Earth arc is just about right, length wise, for a movie. It's straight from the novel so 100% canon. Season 1 episode 1 was originally only in 4th novel, so in the books, it goes from a flashback from Cid's previous life straight into earth arc. The akane kidnapping in the anime in the last episode is not canon. In the books, the earth arc starts a bit slow. It would have made for a shit cliffhanger, so I think remaking the kidnapping scene was a good choice for the anime.
Wow that’s pretty neat they did that then. It made sense for them to do a non canon kidnapping to fit the narrative and I’m glad they put Akane back in season 1 cause it made that ending hit HARD!!
