuff to expect, and learning as much as we can before we meet the dogs.

      Rob Jersey I'm so excited for you! We got Spark during the winter, though if you adopt when it's warmer you can spend more time on walks and hanging out at the park as you get to know your new hound. I thought grayhounds shouldn't be around cats because of their prey drive. I hope your cat stayes safe & they live in harmony.

    • @CatbusCommuter
      @CatbusCommuter  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That’s a common misconception unfortunately. While there are some greyhounds with a high enough prey drive that cats and other small animals would not be wise fur siblings, it’s a very, very small percentage of greyhounds that fall into that category. We’ve had cats and hounds living safely and harmoniously together for going on seven years now.

    question about the stairs...did you use double stick tape on the carpeted stair treads?

    • @CatbusCommuter
      @CatbusCommuter  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      We did! Worked out wonderfully. We have two hounds now who continue to benefit from the extra tread. You can pick up the little carpets for a relatively cheap price from Home Depot. They've got a lot of different colours and styles.

    • @ex0atmospheric

      i had 2 greys years ago and had carpeted stairs...i'm getting another 2 at the end of the month and have ordered the carpeted stair treads with nonslip backing...i figured i needed to use the tape just to make sure they didn't move

    • @CatbusCommuter
