Mental Health: The police force taking it seriously

  • It's believed that as much 20% of demand on police is caused by mental health-related issues.
    The problem has long been misunderstood with people who are mentally ill, all-too-readily criminalised. But one of the UK's biggest forces, West Midlands Police, now has a specialist team to take sufferers into a place of care.
    Last year it put just 6 people, who'd been sectioned, into custody. Before, that, number was as high as a thousand.
    Dominic Reynolds has spent a shift with the Street Triage team to see how it works.
